EA Montreal VP unconvinced by movies that 'really respect' games
During an interview with Videogamer, EA Montreal VP Alain Tascan expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Army of Two movie, most notably for Scott Z. Burns' script. Tascan seems to be satisfied with what he's seen so far, describing EA's approach to the film as being quite hands-off. "We're working together," he said. "We explain what the world is about, what the missions are about, and then we leave the guy to do his job."
While this shows confidence in Burns, Tascan seems worried about the effects of an overbearing game bible. "So far, when movies try to really respect the games they're not always the best quality," Tascan remarked.
Well, that explains it: game adaptations have just been too slavishly devoted to the source material. Oh, if only DOA: Dead or Alive hadn't been so intent on including the franchise's trademark nanobots and assassin sunglasses.

The fact that it's constantly these B-list (or lower) games getting movies, and almost never the A-listers that says something about the state of this cross-medium venture in the first place.

Hey, DOA was a fun movie. Maybe I don't take movies as seriously as other people do, but I loved the action and fun of it all.
The only thing I didn't like was some of the cartoony sequences with that loser who was in to Helena. You know, where the hearts appeared and the music played. That was lame.
Batzarro @ Sep 14th 2009 1:33PM
I enjoyed it for what it was as well, but it pissed me off that they had foley sounds like planes and shotguns during fights. I mean, the faights where okay, why put in goofy noises?
Stevetrop @ Sep 14th 2009 12:54PM
My gosh while that is a picture of army of 2. It kinda makes me think of a gears of war game mixed with lethal weapon. Gears of Lethal Weapon War.
Two thirds of the game you'd hear the yelling between Murtaugh and Riggs. Then Riggs doing something crazy still making it out with getting hurt.
Batzarro @ Sep 14th 2009 1:31PM
No, on the DoA film they definitively should have gone with the Ninja Clone girls, Funny Looking Tengus trying to destroy the world, girls fighting over vegetables, guys trying to showoff to their dead girlfriends, ridiculous shots of moles getting named "Tina", and of course, any of the alternate suits Zack wears.
Either that, or they could have made the assassin an assassin and included Raido in there instead of Eric Roberts.

I'm sorry, but with the exception of Tomb Raider, how many game-based movies actually stick close to the source material?
RE? Nope.
Doom? Nope.
Mario? Nope.
MK? You can make an argument there but the acting, special fx and script was horrible.

Dark Wayne, you have turned replying into an art form.
Rather than using "...." to show pause, you instead chose an entirely different post and it worked to your advantage sir.

Going to movies from games is like going from a floating point number to an integer number, you loose data in the latter and depth/quality/story/etc in the former.

no more video game movies... please....
