Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick declared 9-9-09 as "Video Game Innovation Day" in the commonwealth. The inspiration was clearly due to today's release of The Beatles: Rock Band, developed by Cambridge-based Harmonix.
However, in his proclamation -- no, seriously, it was a highfalutin pro-cla-mation -- he said there were many reasons for bestowing the title upon this day. The state has a significant game development community, generating $3 billion in sales last year. Some of the first video games were developed in Massachusetts and many of the universities have (or are developing) curriculums to support the industry. Even Boston city mayor Thomas Menino -- who's had a shaky history with the industry -- is turning around. We hope you all celebrated the proclamation by playing video games.
The proclamation concludes by the governor "[urging] all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance." Guess we'll play some video games -- it's going to be a hard day's night.
