I doubt Sony has any intentions of fixing it so non-OEM controllers will work again.

The white controllers are OEM... FYI.

As for the update in general, I'm going to wait, given past history with these small updates sometimes screwing up machines already working, I don't want mine to fall victim, in case there is an issue...

Interesting, thanks Chris. I do know the white controller I have is a different serial number, maybe that's why I've not had a problem with it. (Got mine from Play-Asia.)

non-OEM controllers work fine. It's knockoff controllers that don't work.

Also, note to people saying about the frequences causing the ps3 to stop media playback.

I'm not talking about it going into the browser or games. I kinda half expect it not to work there, but if you just go into the options screen or just quickly look at your friends stats the music will stop.

Yeah I didn't understand that either. The demo is available today for those who pre-ordered the game. So....

a)Why do you need to be playing Uncharted 1 right now?

b)Why in the world did you buy that ugly white controller in the first place?

Version 3.0 Firmware made alot of 60GB launch machines have the "red light of death" ... and there are PAGES of feedback on it under Sony's own website, but JoyStiq isn't even including or reporting on that? How about some attention to THAT matter? Broken joysticks are one thing... whole console being screwed up and Sony expecting people to pay $200 CDN to repair is CRAZY. They are culling the PS3 Launch editions because they know that most people won't fix, they will just downgrade to a slim...

IF YOU HAVE A FAILING 60GB LAUNCH VERSION ADD YOUR NAME TO THE LIST OF DEAD:

My 60gb ps3 is probably the finest piece of gaming hardware I've ever encountered. It withstands all of the messed up firmware updates Sony puts out, withstands my dusty room, and doesn't even flinch after a few hundred hours of gaming.

Sounds like you just got bad luck brah.

My 60gb did get the YLOD, but only after several hundreds of hours of gaming and movie watching and living in an un-insulated craphole of a rental that would turn into an oven inside on a hot day. That poor fan would be working in overdrive the instant I turn it on. Got it fixed, slapped a 500gb hardrive into it, moved to a place with attic insulation and (hopefully) won't have any issues with my baby again. But as long as Sony is willing to fix it I'll be sending it in. I LOVE that machine!!! 100% BC FTW!!!!

My 60GB already broke months ago. Trust me when I say it's almost certainly not the firmware, it's just that the 60GBs have problem. For starters, the optical drives just aren't very good.

Anyway, I played through Batman:Arkham Asylum in 3 sittings in two days on my 60GB PS3 with firmware 3.00 on it and had no crashes or glitches. So I have to declare that not only is Batman:AA not an inherent 60GB killer like ars.technica said it was, but that firmware 3.00 works fine on 60GBs at least in general.

It's not a controller issue. Sony blocked knock-off controllers, commonly sold on eBay as the real thing. They have no reason to reactivate them.

You know what is sad, McElroy is the one who should have picked up on that obvious fact. Apparently you, a random blogger, are more informed than this paid editor.

Why do Universities have Journalism degrees if institutions don't bother requiring them. I mean McElroy could work at Fox News and be treated like a god there. A Hitler god.

I agree with Jon and tmac... My 60gb is running just fine (actually running a 320gb in it), sure it has locked up a couple of times, but nothing switching off the back power switch didn't rectify.

cdn, sounds like you had bad luck mate.

there is "something" else to this tho... don't know if you read about the people having the problems, but just like the early firmware problem that bricked only certain machines there are far too many of us having the issue all at the same time; it's mathematically impossible that this a random failure thing... sooo many people are having the same issue at the same time... more than a co-incidence...

Well, considering i just bought a new PS3 Slim and had never played Uncharted before, i was a little upset when it stopped working. It consistently froze at the same spot no matter what steps i followed. Thankfully i can get back to playing now that i beat two games in the time it took them to fix it :(

Somewhere on the left of the XMB is an item to check for system updates. Pick it. It won't happen automatically, that's why it's an "optional update".

I have a 60GB launch PS3 and mine has been effed ever since I got 3.0. I couldnt get through a game of Madden without it freezing, so I returned it and got another copy hoping it was something with the disc. No luck. While waiting for Batman to arrive thru the mail, i decided to try and play some of my PS2 games and they worked fine. I got hooked again on MGS2, and played thru it with no issues. Then Batman came and I held my breath. The install went fine, but the game froze about 5 minutes in. I refrained from hitting the system with a sledgehammer, and proceeded to try and do a quick format, then full format, and a system restore and none of those worked. Now Batman wont even get thru the install. I am crossing my fingers that 3.01 will somehow fix this, but I'm not too hopeful. Has anyone else experienced something like this? It doesn't make sense that it could be the BD laser, as I have read online from some people, because my PS2 games still play fine.

Just because it can read DVD-based discs, don't rule out the laser.

Used to have problems with PS2s too, only reading one or the other type of disc.

Sony uses crappy lasers. Has been since PSone.
