French prisoner snakes past guards in cardboard box
The first time someone snuck out of a real-life prison by stuffing themselves inside a cardboard box, we found it amusing. The second time, though, we have to wonder how this keeps happening. According to the Telegraph, French inmate Jean-Pierre Treiber constructed a cardboard box in the prisoner's workshop at the Auxerre, Burgundy "high-security" prison at which he was awaiting trial. When no one was around last Tuesday morning, Treiber himself hopped in the box and awaited loading with "dozens" of other boxes, only hopping out of his concealment well after the truck had left the prison.
In 2004, Treiber was accused of murdering French actor Roland Giraud's daughter, Geraldine, as well as her friend Katia Lherbier. Giraud calls the escape an "avowal" of Treiber's guilt, while Treiber's lawyer says it may be an indication of his client's absence of faith in the justice system. Either way, one thing's for sure: We either need fewer cardboard boxes in European prisons or more prison guards with suspiciously narrow vision cones.

I wonder if Kojima feels responsible that a murderer is back out on the streets, using methods that his own character used...
The Baron @ Sep 11th 2009 8:05AM
Probably not. Hiding in boxes has probably been around since before.. well, not before boxes.

Better than using a rock pick, that would have taken years and he would have to deal with Morgan Freeman as a prison smuggler.
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Sep 11th 2009 2:55AM
Are you implying that Morgan Freeman is anything short of amazing?
sonicspike41 @ Sep 11th 2009 3:04AM
I think Morgan Freeman wouldn't be too good with prison escape. He'd start narrating the whole thing, and I'd just get lost in his voice and end up getting caught.
Tyger @ Sep 11th 2009 3:16AM
Apparently nobody's seen Shawshank Redemption.
"Why do they call you Red?", "Probably because I'm Irish."
DJMayhem @ Sep 11th 2009 3:44AM
Great, now all I can think of is Andy Dufresne talking to Red over codec.
"Andy, use the Triangle button to dig!"
(nice reference, btw)

Also, France has prisons?!
Jrinswand @ Sep 11th 2009 9:56AM
Why wouldn't France have prisons?
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Sep 11th 2009 1:45PM
They're usually to cowardly to commit crime. Look at G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra and how all those French people panzied out as soon as the Eiffel Tower started to melt. Shameful.
Cloud_ST @ Sep 11th 2009 4:00AM
Just wait till they start selling the Tank boxes.

I'm just trying to figure out how you "construct" a cardboard box that blends in with, oh, say, anything?
rawrawrawr @ Sep 11th 2009 5:07AM
I do like the idea of a prisoner's workshop in which people get to construct, of all things, cardboard boxes.
Derick @ Sep 11th 2009 12:53PM
I wondered this as well. It sounds like he constructed a cardboard box that was able to hold his weight too. That's a sturdy goddam cardboard box.
Jester Bee @ Sep 11th 2009 5:55PM
If it weren't for the fact that he's a wanted criminal I'd say get this man a job at a cardboard box company! My computer box ripped my first day but this guy made one that supported himself!
danthaman15 @ Sep 15th 2009 8:17AM
