Borderlands trailer introduces us to gun-toting 'fools'
91
Sure, the dreary environments in Gearbox's upcoming FPSRPG Borderlands may lack any sort of natural beauty -- but at least its inhabitants are charming as all get out. The latest trailer for the title introduces us to the four playable classes in the game: Mordecai the Hunter, Lilith the Siren, Roland the Soldier and Brick the ... Brick. We also witness a man with extremely pointy, spike-like nipples, forcing us to believe that the titular Borderlands are not only unwelcomingly ugly, but also cold as a well-digger's behind in January.

This is why intelligent discussion can't happen on here very often. All he did was say he didn't really like the trailer, no need to jump on him for that.

Y'know, I like The Dark Wayne. I think he's a pretty funny guy, and he comes off pretty well as Batman. That said, I'm getting sick of all you clowns who think you're someone famous. I doubt Hideo Kojima would say that. He's never really struck me as an arrogant cockbag. Rather, he's more of an insane cockbag.
So please, stop trying to impress us by the fact that you think you're Hideo Kojima. And to all you wannabe Dark Waynes, just stop. You're embarrassing yourselves.

Really? I thought Hideo's comment was pretty funny.
I laughed, and I gave him a +1 for it.
Guess not everyone feels the same as you Quiggy.

I still am not sold on the graphics. Not saying they aren't bad or anything, but I am interested. I will need a demo to clinch this game for me, or a lot of gameplay video from the player perspective.
Obviously is similar to Fallout, and perhaps improves on that.

Maybe it's like Fallout but more fun and less walking for-fucking-ever to find Underworld.

I completely agree with you on all counts.
I was thinking "wow okay, Fallout" for the first few seconds of the trailer but this looks like it might be able to pull away from the label of a clone- I hope. It has a more comical feel to it, and I suppose that's what they were going for what with the cartoon-like cell shading.

It really made me think of Fallout when it said "wasteland".

haha, yes true. But Fallout didn't invent the idea of a wasteland... I hope people know that.

Am I the only person who refuses to watch more trailers for games I'm excited to get, in fear of ruining the experience?
Games like Borderlands, where I don't want to preview everything before I play it.

Yeah, I saw one too many Mass Effect Trailers that kind of messed the story up for me. So I'm kind of depressed because I really enjoyed Mass Effect.

Exactly what I was thinking at first. The whole western theme with some modern weapons kinda reminds me of Trigun.
If they let you play as Vash or Wolfwood and threw in a few of the Gung-Ho Guns as bosses... oh the fun that could be had.

I don't get it, there was such a big hubbub about that show, but from what I saw:
Trigun = 20% Good action, 80% Vash crying.
Did I miss something?

Personally I liked it for Vash's comedic acting during some of the lesser battles and scenes, and for the moral dilemmas.
He refuses to kill anyone, choosing instead to just wound them to prevent any serious harm. At the same time he also feels the need to save everyone, something that he is later painfully reminded he can't always do.
It's just a funny and often times emotional and serious ride on his way to finding his brother.

You're either getting Trigun confused with Spider-man 3 or you just saw the last few episodes of the series. I hope they get all the original english voice actors back for the Trigun movie. I talked to Johnny Yong Bosch last weekend and he said he was up for reprising the role of Vash.

I'm really excited about this game, but I got a feeling it will sell badly. At least I haven't seen much info on it in more mainstream media.
Anyhow; Borderlands, Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls will be my first priority for the rest of 2009.

I'm inclined to say the same thing, but...
HAVE YOU SEEN THE BOX ART? If that doesn't sell a few extra copies to people walking by, then I'm entirely convinced that games like Halo and Call of Duty have destroyed mainstream gaming's taste in creative new IPs.

Love the artwork. However I'm unsure if that will sell it as well. I don't know if you remember the original Ico cover and the dreadful US version cover of that. There must have been some reason why they changed it into that super-cheesy 80s fantasy movie cover to begin with. But I hope Borderlands sells well, so we will be seeing more new ip's in the next years.

I was talking to a manager at my local GameCrazy and he said he went to a managers conference and that there is a lot of hype being put out about it. I remember the same thing happened to Fallout with mainstream media not getting a hold of the hype until a month or 3 weeks before launch.

Demons Souls is a really great game but be warned because it is hard as hell. A friend of mine imported the game and it was completely in english. He also imported white knight chronicles and that is probably a better [albeit different type of] game. But, I'll be picking up both of them thats for sure. As for Borderlands, I wasn't all that hyped about it until the last few trailers (the Bale one & this one) and realized the game doesn't take itself too seriously like Fallout 3.
My must haves for this year are Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassins Creed 2. However, Demon Souls, Borderlands & Brutal Legend are all on the verge of being day 1 purchases as well.

Well, in the case of Fallout 3 it already had a sizeable and devoted fanbase to begin with. It seems like new ip's usually struggle without a large marketing push behind them.
Just look at Dead Space, one of the best games this generation imo, and still it sold less (though not badly) than it was expected to. The first Assasin's Creed sold really well, but i remember hearing a lot about that in mainstream media. It was all over the place. And of course they had Jade Raymond as well. :)
GT5 would be on my list too if it was certain it would be out this year...

Just preordered this today, but I was forced to choose between this or Brutal Legend (not fun deciding that one). That cartoony art style I hated at first is beginning to not bother me anymore, even if I sometimes wonder how good it could have looked with the old one.

I quite like that artstyle. Or, it was nice in the 2 games I ever saw it in: XIII and Valkyria Chronicles.
And I'm getting a bit tired of the "waxy" look in most newer games.

A hard decision between this and Brutal Legend? This looks so much better than Brutal Legend, like most of the big games being released over the next few months.

Well I'm not really a big fan of Tim Schafer, but it intrigued me a lot. I'll probably just end up renting it down the road.
