Just Cause 2 dev diary is free, free fallin'
Spider-Man's got nothing on Just Cause 2's returning protagonist, Rico Rodriguez. Sure, Spidey's got a whole host of arachnid super-enhancements -- but Rico's various modes of aerial travel make web-swinging seem so ... pedestrian. The dev diary posted above gives a great look at our hero's proclivity for base jumping, hookshotting, parachuting and helicopter-jacking. We're sure Isaac Newton would have a few hang-ups about the poetic liberties Just Cause 2 is taking with physics -- but you'll hear no objections from us.

Now say nuclear wessels!!!
Solace @ Sep 13th 2009 1:39PM
was I watching a parachute add on for Bionic Commando?
waves @ Sep 13th 2009 1:44PM
Almost, except for the lack of deadly translucent radiation...
Look At This Suit @ Sep 13th 2009 1:47PM
Not to mention the obvious lack of Wifearm.
boing.inc @ Sep 13th 2009 2:50PM
...and compared to Bionic Commando this looks like it will actually be open-world.
Mazrael @ Sep 13th 2009 4:14PM
looks like the Wolverine first mission intro..
joe @ Sep 13th 2009 5:30PM
my thoughts exactly....next for this game's add-on (ripoff) thell be a jetpack *cough* dark void *cough*
joeman @ Sep 13th 2009 7:02PM
You know, the original Just Cause has similar game mechanics and it came out way before Bionic Commando.
eldee @ Sep 13th 2009 8:31PM
... and dark void.
methinks you whiners were all of the people who never played the first game but still shit-talked it.
just cause was awesome.. just cause 2 looks to be epic. I can't wait, bring it on.
joe @ Sep 13th 2009 11:35PM
to eldee: 1rst , the original just cause game was released 2006 and had NO GRAPPLING HOOKS! Bionic commando for PS3 came out 2009 and for u info, even IN its original form in the NES had a grappling gun . get the picture? nah, u dont.Just Cause 1 sucked and so does ur comment. Try again...defend JC2.....come on....
Pat @ Sep 21st 2009 12:55AM
@ joe
Before talking like that to anybody you should do two things: a) read the comment you are replying to, and b) research what you are saying.
In regards to b) the first Just Cause had, in fact, the grappling gun and was open world to boot. While it seems that the functionality has been expanded for JC2, that tool was already in JC1. And, just like you said, it came out back in 2006. Wanna check? Here you go:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe3brwgvIgk&feature=related
On the other hand, we all know what the original BC had, thank you very much. Neither joeman nor eldee ever said anything about the ORIGINAL Bionic Commando copying Just Cause. If you had read their comments you would have seen that they were talking about the 09 version also of the same name which was in 3D just like JC. In other words, they were comparing oranges to oranges.
If you are not going to like the game (which it seems very unlikely no matter how good the game ends up being) at least have the courtesy of refuting comments maturely and by informing yourself before opening your mouth.

Wiizer ($299) Having BC On Your Launch Console? (Priceless) @ Sep 13th 2009 1:47PM
The flashy dev diary effects did not work for Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, and they're not going to work for Just Cause 2. It makes them look really douchey.
David [Steam: ZayCube] @ Sep 13th 2009 2:01PM
"A douche is a device used to introduce a stream of water into the body for medical or hygienic reasons, or the stream of water itself.
Douche usually refers to vaginal irrigation, the rinsing of the vagina, but it can also refer to the rinsing of any body cavity. A douche bag is a piece of equipment for douching—a bag for holding the fluid used in douching. To avoid transferring intestinal bacteria into the vagina, the same bag must not be used for a vaginal douche and an enema"
carmaction @ Sep 13th 2009 2:02PM
Your comment makes you seem a bit douchey.
Factoid.
NoughtSoClever @ Sep 13th 2009 2:39PM
You are like some kind of douche-ologist. So from now on should we call you "Dr. Douche"?
Wiizer ($299) Having BC On Your Launch Console? (Priceless) @ Sep 13th 2009 4:39PM
Yes, call me Dr. Douche.
I prescribe each of you to get some better taste in games and call me in the morning.
i.c. weiner @ Sep 13th 2009 5:55PM
i don't think he was referring to you wiizer when he said douche-ologist
Amun @ Sep 13th 2009 9:27PM
I agree with the douche comment. A game built around a single interesting mechanic (unrealistic parachuting) doesn't make a good game... hearing devs fawn all over their own creation doesn't make good PR...
Jared @ Sep 13th 2009 1:51PM
Looks cool! Unlimited grapple + parachute is nuts.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 13th 2009 2:37PM
AGREED.
damnreds @ Sep 13th 2009 2:46PM
agreed. reminds me a lot of prototype, gameplay wise. which is a compliment, as i really enjoyed prototype's gameplay.
grappling hook = whipfist power
parachute = glide power
The Baron @ Sep 13th 2009 2:46PM
Yeah, I felt the movement in the first one could have been a bit more free at times. I just hope they make the missions a bit more varied and remove the endlessly spawning from all sides enemy system.
This looks very much like the game the original should have been.
LadiesMan217 @ Sep 13th 2009 3:07PM
to get the highest base jump, couldn't that dude just have jumped out of the helicopter, seeing as it was clearly higher than the peak of the mountain and the bus? or is that not possible in the game?
xLordOblivionx @ Sep 13th 2009 3:11PM
@Ladiesman
I don't think jumping out of a helicopter is considered a "base" jump.
marvin69 @ Sep 13th 2009 3:17PM
@LadiesMan217
B.A.S.E = Buildings. Antennas, Spans (Bridges), Earth
Airplane, Helicopter, Balloon, or any other flying craft = Skydiving
The Baron @ Sep 13th 2009 3:22PM
Helicopters, planes and even fighter jets were fully pilotable in the first game, I'd imagine the same is true here.
Shadsy @ Sep 13th 2009 1:52PM
Wow. Maybe JC2 is shaping up to be the game I really hoped the original was going to be.
mikael @ Sep 13th 2009 1:56PM
And that will be the next Swedish developer to file for bankruptcy.
joe @ Sep 13th 2009 11:46PM
lol good one!
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 13th 2009 2:00PM
This game is looking fantastic and is really flying under the radar. I had pretty much forgotten about it's existence.
MystileArmor @ Sep 13th 2009 2:16PM
I had no clue Dave Grohl had an ugly older brother that worked on this game.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 13th 2009 2:51PM
No.
MystileArmor @ Sep 13th 2009 3:27PM
yes
James Lockwood @ Sep 13th 2009 2:21PM
Looks you, Griffin...
*puts on sunglasses*
...just made a pun.
YEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
James Lockwood @ Sep 13th 2009 2:23PM
Damn it, I got so excited my ability to form a coherent sentence suffered.
Frank Tinsley @ Sep 13th 2009 2:23PM
I'm sure this game has a lot of great things in it but dang, after going to PAX and then seeing this... why do 90% of the games now have almost exactly the same visual style in everything from logos to in game graphics? It makes everything look so dang tired.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 13th 2009 2:33PM
I agree with you somewhat. I agree that a lot of visuals have been very regurgitated and tiresome, but that's not to say that developers are pushing for more and more intriguing visuals. For example, Assassin's Creed 2. The dazzling colors, textures, and lighting are something that's very new. If you look at the how the designed and created the setting, characters, and environments, they're always breathtaking.
Glenn @ Sep 13th 2009 2:34PM
That's why im buying borderlands.
Premature ejaculation man @ Sep 13th 2009 10:28PM
I'm a sucker for massive jungle/tropical environments. Its the dilapidated urban environments that I feel are overused.
Also brown.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Sep 13th 2009 2:23PM
I honestly don't care what reviewers say. For me, the first Just Cause was terrific. It was a great adventure for me. That being said, I am psyched for this one. Anyone with me?
Murtaug @ Sep 13th 2009 4:37PM
I am, yes.
I really enjoyed the hell out of the original even if the world was mostly empty and vehicle control was wish-washy. I still spent a lot of time on that island just cruising around and doing stupid stunts.
Looks like all this time they have spent with the sequel is paying off, things look a lot tighter than the first game. I also love that they did not get rid of some of the over the top stuff like the infinite grapple and parachute, but instead embraced it and expanded it.
Teph @ Sep 14th 2009 1:15PM
I'm with you as well.
I loved the first one. and even though it did have it's problems, it was fantastically fun.
Looks like this one fixes the issues, and pushes the fun up to the n'th degree. I think all the people who only see the grapple/parachute as gimmicky and unrealistic forgot what games are all about-
Fun.
Spybreak @ Sep 13th 2009 2:37PM
hehe do you think they enjoyed playing any spiderman games?!
Glenn @ Sep 13th 2009 2:36PM
+1
Marius @ Sep 13th 2009 2:52PM
This game interest me to no end
Ryan @ Sep 13th 2009 3:06PM
Wow thanks a million for posting this joystiq. Just Cause 1 was amazing, and its great to see that JC2 is going to be even better. I hope this game has multiplayer, that would pretty badass.
