Konami regrettably informs us that the latest installment in the Silent Hill series, the Western-developed Silent Hill: Homecoming, won't be making its way to Japan following its North American release last year and European release earlier this year. Konami blames "assorted issues" for the lack of a Japanese release, yet says Japanese gamers can "look forward to future releases in the series." Just not this one. Ever.
That doesn't mean Japanese gamers are without hope, however. If you've got a PS3, you can pick up the US version of the game and play it on your Japanese PS3, since there's no region protection. If you've got a Japanese Xbox 360 though, you're out of luck. Also, you're weird.

Bah, I totally forgot about Silent Hill Homecoming. I finally found gainful employment again after being laid off this summer and rewarded myself with Dead Space and the GOTY edition of Oblivion. Now that I'm somewhat well into Dead Space I kinda wished I would've picked up something else, and being a devoted SH fan that might've done nicely.
I'm not totally in on all the Dead Space hype, maybe I just need more time with it :P

Worry no longer, Dead Space is a much better game than Silent Hill 5.

I was surprised at Homecoming, actually. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would (probably because my expectations were low).
That said, I thought Dead Space blew it out of the water.

Interesting turn of events, considering that Silent Hill was a Japanese franchise before Silent Hill. I'd be a little sore if I lived over there.

Are you seriously saddened that you won't be able to hear the amazing story of a Warriors title? This is how you play a Warriors title:
1) Find badguys.
2) Stab badguys.
The end.
Okay maybe some mission objectives may need translating, but seriously. The fun of the games comes from stabbing hundreds of dudes in the face, not from the plot.

I really enjoyed Homecoming. I liked all the little details they put into the game that connected it to other games in the series and the story was pretty decent too. The hotel area scared the piss out of me, too. Turning around to see a hallway full of nurses is just wrong.
Let's hope Homecoming isn't the final game to continue the canon. I'd really like to return to Silent Hill (or even Shepard's Glen) one more time.

The PS3 version is a very bad port i read, so I'm not taking any chances after my misadventures with other bad ports, like Splinter Cell Lag-Headache Double Agent.

The PS3 version of SHH got a higher rates than the 360, how is it possible that the PS3 version was very bad? Anyway, I prefer the older SH games than the new ones.
The bad news is "for me" Konami is insisting on developing SH games without the help of Team Silent.
Btw, if you like old SH games, you may like Siren, it`s a good horror game.

I can understand why. That game had to be serious red mark in Konami's books. VGChartz has it at around 400k between the two consoles, though it lacks data for the PC version, it can't have been the extra 600k more or less necessary for that game to break a profit
Konami probably just wants to forget it happened

Meh, I didn't get the vibe that the game was BAD just...
Difficult and unique.
It gave a spin on the exploration portion of the SH series I wasn't expecting. One way trips, points of no return, no place to continously gain health items...
It upped the ante on everything in the series.
Homecoming is by no means BAD. If anything, I would potentially put it ABOVE 0.
To me, it goes... SH4, SH2, SH3, SH5 and SH0. I never played one but I will redetermine my order this november.
SH0 is last because while I enjoyed it, it did absolutely nothing to break the norm of the series. SH4 is my favorite, because it's the one and only game that still manages to haunt me in my sleep on occasion. Elements from the game tend to be in nightmares I have frequently... That and FEAR.
That alone, means it must be the best out of all of them.

I am the Japanese blogger who sent an email to Konami.
In fact, the day when I sent an email is August 20.
Konami gave an answer to me on the next day.
I was at a loss for two weeks whether I showed the contents with my blog.
I finally decided to show it with blog.
The few days later, that this game became the release cancellation was announced.
I examined it about this matter originally afterwards.
Perhaps release cancellation seems to have been decided in April of this year.
The details are going to show it with my blog for the future.
Because I become the description in the Japanese, please wait for what is translated into English who it is.
Thank you.

I agree with Rein - it's not anywhere near as good as the first 3 games, but is better than Origins, and SH4.
I wouldn't recommend the game to someone who isn't a Silent Hill fan, but it's definitely worth renting out if you are.
F Tank - Silent Hill 4 was developed by Team Silent; this is, without a doubt, the WORST Silent Hill game in the series.
Also, US copies are region locked, because they don't work on UK consoles - I thought about importing when I found out Europe had to wait an extra 4-5 months for the game.
Also, please Konami, please make another Silent Hill game!

As you said: "If you've got a Japanese Xbox 360 though, you're out of luck."
Then I said: Not really. Because there is asian version of this game. So you're still NOT out of luck.

I liked how in homecoming the people you meet aren't completely oblivious to whats going on in the town. The battle system feels better in this game and so were the boss battles. They weren't just keep distance, fire gun at thing, it was more dynamic, you couldn't just stand in one place or move back and forth and attack and repeat. Get on up on the floor, cause we gonna boogey oogie oogie till you just can't boogey no more. Theres no time to waste lets get this show on the road, listen to the music and let your body go. The sooner we begin the longer we've got to groove, listen to the music and let your body move.
You might say that Silent hill isn't about the battles, that's true, its all about the story, but if they're going to fill the game to the brim with annoying (let me say that again, annoying, not scary, because after seeing the same things pop up over and over again, you seriously shouldn't be scared anymore) monsters, at least make the fighting not so bland. I started running past monsters in SH 2 early on in the game cause its not worth the time and health.
I also liked that the people here help you a little like the police officer or the main character's galpal.
Oh and also the nightmare world looks better in this game, then again this is the first time SH has been on a HD console.

Best or worst is open to interpretation, because I thought Homecoming and SH3 were the worst and SH4 was right in the middle, imo. I loved it but would have loved it more had it been it's own game like it was supposed to have been and not had the "Silent Hill" name slapped on.
For the record, not playing on PAL consoles does count it as region-locked because there are many other regions outside UK. I've had a Japanese 360 in the US so I made it my business to know what worked and what didn't in my situation
