Art from GRIN's canceled projects revealed
We knew that GRIN was working on a project in conjunction with Square-Enix titled Fortress at the time of its closure -- however, the portfolio of Bionic Commando lead character designer Björn Albihn offers a look at a few more of the studio's games which might have been. In addition to concepts from Fortress, the art collection includes a look at a spaghetti-western shooter called The Cult, a PSP game called Switch and a number of character models from an untitled project.
All the models look amazing -- particularly the designs for The Cult. Though the smiling developer has closed its doors, we certainly hope these projects will see the light of day in some form or another.

Ack, Marlboro! Quick get out of there before Bad Breath gives you every known status ailment.
sonicspike41 @ Sep 13th 2009 4:38PM
Too late, he's been petrified.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Sep 13th 2009 4:43PM
he's also blinded and confused, swinging his weapon at friend and foe alike, not dissimilar to the poison AC2
SpaceFox @ Sep 13th 2009 5:31PM
Ugh, I beat FFX last month. Maxed stats and everything, the Marlboro is one of the worst enemies to run into. The picture reminded me of it too right away.
sonicspike41 @ Sep 13th 2009 6:08PM
FFX is fun to get max stats on. I remember by the time I got to the final fight with Seymour Kimahri killed him in 2 hits.
Also, their unannounced project was supposed to be a Final Fantasy game or spin-off, so it makes sense that the iconic Marlboro would make an appearance.
Perhaps next someone will uncover images of a Coeurl or a Cactuar.
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 9:15PM
Cool spoilers, assjack.
Jinsenken @ Sep 13th 2009 9:37PM
FFX is almost a decade old already. There's nothing left to spoil.
sonicspike41 @ Sep 13th 2009 9:50PM
Would it have been better if I said KO'd him? It's what I was thinking, but killed just seemed more fitting considering the way most battles go. Most monsters and/or bosses "die" after you win against them in victory.
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 10:32PM
Kids these days.
Levi @ Sep 13th 2009 11:39PM
I thought they were Malboros? Not a cigarette
QUICK!! NEWPORT 100'S!! L1+R1!!!
LegendaryRedass @ Sep 14th 2009 8:23AM
Sorry guys, it's malboro, not marlboro. I've slayed thousands of those things. They're in just about every final fantasy game, and they usually have a lot exp. I used to call them marlboros too.
carmaction @ Sep 14th 2009 10:10AM
It depends on which game you're playing, actually. You aren't wrong, but you're certainly a jerk for telling us that we are.
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 4:33PM
Kind of reminds me of the Marlboro from Final Fantasy.
Except value-sized.
freaparn @ Sep 13th 2009 4:37PM
I'm seeing more of a "Little Shop of Horrors: The Game" vibe, but that's me.
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 4:33PM
You fast-typing son of a bitch.
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 4:34PM
Fudge. Now I'm a shitty clicking son of a bitch.
AvA (ice~) @ Sep 13th 2009 4:41PM
WHAT?! I've been out of the loop when in gods name did GRIN close down???!!
Phillip @ Sep 13th 2009 5:14PM
Click on the "GRIN" tag link in the article, three articles down:
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/bionic-commando-developer-grin-closes/
That was a sad day.
Also, since you've been out of the loop: the above link links to an article from earlier that same afternoon where they talk about ex-GRIN staffers forming "Outbreak Studios":
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/ex-grin-staffers-form-outbreak-studios/
Now you know as much as I do. :D (
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 13th 2009 5:15PM
A while ago. Did you know that Mars was also colonized. I got a new dog- he's a space monkey.
Phillip @ Sep 13th 2009 5:16PM
Darn html detection. The last line was supposed to read:
Now you know as much as I do. :D (<- pun intended)
Phil @ Sep 13th 2009 4:46PM
Damn there are some talented people out there!
MystileArmor @ Sep 13th 2009 5:35PM
..and then they pissed it all away by making a shite Bionic Commando.
AvA (ice~) @ Sep 13th 2009 9:57PM
what's with all the phills on here!!!!!!! I'm phill, we got you phill, and phillip commenting above me. odd, so odd.
bm @ Sep 13th 2009 5:44PM
Wow, stuff like this gets canceled, yet the next fucking burly sweaty man simulator with the same old shitty brown environments gets to be released a hundred times over. Thanks a lot, hardcore gamers.
MystileArmor @ Sep 13th 2009 5:48PM
Dude, you are staring at a fucking still.... for all you know it wasn't even part of a game.
I bet you were one of the people that already bitched about Transformers, when the only thing released was a teaser trailer with the logo in it.
freaparn @ Sep 13th 2009 6:01PM
You're kind of arguing his point for him with that Transformers' reference, to be fair.
MystileArmor @ Sep 13th 2009 6:08PM
I suppose you have a point, although I still think you can't judge a game by a couple of still images.
freaparn @ Sep 13th 2009 8:41PM
No argument there.
DTNeotericDope @ Sep 13th 2009 7:08PM
I agree you can't judge a game by it's single screen shots. Terminator Salvation had some cool screen shots. Bionic Commando?? Need I say more. GRIN closed down because they had a lackluster track record in the sales department. It's all business. If you don't have the capital to keep your company running it falls.
Lurkero @ Sep 13th 2009 7:12PM
Art can look as cool as it wants. It's when you pick up the controller and attempt to play the game that anything matters. And after Grin's 3 strikes, they were out.
DBuck_Eye @ Sep 13th 2009 7:49PM
Reminds me of Dragonball Z.

Jacksons @ Sep 13th 2009 8:26PM
Sometimes I wish I knew dragonball references. Sometimes.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 13th 2009 8:00PM
I was playing the Lost Planet 2 trial/demo today and I instantly got a de ja vu when I saw the picture.
CrabBattle @ Sep 13th 2009 8:11PM
I wish they had patched bionic commando. Stupid checkpoints. Well at least I paid $20...
MRLN the Amazing @ Sep 13th 2009 8:44PM
That seems to be reminding people of a lot of things... A massive Marlboro, DBZ, Lost Planet...
And nobody sees a striking resemblance to Bryyo? Oh wait, nobody bought that game. :(
Bryan @ Sep 13th 2009 9:25PM
I wonder why Square has never been sued by Marlboro.
ColossalHat @ Sep 14th 2009 12:33AM
Because the creature's name is "Malboro" there's but one R in the name.
Bryan @ Sep 14th 2009 12:40AM
... Drunk commenting. Don't do it.
DarkXane @ Sep 14th 2009 2:43AM
lol... After seeing that picture, this came to my mind: "What the fuck happened to Pitey Piranha?"
