Madden 10 rolls back the decades with the release of the "AFL Legacy Pack" DLC on September 24 for Xbox 360 and PS3. The DLC presents the game as if it were the 1960s, with referees in orange striped uniforms, "retro football card-like user interface" and a film grain broadcast camera look.
The eight original AFL teams will be presented with their original uniforms and the 15 AFL Legacy Game matchups in the regular season can be presented in Legacy mode during the offline Franchise mode, Play Now and Superstar modes. The pack costs 560 ($7) on Xbox 360 and $6.99 on PS3.
Shouldn't the equipment be retro too? I don't think they had visors and gloves and the current helmets and such in the 60s. Anyway, unless they jack in Howard Cossell, not worth it. (Yes, I know MNF didn't debut until 1970, but it's close enough, and how much better would this be if they did a real retro pack like that?)
This DLC is meant to line up with the NFL's "Legacy Games" for the 2009 season. It's not a throw back mode or anything like that. The NFL is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of these AFL teams with 16 special games this season, which will include old uniforms for the players and referees.
The players will continue to wear gloves and visors though. NBA players don't bust out the Chuck Taylor's whenever they slip on the retro jersey's and I wouldn't expect anything different out of NFL players.
That makes sense. I thought this was more of just a throwback uniform mode, but why would they have "a film grain broadcast camera look" as well? It's not like the actual games are going to be broadcast that way.
the used to have the classic teams in the maddens on genesis, used to be able to replay old cowboys v steelers games, why dont the new versions have them
So you don't watch any games with the Raiders, Jets, Chiefs, Titans (Oilers), Broncos, Chargers, Bills, or Patriots? Because it's not like one of those teams has won a Super Bowl. Unlike those long time quality NFL teams the Browns and Lions, who are just racking up those rings.
The Browns have won 8 Championships... None since the "Super Bowl" was invented but still... pick your teams to insult more carefully especially when trying to make a point about the history of american football.
@deezulYea its best to know your facts first before you start running that diarrhea mouth. And i'm really sad the browns aren't included in this set. They owned in the 60's!
@commencents Yeah, I'm sure Lions and Browns fans are mighty proud of that championship they won in 1960s. You hear them talk about them all the time.
"Browns rule! Patriots suck. You won only 3 Super Bowls. We're won 4 Championships. Yes, they haven't been since the 60s, but we still won them." Ravens DON'T count, since they didn't get to take any records with them, and Cleveland kept the Browns name.
"Yay, we are the Lions. When people played with leather helmets, we rocked. But now with the fancy plastics and the forward pass, it's so easy. We've had a perfect season, too. And we didn't lose the Super Bowl that year either like the Patriots did. What? It's not really a perfect season when you go 0-16?"
Browns last championship? 1964. Lions? 1957. Yeah. Those original 8 AFL teams since 1964? 10. Yeah, but the Browns and Lions are much better.
@Youthinized - Browns have always been NFL, so they wouldn't be included. Colts, Browns, Steelers moved to AFC after the merge.
Wow, its great how you're talking shit like a browns or lions fan hasn't heard or taken it before. Its one thing to stay with the flock and fap to Tom Brady when he hits the field and another thing when you grew up as that fan and stay there no matter win, lose or draw. There's steeler fans everywhere, your petty comments hold no water to what they've told me. So please, find a different tune to play :)
And who knows whats going to happen with Man-Genius at the helm. GO QUINN!!
I was hoping you'd be stupid enough to respond... I don't care who anyone roots for as far as teams go, the fact of the matter is that you responded to "Leon" for him saying he didnt care about the AFL and now you do a 180 and are now anti football history yourself?
Finally a piece of DLC from an EA game that's interesting. It's not something you'd normally get on the disc and it's not something way over priced. Not everyones cup of tea but still kinda cool.
This is cool. A good DLC. Does it have the correct rosters for that time? Also, are the stadium fixed so that they look like the way they did back then?
I knew someone would reply to my comment, and I knew they'd throw out the magical "New England Patriots". Remember that at the time the AFL was founded (1960- the league that ultimately merged with the NFL in 1970), they were the "red-headed stepchild" to the NFL. If not for the fact that the NFL took them in in 1967, none of these teams would be around today.
To make an analogy that a lot of gamers (who do not follow sports) can understand, the AFL was the Arena Football League, and the NFL was and is how we know it to be today. Therefore, I could care less about this expansion.
If you want to keep EA's pockets lined, then keep buying this garbage! They nickel and dime us to death, and they'll keep doing this as long as we consider to spend money on it.
Yep, just like all the damn DLC for Rock Band. Jeeze, just release a new game every year with an entire set of songs, instead of onezee twozee.
And have you done your AFL-NFL merger research? It was the NFL that approached the AFL to help control player salaries - with only one draft, and not two leagues competing, they could keep the prices lower. It was not the AFL begging the NFL to take them, like the ABA-NBA merger. If there really was a problem with the AFL before the merger, the NFL would have just choosen a few of the AFL teams instead of all of them.
We get it, you won't buy EA games or DLC. So no Rock Band either, right?
Every previous-generation system Madden (PS2 & Xbox) came with throwbacks built-in. Having eliminated classic teams, throwbacks, and a number of other features, they're now going to offer them as DLC? That is seriously weak.
Offer something that wasn't in my copy of Madden '04. I saw someone earlier in the thread mention historical equipment. That would be really cool, and it reminds me of what a lackluster PC title did in 1994. Why not re-create historical stadiums? Plenty of pictures of the Polo Grounds and Kezar Stadium exist; they should be as easy to render as the college stadiums in NCAA 10. Or, how about historically accurate positions and playbooks? I would love to be able to utilize a roster where Chuck Bednarik (sorry, Eagles #60) can be listed as both Center and Linebacker, or at least have the depth chart recognize this.
If Tiburon were to add these products into the game, or offer them as DLC, then I'd consider purchasing.
No, this is the only kind of DLC that EA should really be doing. That crap they tried to pawn off on us at launch is the "milking your customers". This stuff actually makes sense... though I'd say $7 is a little high, maybe $5 would be better.
Yes I know that the AFL stands for the American Football League. If you read my comment, I said "to make an analogy", meaning I was comparing the American Football League of 1960 to the Arena Football League of today.
To Deezul:
You're 100% correct about Rock Band DLC. We're all "sheeple", and will nickel and dime ourselves $1.99 or more at a time. However, to me, this AFL DLC should have been included (oh that's right- it is on the disc; 100k downloadable unlock) with the game. It's the very reason I no longer buy Madden Football every year (I bought Madden 2007 when I first bought my PS3 in November of 2007- I've played it once!).
Personally I think this is an awesome idea. Perfect DLC in my opinion. Something that adds to the game and might interest some people but isn't necessary. Some people here are delusional. How is this "milking customers" or "Lining EAs pocket"? It's optional, for people who may be interested in it. Hell $7 isn't exactly a lot.
Hopefully the throwbacks will be available online, like when you regularly get to pick your uni, regardless if another AFL team is playing.
Somebody do the math....to unlock everything in the game (assuming you buy the "Unlock all the extra stuff special package" deal DLC) is what? $100, 2 weeks after launch for unlock codes?
Bravo! For someone who thinks he knows football, these two comments alone prove otherwise. I'm a Green Bay Packers fan, so that's the main reason I "spewed" the comments I did about the AFL! The Browns along with the Packers, Giants, and Colts were the powerhouses of the NFL (the Lions in the 50's as well).
If you're going to defend the inferior league, at least make a point (yes the Jets did win Super Bowl III- congrats! LOL)! Otherwise, they were a joke, and we have the rings to show that! LOL!
This should have been in the game to begin with. This is total crap. I am so sick of EA trying to milk the crap out of their customers for every last cent. They've put the retro uniforms in the game before. There's no reason they couldn't just do it again.
I purchased the AFL Legacy Mode and I must be completely blind, cause I dont see anyway to get to the actual games....can anyone enlighten me?? PLEASE!! Thanks!
