Man, not to sound uncaring, but who cares....Hendrix has been in these games, Cobain fan's should be flatter that he is being immortilze in a game it's a honor to be forever remembered at his prime, I'd see if they had him dancing with N'sync or something.

God its pretty funny, if she signed the contract which she did its her own fault for not reading or talking to Activision people more about this on the front side. As for the others griping its all pretty funny and hyporcritcal they get paid for their work since Nirvana and still get royalties from Nirvana IP. Sell out is still a sell out $$ for labor, $$ for performance, if you want to do charity join a religion. If you want food on your table and roof over your head then you work in what ever field you choose and can make a living at. Typical lack of reality for these people I am tired of the "we know what he would of wanted" after someone died. Who is to say that if he had not blown his head off that after his fame had passed he would not of done the same thing? Especially if he was broke and his daughter needed food and life other than a cardboard box. Snivlers then, snivlers now! Fucking grow up and get a fucking clue! You think Henry Rollins does his gigs for free? Nope but he has made a career in being socially active and staying true to his cause maybe Cobain should of thought of that before he selfleshly took his own life. We all sellout to some degree unless we have fuck you amounts of money usually from someone else in the family selling out since it isnt something that sprouts out of your ass. Or you can live on the street with no money no job. I used to see those guys and gals too when I lived in San Francisco burned out over drugged hippies all through the panhandle and Haight. The younger ones tended to hang in SOMA & UN plaza. In the end they stayed true to their cause refused to face reality and well since they didnt have talent to be musicians, skate stars or artists they ended up homeless beggin for change.

Here's the way I see it. If everyone who was close to Cobain says that this is disrespectful, that's just tough. Kurt, and by extension all of his friends, forfeited his right to object to this kind of thing the moment he pulled the trigger. He got famous for doing what he loved to do but didn't like his popularity. He could have still done what he loved to do, not record it, disappear into the world, but he took the easy way out. So he doesn't get a vote. Now his avatar can sing Jonas Brothers crap for all I care. The "leader of a generation" bailed on us. If his avatar is seen singing backup to Miley Cyrus it's his own fault.

And herein lies the dangers of that stupid Beatles game. You'll notice none of this started until after the beatles was out. A: I don't agree with the beatles decision. The songs are not sacred and should be exportable. Period. B: Nirvana is not the fucking beatles, although they certainly are and were confused on that subject. C: Nirvana was barely even one of the best 5 grunge bands. D: No one seems to be complaining about Johnny Cash...

>money grubbing ex-wife who is living off his fame and money for the past 15 years decided she needed some cash.

She's entitled to it, just as your wife and children would be entitled to your money if you shot yourself. No, Cobain would certainly not have approved of this, and he could have made a unilateral decision about it had he not commited suicide. He opted out, so the decision devolves upon HIS HEIRS, not his fans or former bandmates.

Considering Activision whored out Cobain to perform others' songs, we'll probably see him elsewhere in the Activition Library:

Cobain of Duty: World at War
007: Cobain of Solace
Transformers: Revenge of the Kurt

etc.

I don't understand what's wrong with Cobain being in the game. Hendrix and Cash were in guitar hero games but there's no problem with that of course. People need to stop acting like it's a big deal. It's like complaining about a dead NFL star being in a Madden game

Nirvana is entirely overrated.

There music was pretty terrible, but being able to play as Cash or Cobain just isn't right.

This blog has made me hate the words 'shotgun' and 'sell-out'.

Seriously, though. It's the internet for Christ's sake. Google some jokes and pick the one you see the least. At least be original with your unoriginality.

Digital puppets of dead rock stars is one of the most distasteful aspects of where GH has gone. I'm not really thrilled with the appearances by living artists either, but at least they're in there because the artists themselves agreed to it. Hendrix, Cobain and Cash had no say in appearing in the game. Cobain in particular, who was pretty clear on where he stood on gross exploitation by the music industry, is unsettling. Seeing his digital puppet animated to belt out Bon Jovi tunes is so antithetical to what he stood for.

I didn't know the guy, but that's my gut reaction to this stuff. If Grohl and Novoselic are disgusted as well, then my instincts aren't far off. I think their request makes total sense.

The reason people want him locked back up is because he would have been against being put into the game and being the lead man on some of those pop songs. He would have disagreed with playing 90% of the tracks on GH5.

I watched the video that was up on Joystiq and it had Kurt dancing like he was at a night club to some songs and it just doesn't seem right.

Guitar has had obvious Jimi Hendrix avatar ripoffs before, and nobody said anything. Why does Cobain get all this drama? It's not like you're able to commit shotgun suicide in the game. Or you're even playing a Kurd Cobain GAME. He's an avatar in a game where you barely pay attention to the avatars. I was a Nirvana fan back in the day (Before I realized how over rated they were), and I'm the furthest from offended that you can "play" him in a game. Again, Hendrix passed away, and he's a character in GH4. Barker was in a horrible plane accident that almost ended both hislife and career, but he's playable as well. Quit whining over retarded things.

The fuss is about using him for songs not his.
That makes complete sense from a legal and moral stand point. None of you guys know for a fact what Courtney Love signed. If Krist and Dave are in line with Coutney, that's pretty much a flying pig right there - I cannot believe for a split second Activision has license to use Kurt outside Nirvana. It's like The Beatles wouldn't ever allow any of their characters to be played on different songs. Ever.

If some kid did this, ok. You can just delete his video. If a company legally selling copies with a license of likeness, and then broke it? It's wrong.
Keep him under Nirvana, and not under some Flava-flave.
It's fucking wrong.

It's Activision. They're not listening. Average Joe Customer wants to play as Kurt Cobain while playing Dragonforce (or whatever the GH series has now), so it will make more money.

Should this have happened in an MTV Games game, I believe they'd be more likely to listen to concerns of such prominent people.

Call me a fanboy, but if you look at the history, Harmonix, MTV, and EA have tried to make things a lot more user-friendly with Rock Band than Neversoft and Activision have with Guitar Hero. People may say there's a bias in the gaming community toward Harmonix, but there's a reason.

I always thought that the 'avatars' were the worst part of the guitar hero games. They always look like total crap. They don't even care enough to give them guitar straps with results in the guitars just floating there all creepy-like. The avatars also fall head first into the uncanny valley with the one-size-fits-all motion capture data.

So I actually applaud the intent to maybe improve on this area...except it's not improved. They just stuffed the image of some beloved artists into the awful avatar contraption and made them dance around...terrible. This is just a money grab and one that is treated with an alarming lack of respect.

No way I'm buying this.

@ Chris

And you know so much about the guy? Is that what you're telling me? I like how you rationalize his drug use because of his depression. Yeah, that's okay. You're completely right. The guy was awesome. A legend. A fucking saint.

Wait, no. He was a fucking burnout. He was selfish. He is/was nothing more to me than some guy who played the guitar, wrote a few songs and shot himself. I find it hard to respect people who "have it all" yet they complain about shit that only, ONLY, affects themselves and no one around them.

I agree with what they're saying. Cobain should function in the game like Hendrix functioned in World Tour, and only play his songs. Watching him jam to No Doubt is distressing to somebody who was a big fan of his.

Because in the Beatles game. You are only playing beatles songs.

It's not john lennon rapping or singing Bon Jovi. The likenesses were done tastefully as opposed to the playable ones in GH 5.

“Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero® 5.”

:( bitch signed what she had to sign, she got her money, now that there is a public outcry she tries to take it back.

... and? It's just another character skin. It's basically the same as Lars Umlaut playing Steve Wonder. No one forces you to. If you deceide to play "Bring The Noise" with Cobain, it's YOU defiling him, not Activision. It's the same as playing Roger or Alex in Tekken. I mean, beating up Kangaroos? CALL PETA, QUICK!

This story gets filed under "stuff that gets artificially blown out of proportion".

JXC, Cobain didn't invent the genre. He was strongly influenced by the bands that preceded Nirvana, e.g., the Pixies and Mudhoney. Nirvana simply introduced it to the masses. I hate when people inaccurately credit Cobain with inventing the sound.

When Cobain checked out Nirvana was already being outsold by Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and the Smashing Pumpkins among others. They were becoming a footnote in history. By taking the easy way out he ensured his and the band's legacy. He never survived to make records that didn't sell and play tiny, half-empty venues.
