A dumb move on Nintendo's part, i should say. It'll only look like they're trying to counter Sony and Microsoft, and the time isn't ripe for that quite yet (the ideal time would be when they start bringing out all those core titles), and they're going to be blowing quite a bit of potential monies (especially since the Yen exchange rate is so bad)

It's a move they had to inevitably make, but they're stupid to not hold out until past the holidays.

I'm not sure only a $50 price cut will help Nintendo since consumers are interested in its innovative control scheme and not its final price point.

Hm, Nintendo's getting there. They've been pretty quiet as of late.

Rumors of a price drop has to be real, seeing as the other 2 consoles are only $50 more than the Wii. Hell, even Sony's handheld is just as much as the Wii.

I wonder why anyone would doubt this being real.

It's real. TRU doesn't do sales on consoles. Period. They throw in a bunch of (mostly) useless shit sometimes, or a giftcard, but the actual price NEVER drops. Profit margin is too small (like 7%). Could be photoshopped, of course, but it is certainly not a TRU sale.

A drop to $50 would probably get Nintendo to cost for a system.

You've actually got it backwards. A drop *by* $50 might get Nintendo to break-even, at least in America, due to the the losses against the Yen.

You have to realize that the costs for the Wii weren't going to go down by that much, mostly because most of the parts used in the Wii are used only in the Wii, and in no other existing commercial product. namely the CPU, GPU, and special, dual-size slot-loading disc-drive. The other parts that go in there were more or less as cheap as they were going to be back in 06 (like Wireless G, BlueTooth, and SD, all were very widespread by then)

The only costs they could have really brought down over time were the manufacturing costs, which probably have gone down, but have they gone down by enough to offset the Yen losses? Who knows

Yeah, Nintendo has to pay full price for both CPU and GPU, as they're only used in that one product, and unlike MS, they don't own the rights to the actual chips and can have any company fabricate them.

I'm sure it doesnt cost a whole lot for a Radeon 9-series based GPU and a PowerPC G3 with some G4 instructions though nowadays.

I remember reading that the CPU was like $9 or something, ridiculously low, but not at all likely to go lower, because there's no demand for such a low-level PowerPC, aside from the demand created by Nintendo themselves.

I just called my local TRU 1 minute ago to confirm this and they said that No the Wii has not gotten a price cut and it is still $249.99 US.

Sounds like Nintendo is getting ripped off.

But at least everyone already knows how to program for the overpriced Gamecube2x hardware!

I think that this might see a slight increase in the Wii sales, I personally have been holding off since I really would enjoy a Black Wii, I think Nintendo really will decide how they drop there price cuts based on the profit they turn on the system, aside other types of investments that might be in the companies pro-folio, they definitely always want to turn a profit on their systems due to thats the companies primary source of revenue of course aside licensing and other types that are part of all companies business models.
I Personally think that if I could afford all the systems and time, I would purchase them all, but until I am able to clone myself and experience it all, I will wait until my personal economy gets a plus 1.
Speaking of a Black Will, I think Kanye will somehow make a retarded in regards to it, but that might just be me.

'bout time. Being only $50 lower than the PS3 makes it look even more underpowered.

A Black Wii would be better than this shit. New colors (like black!), would sell more Wii's than a $50 price drop. A $50 price drop makes it what $199? BS Nintendo, the Xbox Arcade is $199 and offers the best online play, better controller schemes, more storage, and a HELL OF A FUCKING better library than the Wii's shovel ware library. A $150 price drop on the Wii would be better suited to what the Wii is worth now with a future library looking like shit with one or two good games. Seriously Nintendo, the casual market has been saturated and the only people your marketing to now in terms of hardware is the hardcore gamer that still has not bought your shitty gamecube hardware. Get your ass in gear and sell something we would give a shit about.

It's a fake. The only mention of "Nintendo" occurs at the bottom right corner. The Wiimote is an old press kit photo and is inconsistently lit.The Wiimote has no glove.Comparing with this weeks, the "12.99 value" on the right seems to be out of place as the leading line.My last point is that, since whoever made this had nothing to base the word "cut" on, he failed to realize that with words that use variable casing (aside the first letter), ALL consonants use CAPS, unlike the "t" in "cut". A good rule of thumb is that if part of a line is going to use variable casing, the rest will follow. The only exception I could find is the word "ALL" which is either a lead vowel, or a key word.

The problem with used games for game publishers is that they see no money from the sale of the used games. When GameStop sells a used game they are the only ones to see any money from the sale. They make on generally make 100-300% profit with every used game/accessory they sell.
