PS3 Firmware 3.01 fix now available
If you've had troubles playing Uncharted since the arrival of PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0, you and Nathan can finally get back to business with the now-available 3.01 update, which Sony says addresses the issue. However, if you were one of those complaining about your controllers not functioning properly after the update, it would seem that you're still out of luck.
So, that's the news, you can finally play Uncharted again. But jeez, could the timing be any worse?

I doubt Sony has any intentions of fixing it so non-OEM controllers will work again.
Barry32171 @ Sep 15th 2009 10:44AM
The white controllers are OEM... FYI.
As for the update in general, I'm going to wait, given past history with these small updates sometimes screwing up machines already working, I don't want mine to fall victim, in case there is an issue...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Sep 15th 2009 10:48AM
Barry Actually it was Discovered that the White controllers in question ARE fakes.....
Barry32171 @ Sep 15th 2009 11:03AM
Interesting, thanks Chris. I do know the white controller I have is a different serial number, maybe that's why I've not had a problem with it. (Got mine from Play-Asia.)
cdn.merkley @ Sep 15th 2009 5:46PM
whoever said white controllers are fakes...? let's see the link and reading on that... I don't believe it for a second.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 15th 2009 11:16AM
non-OEM controllers work fine. It's knockoff controllers that don't work.
Tiptup300 @ Sep 15th 2009 2:24PM
Also, note to people saying about the frequences causing the ps3 to stop media playback.
I'm not talking about it going into the browser or games. I kinda half expect it not to work there, but if you just go into the options screen or just quickly look at your friends stats the music will stop.
solarshadows074 @ Sep 15th 2009 10:14AM
how is the timing worse?
SoulBlade @ Sep 15th 2009 10:18AM
gotta rip sony somehow...
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 15th 2009 10:21AM
Yeah I didn't understand that either. The demo is available today for those who pre-ordered the game. So....
a)Why do you need to be playing Uncharted 1 right now?
b)Why in the world did you buy that ugly white controller in the first place?
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 15th 2009 12:16PM
The demo is available today?..
My pre-order slip says "Code promotion: Valid *8/19/2009-9/18/2009
SimbaDogg @ Sep 15th 2009 4:47PM
uhh....why would i need to be playing uncharted 1 now? well....i just got it for 25 shipped. never played it, and i have to get er done before uncharted 2. so yah, thanks for looking out for people like me sony
SoulBlade @ Sep 15th 2009 10:19AM
i recently started playing uncharted again in prep for the sequel so i've been avoiding this. glad they fixed it - will update when i get home so i don't get those annoying messages and can log back into the store.
cdn.merkley @ Sep 15th 2009 10:32AM
Version 3.0 Firmware made alot of 60GB launch machines have the "red light of death" ... and there are PAGES of feedback on it under Sony's own website, but JoyStiq isn't even including or reporting on that? How about some attention to THAT matter? Broken joysticks are one thing... whole console being screwed up and Sony expecting people to pay $200 CDN to repair is CRAZY. They are culling the PS3 Launch editions because they know that most people won't fix, they will just downgrade to a slim...
IF YOU HAVE A FAILING 60GB LAUNCH VERSION ADD YOUR NAME TO THE LIST OF DEAD:

My 60 GB Cadillac launch PS3 made it through the update just fine. Now I just have figure out how to turn the sparklies off.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 15th 2009 10:39AM
Would read again.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 15th 2009 10:39AM
To turn the sparkles off change your theme settings from Original to Classic.
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 15th 2009 10:42AM
My 60gb ps3 is probably the finest piece of gaming hardware I've ever encountered. It withstands all of the messed up firmware updates Sony puts out, withstands my dusty room, and doesn't even flinch after a few hundred hours of gaming.
Sounds like you just got bad luck brah.
hplcman @ Sep 15th 2009 11:11AM
My 60gb did get the YLOD, but only after several hundreds of hours of gaming and movie watching and living in an un-insulated craphole of a rental that would turn into an oven inside on a hot day. That poor fan would be working in overdrive the instant I turn it on. Got it fixed, slapped a 500gb hardrive into it, moved to a place with attic insulation and (hopefully) won't have any issues with my baby again. But as long as Sony is willing to fix it I'll be sending it in. I LOVE that machine!!! 100% BC FTW!!!!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 15th 2009 11:21AM
My 60GB already broke months ago. Trust me when I say it's almost certainly not the firmware, it's just that the 60GBs have problem. For starters, the optical drives just aren't very good.
Anyway, I played through Batman:Arkham Asylum in 3 sittings in two days on my 60GB PS3 with firmware 3.00 on it and had no crashes or glitches. So I have to declare that not only is Batman:AA not an inherent 60GB killer like ars.technica said it was, but that firmware 3.00 works fine on 60GBs at least in general.
Khaled @ Sep 15th 2009 7:00PM
60GB Broke 2 days after 3.00
I don't think it caused it, but it did cause freezing.
Shimrra @ Sep 15th 2009 10:23AM
Im knocking on woodd here cause my controllers seem to work fine.
Neil @ Sep 15th 2009 10:26AM
I've been playing Uncharted again as well, but I never had any problems with the new firmware. I have an original 60gb unit.....not sure if that's the reason why or not.
Temidien @ Sep 15th 2009 10:27AM
Put in an order for a white controller yesterday as a gift for my girlfriend (who has hijacked my PS3 to play LBP). Hoping they fix the controller issue soon, though I doubt it.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Sep 15th 2009 10:36AM
It's not a controller issue. Sony blocked knock-off controllers, commonly sold on eBay as the real thing. They have no reason to reactivate them.
speedmetaldemon @ Sep 15th 2009 4:25PM
You know what is sad, McElroy is the one who should have picked up on that obvious fact. Apparently you, a random blogger, are more informed than this paid editor.
Why do Universities have Journalism degrees if institutions don't bother requiring them. I mean McElroy could work at Fox News and be treated like a god there. A Hitler god.
Barry32171 @ Sep 15th 2009 10:47AM
I agree with Jon and tmac... My 60gb is running just fine (actually running a 320gb in it), sure it has locked up a couple of times, but nothing switching off the back power switch didn't rectify.
cdn, sounds like you had bad luck mate.
cdn.merkley @ Sep 18th 2009 2:03PM
there is "something" else to this tho... don't know if you read about the people having the problems, but just like the early firmware problem that bricked only certain machines there are far too many of us having the issue all at the same time; it's mathematically impossible that this a random failure thing... sooo many people are having the same issue at the same time... more than a co-incidence...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Sep 15th 2009 10:52AM
so ummmmmmmmm yea..... big deal...glad they got it so Uncharted issues are fixed but they really need to do better testing of firmware with games....ESPECIALLY first party titles
Havok @ Sep 15th 2009 10:56AM
Did anyone else notice that you can now turn of the whats new box from the settings menu. Or was this here since 3.0
Ashitaka @ Sep 15th 2009 11:07AM
It was already there. The first thing I did after installing 3.0 was turn off the What's New section.
chris @ Sep 15th 2009 10:57AM
I have a white Controller that has had no problems
deaftly @ Sep 15th 2009 11:08AM
nice, doesn't the uncharted 2 multi demo start today for GS preorders?
Ryan_P27 @ Sep 15th 2009 11:10AM
I just noticed the new update when i was updating my brand new PS3 Slim
CaramelZappa @ Sep 15th 2009 11:13AM
Good news. I'm a new PS3 owner and I really wanted to play though Uncharted before Uncharted 2 comes out.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 15th 2009 11:19AM
You're gonna love it. Uncharted 1 sold the system to me. And coincidentally, I'm lending my copy to my coworker who just got a Slim and is looking for a good game to play.
zero2dash @ Sep 15th 2009 11:15AM
I just bought Uncharted on Friday. Now that I finally finished Gears 2 on Insane mode (solo), I can finally get to cracking on Uncharted....hopefully finishing before the sequel comes out.
CaramelZappa @ Sep 15th 2009 11:18AM
Buh, I've been trying to play through gears 2 on insane, but the vehicle sections are just so close to impossible. Everything else just takes patience. Gears 1 I finished on insane several times no sweat, but this is driving me crazy.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 15th 2009 11:19AM
Pun....intended?
CaramelZappa @ Sep 15th 2009 11:23AM
Hah, actually, no. Didn't even notice.
Van Faulk @ Sep 15th 2009 12:17PM
except it doesn't. Uncharted won't even start up for me. If I try, I have to manually tun the console off to get out.
kutmastak @ Sep 15th 2009 12:34PM
Well, considering i just bought a new PS3 Slim and had never played Uncharted before, i was a little upset when it stopped working. It consistently froze at the same spot no matter what steps i followed. Thankfully i can get back to playing now that i beat two games in the time it took them to fix it :(
erykwithay @ Sep 15th 2009 2:10PM
So has anyone gotten the 3.01 update? I turned on my PS3 and started Uncharted, and got no prompt for an update upon starting the game. So I exited and started the game up again. Any help?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 15th 2009 2:14PM
Somewhere on the left of the XMB is an item to check for system updates. Pick it. It won't happen automatically, that's why it's an "optional update".
erykwithay @ Sep 15th 2009 2:12PM
Nevermind. I am an idiot. I didn't realize that since this is not a "mandatory" update that my PS3 wouldn't prompt me. Did the system update on my own and now things are all good. Let's see if my Uncharted save will load...
Kevin @ Sep 15th 2009 2:35PM
I have a 60GB launch PS3 and mine has been effed ever since I got 3.0. I couldnt get through a game of Madden without it freezing, so I returned it and got another copy hoping it was something with the disc. No luck. While waiting for Batman to arrive thru the mail, i decided to try and play some of my PS2 games and they worked fine. I got hooked again on MGS2, and played thru it with no issues. Then Batman came and I held my breath. The install went fine, but the game froze about 5 minutes in. I refrained from hitting the system with a sledgehammer, and proceeded to try and do a quick format, then full format, and a system restore and none of those worked. Now Batman wont even get thru the install. I am crossing my fingers that 3.01 will somehow fix this, but I'm not too hopeful. Has anyone else experienced something like this? It doesn't make sense that it could be the BD laser, as I have read online from some people, because my PS2 games still play fine.
Jonny @ Sep 15th 2009 4:01PM
Just because it can read DVD-based discs, don't rule out the laser.
Used to have problems with PS2s too, only reading one or the other type of disc.
Sony uses crappy lasers. Has been since PSone.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 15th 2009 4:28PM
When my 60GB optical unit went, it wouldn't see any disc. You could hear it wasn't even spinning them up.
Kevin @ Sep 16th 2009 9:25AM
No dice.... Updated to 3.01. Discs still wont load. Goodbye $600....
Jimbo @ Sep 15th 2009 2:35PM
Since 3.00 my pal australian pink floyd dvd doesnt play.
