ESRB rates Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for Wii
It's been over a year since we last heard rumors of a re-Vamped Castlevania installment on the WiiWare service -- now, a new ESRB listing has rekindled the flames of conjecture. The board recently gave a Teen rating to Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for the Wii -- as you may have noticed, it shares the suffix applied to the similarly renovated Gradius ReBirth and Contra ReBirth, both of which surfaced on Nintendo's download platform this year.
According to the ESRB rating, the game will finally deliver the "side-scrolling action" which classic 'Vania fans have been clamoring for. If it's based off the Game Boy title of the same name, our only request is that they smooth out the game's unscalable difficulty curve. To this day, we're not sure that game has a second level.

Good news. Probably means they're going to add even more Castlevania goodness.
Jimbotron @ Sep 14th 2009 9:36AM
As long as it's classic Castlevania with proper levels and not one that requires backtracking like all the titles in the last 15 years.
Mauricio Hernández Garza @ Sep 13th 2009 3:41PM
Maybe this will make up for Judgment.
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Sep 13th 2009 3:44PM
I think we need at least three GOOD Castlevania games to make up for Judgement.
holyice7 @ Sep 13th 2009 4:09PM
We need IGA to get thrown under a -bus- to make up for Judgment.
Balloonfighter99 @ Sep 13th 2009 9:27PM
braeburn , it is vey important that you tell me exactly what you did with the whole bottle. No sudden movements , calmly...
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 13th 2009 3:41PM
They also have Salamander ReBirth registered... I hope that after this, they do a Goemon ReBirth game... that woudl be awesome!
I already too many Metroidvania games lately (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruins and Order of Ecclesia), so a stage based game like Castlevania IV on the SNEs would be perfect.
I just hope they allow me to move while in the air... oh and also, to be able to jump while I'm on a stair.
=p
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Sep 13th 2009 3:45PM
Goemon ReBirth... Oh, please, let this happen! The series has been dormant for far too long.
Uncontrol @ Sep 13th 2009 3:45PM
i will buy a wii when mystical ninja starring goemon appears on the virtual console, and not one second sooner
Sarge @ Sep 13th 2009 3:54PM
There's no such thing as too much "Metroidvania". Seriously.
That being said, something along the lines of Super Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood will be very welcome. Personally, I'd like to see it along the lines of Simon's Quest (although more navigable than that game), with the gameplay of the aforementioned entries.
Any way they go about it, though, should be fun. And if it ends up being a remake of the Adventure titles, lets hope that it also includes the much better Belmont's Revenge in the mix.
holyice7 @ Sep 13th 2009 4:09PM
Airborne movement? Heck no. This isn't your namby-pamby girly Castlevania, this is a man's game. A man's man's game.
Incidentally, no stair jumps or eight-way whip swinging, either, I'm sure. One of the many legitimate improvements from Super IV that just never came around again.
I look forward to whoring myself out to Castlevania once again this...uh, whenever it is.
braeburn @ Sep 13th 2009 6:34PM
Like Fernando, I already too many Metroidvania games lately (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruins and Order of Ecclesia). And I accidentally the whole bottle. Is this bad?
Snake Robot Podium @ Sep 14th 2009 9:00AM
If someone's going to remake a Metroidvania from the Game Boy, it should be Metroid 2.
I think a lot of people missed this game, and a WiiWare version could be the new 2D Metroid we've been asking for. I've heard offhand that it wasn't that great, but I don't think the fans would be attached enough to protest changing it for the better.

What happened to my AVATAR

I'll probably get downvoted, but what size does my picture have to be in order to make it an avatar?
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 13th 2009 4:17PM
64 x 64 pixels.
(I will probably get downvoted for answering)
Mr Khan @ Sep 13th 2009 4:47PM
It seems to me that the rules are arbitrary. I've *never* had to put in a 64 x 64 picture, but nothing but JPEG has ever worked for me.
Though the avatar system is rather pointless now, since it just regurgitates ever avatar you've ever used since October of 2008.
bongoes the Black Lantern @ Sep 13th 2009 4:57PM
I like the avatar system right now. Every time I comment I try to guess what avatar will show up. Right now I'm hoping for Black Lantern Firestorm.
Ipsum @ Sep 13th 2009 4:58PM
I'll probably get downvoted for saying I'll probably get downvoted.
bongoes the Black Lantern @ Sep 13th 2009 6:42PM
@ Ipsum
You'll probably get upvoted for saying you'll get downvoted. Though now you may get downvoted because I said that. But i'll probably get downvoted now.
I'm secretly hoping no one votes. Now I'll get donwvoted. Or upvoted. Depends on what mood everyone is in.
Doctor John Smith @ Sep 13th 2009 3:45PM
I really hope this is a Metroidvania title, or, if not, there's one on the horizon for the DS. With the new direction of the franchise on the 360, part of me is very worried that there won't be any more of those sort of games for a long while.
Gun Barrier @ Sep 13th 2009 4:26PM
Don't forget about Other M, that one may go it's own route for the better.
bongoes the Black Lantern @ Sep 13th 2009 4:56PM
I really hope there's a Metroid Metroidvania game for the DS.
Doctor John Smith @ Sep 13th 2009 5:11PM
I am very much excited for Metroid: Other M, and Shadow Complex will be my first purchase for the 360 when I get one.
But I really love the Metroidvania Castlevanias. Just something about the gameplay *and* the atmosphere that elevates my enjoyment above that of other Castlevanias, or other Metroidvania games. Because I am weird like that.
Though a DS Metroid Metroidvania would be fantastic.
Jimbotron @ Sep 14th 2009 9:43AM
I hope this ISN'T a Metroidvania title. I never like Castlevania since it changed to that format, and there have been more than enough of those games. Time to revert back to the old level-style gameplay.
Chintz @ Sep 15th 2009 7:50PM
I actually liked that game, mainly for Stage 3 where there would be all these spiked walls, floors and ceilings coming at you, and for those rolling exploding eyeballs that would punch holes in the bridges.
The game wasn't that tough though. Certainly not as hard as the latter stages of Castlevania 1.
Mr Khan @ Sep 13th 2009 4:51PM
I remember IGA saying that we would get one in a similar vein as this, pending the sales of Megaman 9 (which is supposed to have done quite well)
futurebiblehero @ Sep 13th 2009 4:55PM
They have nowhere to go but up; Adventure was pretty bad (unlike the wonderful Belmont's Revenge which is pictured). I know we'd all like to think every early 2D Castlevania game was a masterpiece, but Castlevania Adventure has to be one of the most excruciatingly slow and boring games of the era.
Lurkero @ Sep 13th 2009 7:10PM
I was under the impression that Wii exclusive release for the ReBirth titles wouldn't result in good sales, but if Konami is making Castlevania exclusive also, then I guess they're doing okay. I still believe it's a mistake to be Wii only.
This will be a Castlevania that I miss out on.
Fernando Rocker @ Sep 13th 2009 7:19PM
Why is it a mistake?
Mr Khan @ Sep 13th 2009 8:06PM
Possible that our friend is laboring under the myth of poor Wii 3rd party sales, especially for digitally distributed games. The platform has proven itself quite viable, however. It's pretty much the only thing keeping Hudson going at this point.
Shadow Hog @ Sep 13th 2009 7:36PM
I know it's unlikely, but if they're going to do a new 2D Castlevania adventure in the vein of Castlevanias 1-4 and Dracula X/XX, I really hope they cover Julius Belmont's quest in 1999 (the one mentioned in the Sorrow games). That would be an incredibly badass way for the series to return to form (not that the SotN-style form was bad - far from it, it was arguably better, it's just gotten a bit stale).
Roncore @ Sep 13th 2009 9:46PM
if you don't know how excited I am about this, just look ar my avatar!
Faceman @ Sep 14th 2009 12:08AM
I owned a gameboy myself but I'm convinced playing an original gameboy game on a tv would make my eyes explode.
Shadow Hog @ Sep 14th 2009 1:29AM
I wouldn't know why; it's really not all that bad. Worked for the Super Game Boy, worked for the Game Boy Player... It's just the same game, but blown up to the size of a TV. Issues like screen space might be present, but they'd be just as present if you played it on the Game Boy itself.
Either way, assuming Joystiq is right and this is a remake of Castlevania Adventure, issues such as low-res grayscale graphics in a very small screen space would be completely alleviated by all-new, full-color sprite work with tons of (presumably tastefully used) particle and shader effects (inasmuch as the Wii can do those - and it can, just not as well as the 360/PS3), high-quality audio, and a greatly improved screen size (160x144 vs. 640x480 or 480p - it doesn't take a mathematician to see that that's better), et cetera. Basically, see Contra Rebirth et al. If your eyes do any exploding, it'd be purely of the "due to sheer awesomeness" variety.
JoNJoN @ Sep 14th 2009 12:53AM
AAAAAWWWWW I got all excited and thought the Virtual Console service was finally coming to my DSi. I mean this is cool and all but a little bit of a letdown from what I originally thought when I saw the old Gameboy screenshot.
Neter @ Sep 14th 2009 1:16AM
A Rocket Knight Adventures ReBirth using the Wii pointer would be a like a wet dream for me.
Mighty Ponygirl @ Sep 14th 2009 9:04AM
I really enjoyed Adventure. It was difficult as all get out (seriously Simon -- get the lead out!) but I was able to beat it and eventually got it down.
Apart from making the most of the limit graphics of the original GameBoy, Castlevania Adventure also had a great soundtrack -- they did a lot with what they had.
Alex @ Sep 14th 2009 9:09AM
Oh man, Castlevania Adventure is like my third favorite Castlevania game. I'm totally getting this the day it comes out!
Now all they need to do is release the original Dracula X on the North American Virtual Console already. They released it in Japan, and had it rated by the ESRB for release over here. Dammit Nintendo get off you ass and put it out already!
Alex @ Sep 14th 2009 9:25AM
Actually, Christopher Belmont was the protagonist in the first 2 Game Boy games.
And heck yes, the soundtrack was incredibly. Battle of the Holy, the level one BGM, is my favorite Castlevania tune. So of course with my luck that was the only time it was ever used...
Alex @ Sep 14th 2009 9:26AM
Dammit I hit reply to Mighty Ponygirl, why it didn't post correctly I don't know.
