Sony Computer Entertainment America has some good news and some bad news to share. The good: Sales of PS3 hardware at its "top retailers" jumped 300% for the first week of September versus the week before the system's price was cut to $299 for the 120GB "slim" unit. The bad: Um, well ... okay, we lied. Everything's pretty good for a change at SCEA HQ, considering people are actually buying its console. (Although 300% pales in comparison to Europe's totally legit 999% increase ... or Japan's 7,350% increase).
The hardware maker also noted that, as of August, five of consumers' top 10 most-wanted games (as surveyed by OTX's GamePlan Insights) -- Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Assassin's Creed 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- are on PS3, in case you somehow didn't know this. We would like to note (mainly for Sony's information) that Modern Warfare 2 is also on Xbox 360, and that version was No. 2 in OTX's survey results, whereas the PS3 version placed 10th. (Assassin's Creed 2 for 360 is No. 3 and No. 8 for PS3.) In fact, if you calculate the "purchase intent index" for the top three (all Xbox 360 games) and the lower five (all PS3 games) they're nearly identical. But still, we'll give it to them.
Maybe it's more worthwhile, though, to point out that Uncharted 2 didn't even make the top 25. What's up with that?

I hadn't really heard anything about Uncharted until Joystiq recently started covering all the new Uncharted 2 footage. After watching some videos of the original I was blown away by the fact that I hadn't heard much hype about it.

i think uncharted is, but the main character is pretty bland in comparison to many other games. if the environments trump the character which is the case of uncharted then maybe it was poor character design.

Drake is a WAY better character than Gruff & Buff Space Marine With Scars. It's a little retarded that they used the exact same fucking character for Shadow Complex, but whatever.

Ratchet & Clank also didn't chart which is bad considering that is the only other major exclusive on PS3 coming out this holiday. It's odd that Sony would point to a survey like this that makes it appear that consumers are not interested in their two biggest exclusives this holiday.
The only PS3 games on that list that will be on shelves this holiday season are Guitar Hero 5, Modern Warfare 2, and Assassin's Creed 2. All of those are charting higher on 360 though.

Why is Uncharted 2 not on the list? It's definately the game I'm most excited for on the PS3.
Kinda pointless of Sony saying that multiplatform games are on their platform, especially if the 360 versions are higher up on the list.

The first game came at a time when PS3 adoption was low. Not that many people played it (compared to something like MW) so there aren't all that many people (outside of early PS3 adopters) that are waiting for the sequel.
These numbers have got to be eating at Sony. Multiplatform games that are more anticipated on the 360, at a rate that doesn't seem to be consistent with the number of PS3 owners worldwide. Maybe I need to study the numbers more, but it seems to me that people are choosing the 360 over the PS3 when given the choice of playing on either console. If that is the case, then I wonder what Sony can do to fix it (a new, FPS oriented controller would be a nice start)
I just hope people buy MAG. It's not going to matter that games can have 256 players at once if there aren't enough players to fill multiple servers.

The controller is a big deal. It's not even an FPS thing, really. Very few games use the d-pad as the primary method of control. Even simple platformers use the analog stick, so it should be up front and center, where your thumb is. The PS3 controller design is 15 years old. They just added the analog sticks a little bit after the psone came out, but that was when analog sticks weren't supported by every game so it was okay for them to be kind of tacked on. Sony is the only gaming company that hasn't tried to improve controller design with each generation. I personally find the playstation controller uncomfortable and outdated.
But aside from that, xbox live is just a much smoother experience than PSN. Just simple things like downloading a demo seem much more complicated on the PSN. Why do I have to install games after I download them? Even more importantly, since the 360 has had the edge in online since before the PS3 launched, everyone is used to playing online with the 360 and there are far more people to play with, or at least it would seem that way. I feel like sony would have to do a major overhaul to the PSN in order to compete.

Do yourself a favor and get the giotech triggers for the dualshock. It's a much better controller after you put them on, especially for FPS's.

I'll definately take a look at those triggers, thanks for the tip.
Am I really a fanboy for prefering my 360 over my PS3? I'm obviously not against the PS3 if I bought one. What's wrong with wanting Sony to improve their services?
I am, however, a steam fanboy. If a game is available on steam that's the platform I buy it on.

@soulblade - That's my reason. I also prefer the 360 controller, and I prefer to have vibration (I can't be the only one that didn't spend 50 additional dollars just for rumble)
It's not just that though. There is also the issue of the 360 having many more people with mics (since they were bundled, and yes, I know it's a double edged sword), people having a ton more achievement points than trophies, and an extra couple years of familiarity with the way Xbox Live works (it was on the original Xbox after all). Not to mention the perception that the 360 version of a multiplatform game is the superior version (even though that isn't true in every case)
Things will probably equal out by the end of this gen, and going into the next gen. People will get their heads out of their asses and pickup the BT mics needed for voice chat, and their friends will eventually get familiar with the PS3's online through exclusives like M.A.G.

Sony dragging its feet on trophies is why I play multiplats on Xbox. Say what you will about achievements, but for the most part I think they are one of the best additions to games this generation (not counting stupid grinding achievements like kill 53,000 zombies or whatever, those suck). I love having the extra challenges to extend my playtime with a good title. If Sony had gotten trophies out much sooner, I might've switched, but by the time they did, I already had a sizable gamerscore. Now that I'm about to break 35K, I don't think there's much chance of me switching. Once you fall into a habit...

Oh, and speaking of controls for FPS, when UT3 came out on the PS3 with modding available and more importantly usb MOUSE AND KEYBOARD SUPPORT I felt like the PS3 really had a chance to push into the FPS market. But as far as I can tell few if any other games have supported this feature. Especially with the new price point, it would make sense for a lot of PC FPS gamers to switch to the PS3 if all the games supported mouse and keyboard.

I dont own a xbox360, but
The controller, I will go with every one that says the 360 controller is great for fps. I have played some halo 3 and it works, I only played for a short while but yes it was better than the ps3. In terms of anything else I dont agree play some inFamous then come back to me about the ps3 controller not being good, completely disagree, when you dont notice the controller thats when you know its been designed well and I dont notice the controller with most games and when it comes to any beat em ups the ps3 is the better controller without doubt.
For fps' I use the split fish which completely sh!ts on either the 360/ps3 controller anyway (only on the ps3 haven't come across a better controller imho actually better than mouse/keyboard and thats saying something considering I have been playing fps since wolf 3d on the pc). Further more if you remember Sony did change the controller the boomerang controller if you remember but it was dropped because everyone liked the original controller. Also the six axis is a pretty big deal (flower for example) and the design has been tweaked.
Im surprised you can post on this thread if you find clicking install "complicated" (Sorry sarcasm, but it just points out how silly your comment is, you honestly had nothing else ? that should tell you just how great the system is, if your negative comment is this. By the way put a dynamic theme on your psn and compare and contrast sorry the NXE just looks cheap compared)
I would say the gold membership fee would probably mean that there is probably more people on psn (its free ) than on live ($50/£50 a year) - I know a few people with a 360 who have never bought gold membership, all the ps3 owners I know use psn. Any time of day I have walked into home its been busy, but then generally speaking the PS3 is a lot more popular here in Europe than in America.
I dont live in the US so cant comment about the difference in smoothness, all I know is that there is always ample notice for PSN upgrades and downtime and its never more than a few hours. I haven't had an issue with it and I have had the ps3 since launch in fact when it comes to smoothness PSN games generally run on dedicated servers (warhawk look at the server farm), resistance 2 64 player never any lag, killzone 2 never experienced lag, which would make the experience actually a lot smoother than live again I remember a lot of people complaining about issues with Gears of War 2 also more recently Battlefield 1943 on PSN, it may have been because less people bought battlefield on psn but hey that still proves that the experience was smoother by any account. They have had a couple of issues with firmware upgrades that cant be denied (1 of them bricked ps3s it nearly bricked mine I lost all of my game saves :( but its still running strong had to reformat it, actually just stuck a new 320 gig drive in it. 3.0 is apparently causing some issues, but I havent been affected )
There is so much that the 360 doesnt do that the ps3 does do, for example please take your external usb drive and connect it to your 360 what happens ? exactly
Do you have dynamic themes on the NXE by any chance ? Anything equivalent to Home ?
If you look at it from the other way around the xbox 360 has a lot to do to catch up to the PSN, It all depends how you look at it.

@CaramelZappa - Don't get me started on UT3. Easily the biggest blown game (in my opinion) of this generation. I rented the game at one point (for the PS3 I believe) and there was no one online playing. That may have changed since then, but it is far too late, and it really is a shame because I love the UT franchise
@Sc00by_y00 - As you've guessed, there are more people on the 360 here. A lot of people I know have a PS3, but almost none of them actively play any online titles (I couldn't get a single person to play Fat Princess, or BF 1943). When a multiplatform title comes out, the bulk of people play it on the 360 (COD4 is a good example), so there isn't much incentive for someone to go against the grain and get it on the PS3 (unless they don't have a 360). As for the 360 controller, I'd gladly take it any day over the FragFX. I don't play games at a table where I can put the mouse down (that may be more of an American thing) so it would be extremely uncomfortable to use, not to mention that the cable probably wouldn't reach from a lot of our TV's to our coffee tables (living room tables) anyway. The 360 controller is better suited to FPS's because it has triggers, and also because the sticks are offset (which is better in a way I can't describe, but that is very real).
I'm looking forward to getting my PS3 triggers. I hope that will make playing FPS games on the PS3 more pleasant.

Do you have coffee tables in the USA by any chance ? or maybe a small table to the side ? well what you do is drag the coffee table towards your couch and you put the mouse bit on the coffee table, and you hold the nunchuk in your hand which can be any how you like.
The cable is a good 2 - 3 meters long: 2 meters = 6.56167979 feet - 3 meters = 9.84251969 feet (its longer than 2 meters I just roughly measured it) I dont know how far away you sit from your tv but I doubt its that far away..
even then you can get usb extenders, but even better than that, they have at last released the wireless version http://www.splitfish.com/?uid=m1nokzp22q2goww8 both bits completely wireless I guess it uses bluetooth so you just need to drag a coffee table next to your couch for the mouse control. (I use a hi def projector so cabling ain't an issue for me anyway because the ps3 sits close to me and the projector is on the ceiling)
Its much more comfortable than trying to use a mouse/keyboard also take cod4 for example, do you know how many Americans are on the ps3 version ? Every time I play the damn game im lumped with a load of Americans, you may not know a lot of people with the ps3 but they are out there and a lot of them probably read this site as well.

Wow, got hated on for that. Just offering my honest opinion. I still stand by achievements/trophies as being one of the big innovations this gen (how many other truly new things have emerged?).
Also, good suggestion on those triggers. Somewhere I saw mention of GameStop in-store having them the cheapest, but I'm getting them either way. That will be the perfect thing to get me ready for Uncharted and MAG.

waaat? He's arguably the best new character this gen cause of his personality. Is it because of his normal looks? What would you like him to look like? Let's hire Squeenix and they can give him spiky hair and a giant scar on his face or something.

@SpyderTaco, you're just taking things out of context, the difference is kratos was a marketable figure, you place him on an ad and you know exactly he is. you place nathan on an ad and audiences will think gap ad. As for the online remark i'm trying to say you may be able to compensate for the protagonist though strong online play like cod4.
i'm not even trying to bash on uncharted2 the game looks absolutely fantastic but you have to think how the mainstream sees the game. Nathan has no real presence when you put him along side the mario, kratos, ryu hayabusas, and even master chiefs of the game industry.

Not surprised by the lack of interest in Uncharted 2. The first one didn't sell that good, and all the footage so far has only been seen by people like us. It's gonna take a while to sell decently. Also not surprised that multiplatform games are still owned by 360 despite the PS3 surge. I'm still buying all multiplatform games for 360

I buy most ps3 exclusives though, as much as I can being jobless right now. I mean I don't just buy them cause I feel sorry for the system, I have to like the games too.

Didn't sell that good? Over 2mm copies seems like a pretty good number for a console exclusive, especially given the install base of the PS3 at the time it launched.
