Despite being absent from the August NPD figures, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box managed to be somewhat of a success in the US. Gamasutra obtained some data from NPD that shows the game sold 65,700 copies in the month of August, which isn't all that bad considering the game went on sale August 24.
On the flip side, the figure can also be seen as a failure for Nintendo, based on how much money the company sank into the marketing machine trying to get ladies interested. Regardless, we're hoping the game fares better in September, because we'd like to actually play the other Layton games.

This is one of those games that's going to sell consitently over time, rather than selling very well at launch then falling off the charts.

that pretty good too bad portable gaming in the US is still falling under the stereotype of kid and teens area. so think this the best it will get. UK i think is the bigger money maker

My girlfriend made a point to buy this the day after release, such a phenomenally awesome game. She has a bad habit of passing out at the end of the night while playing, guess some of those brain-busters are a little too much too handle at the end of the night :P

God this game was good... I'll just die if they don't bring the third to the US. At the end of the game, it did have the "To be continued" screen, but that doesn't really confirm anything for sure...

65k a week sounds like average for Nintendo platforms. I'd wait a couple of months before saying whether it's a failure or not.

Anyone else in Chicago area see the ridonkulous amount of ads for this game on the CTA? I got on the bus yesterday morning and the ONLY ads on it, inside and out, were Professor Layton ads. There were even ads on the ceiling, which I've never seen before...

@mogster - hmmm - sure the storyline's entertaining (and also it is kind of amusing that this silly little puzzle game is probably the DS game series with the most, and most expensive, specially-made and fully hand-animated cutscenes)... but I think if you actively don't like puzzles, it is probably best not to get the game, given that the entire gameplay is solving 80+ of them. :)
Apart from rampant puzzle-haters, though, sure I agree everyone should play these games. It's probably my second favourite franchise on DS (after Phoenix Wright etc).

Did my part, bought it first week of release. It kept me from going insane when I was stuck in the car for 10 hours this past weekend. It also keeps me from going to bed earlier than 3AM. Damn you and your puzzles, Layton.

Duh, didn't they know that all girls care about are pink things? They should have marketed in a bundle with a OMG lilac professor Layton DS bundle. That would have made it FLY off the shelves. Maybe Nintendo should take a cue from Sony, and they'd start selling some units.
Wait.....

When all is said and done, this game will have stellar sales. What terrible spin, Dave. Every game doesn't have to sell 1 million day one to be successful - especially a DS game. You should know this by now.

They are. Less intensive gamers tend to wait to buy games until the holidays or some other special occasion. Besides, getting it out now and doing the advertising now means it's not cluttering up the ad spaces for the October-November releases, which are targeted towards the kinds of players who do buy games day-one.
