Professor Layton and the Decent US Sales Debut
Despite being absent from the August NPD figures, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box managed to be somewhat of a success in the US. Gamasutra obtained some data from NPD that shows the game sold 65,700 copies in the month of August, which isn't all that bad considering the game went on sale August 24.
On the flip side, the figure can also be seen as a failure for Nintendo, based on how much money the company sank into the marketing machine trying to get ladies interested. Regardless, we're hoping the game fares better in September, because we'd like to actually play the other Layton games.

I jsut got off the train into the first city, with that said I cannot say that I am enjoying it more then the first Layton, I am actually spending more time with scribblenauts right now.
Loki_d20 @ Sep 15th 2009 8:21PM
Apples and oranges. I'm playing both, but Scribblenauts is definitely taking up more of my time right now, but that's just because it's something completely new to me, not because the second Layton game is any worse or less worthy than the first.
Mr Khan @ Sep 15th 2009 7:50PM
Only time will tell. Layton certainly isn't the kind of game that's going to be front-loaded with hype
Leroy_Rocktopus needs a PS3 @ Sep 15th 2009 7:54PM
This is one of those games that's going to sell consitently over time, rather than selling very well at launch then falling off the charts.
chibi_wings @ Sep 15th 2009 9:00PM
yeah I think so too. Wasn't it the same for the first Layton game?
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 15th 2009 7:55PM
This game deserves every penny it makes.
ballistic3188 @ Sep 15th 2009 7:56PM
that pretty good too bad portable gaming in the US is still falling under the stereotype of kid and teens area. so think this the best it will get. UK i think is the bigger money maker
Markez @ Sep 15th 2009 8:12PM
My girlfriend made a point to buy this the day after release, such a phenomenally awesome game. She has a bad habit of passing out at the end of the night while playing, guess some of those brain-busters are a little too much too handle at the end of the night :P
jordan @ Sep 15th 2009 9:14PM
i have one of them lady things in my bed too it does just that :D
Matisyahu Serious @ Sep 15th 2009 8:19PM
65K in a week is a failure?
i never want to live on that particular flip side.
idowantpie @ Sep 16th 2009 2:34PM
God this game was good... I'll just die if they don't bring the third to the US. At the end of the game, it did have the "To be continued" screen, but that doesn't really confirm anything for sure...
Bradwart @ Sep 15th 2009 8:33PM
65k a week sounds like average for Nintendo platforms. I'd wait a couple of months before saying whether it's a failure or not.
Punishment4Gluttons @ Sep 15th 2009 8:38PM
I like this game, but Scribblenauts has taken over my DS
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 15th 2009 8:55PM
I want to play the other games- so I suggest you buy it (yes, that is selfish).
Rein [Prime Minister of the city-state of New Bjork] @ Sep 15th 2009 9:03PM
Anyone else in Chicago area see the ridonkulous amount of ads for this game on the CTA? I got on the bus yesterday morning and the ONLY ads on it, inside and out, were Professor Layton ads. There were even ads on the ceiling, which I've never seen before...
Old Professor Zertoss @ Sep 15th 2009 9:09PM
I just visited my sister last week and she told me how much she enjoyed Layton's first game and how she couldn't wait to get the new one.
It sells, it just doesn't sell all of its copies at once.
Mr Mobius - the wandering artist @ Sep 15th 2009 9:13PM
So I assume I should definitely get onto the Layton train and buy the first game? I just haven't got around to doing it, and wonder if I should.
Rob @ Sep 15th 2009 9:31PM
If you like puzzles, get it.
Mogster @ Sep 16th 2009 4:06AM
If you don't like puzzles, get it.
These games have awesome and compelling storylines.
Meh @ Sep 16th 2009 12:18PM
Yup, the sequel's story kicks Lost in the balls.
sam @ Sep 16th 2009 6:43PM
@mogster - hmmm - sure the storyline's entertaining (and also it is kind of amusing that this silly little puzzle game is probably the DS game series with the most, and most expensive, specially-made and fully hand-animated cutscenes)... but I think if you actively don't like puzzles, it is probably best not to get the game, given that the entire gameplay is solving 80+ of them. :)
Apart from rampant puzzle-haters, though, sure I agree everyone should play these games. It's probably my second favourite franchise on DS (after Phoenix Wright etc).
Faceman @ Sep 15th 2009 10:58PM
A LOT of Layton: DB ads on the NYC subway
Asg @ Sep 16th 2009 12:29AM
I got my copy don't blame me
deluded spider @ Sep 16th 2009 1:28AM
Did my part, bought it first week of release. It kept me from going insane when I was stuck in the car for 10 hours this past weekend. It also keeps me from going to bed earlier than 3AM. Damn you and your puzzles, Layton.
JeezWhiz87 @ Sep 16th 2009 5:50AM
Duh, didn't they know that all girls care about are pink things? They should have marketed in a bundle with a OMG lilac professor Layton DS bundle. That would have made it FLY off the shelves. Maybe Nintendo should take a cue from Sony, and they'd start selling some units.
Wait.....
Kenology18 @ Sep 16th 2009 8:53AM
When all is said and done, this game will have stellar sales. What terrible spin, Dave. Every game doesn't have to sell 1 million day one to be successful - especially a DS game. You should know this by now.
Evan @ Sep 16th 2009 9:12AM
August release? They should be pushing this game for Christmas.
John Z @ Sep 16th 2009 10:15AM
They are. Less intensive gamers tend to wait to buy games until the holidays or some other special occasion. Besides, getting it out now and doing the advertising now means it's not cluttering up the ad spaces for the October-November releases, which are targeted towards the kinds of players who do buy games day-one.
Juande [Xylon Uxkid] @ Sep 16th 2009 3:50PM
One of those copy is mine! Show some love for Prof Layton!
