This rushed sequel is just to kill the Tony Hawk franchise. Why else would you make an announcement like this a month before your biggest competitor?

Released in January. They better not make Skate a yearly thing, as that's what killed Tony Hawk in the first place.

Ummm Didnt skate 2 JUST come out a few months ago?? geeeeeeeeeeez...Are they trying to turn this into the Rock band/guitar hero/Madden/NBA Live/NBA 2K/MLB The Show by release it EVERY year?? its a FUCKING SKATING GAME!! Let it be for a few years until they can add something big enough to justify a new one....

I only can think of a few people online that have truly mastered Skate 2 because the sheer amount of tricks. I think this is more to deflate the Tony Hawk franchise all together. I really think if Tony Hawk doesn't do well with this latest game it'll be the final nail in the coffin for them and EA's trying make sure it doesn't by pushing out a sequel before it's time...

Skate 3 coming out in May is not too soon. For those that follow the franchise that is very far off. For those who don't follow the franchise and pick up the titles months after they come out via some resale method, who gives a shit? The title is supported by people that pick it up in the first month. EA doesn't care if you think it's too early, since you probably wouldn't buy it anyways if it was 3 years between releases.

I've destroyed skate, skate 2, and all the DLC. The learning curve is not that hard (since it's completely logical if you skate, or just think of how you manipulate the board). Skate 2 might have been rushed since a third of it was old spots touched up. It added enough tricks, modes, and spots to be worth the $60 too. This having a whole new city is awesome. I didn't care much for the hall of meat challenges though, I hope they don't keep tacking on wonky modes like that.

@ Chris D

Considering skate 2 came out in January of 2008, a year and half later for the sequel is not crazy. What innovation would they need 2+ years of development time? Natal support? A plastic skate board peripheral? I don't think so.

As far as justifying a sequel, there are a finite amount of skateboarding tricks so all they can do is add new areas to skate in, new tricks, custimization options, and improved graphics. It's based on a real sport so unless they start adding crazy shit that doesn't make sense then they are kind of limited. Do you want them to pull out and FPS skateboarding game or something?

@Odog4ever

Granted, Skate IS somewhat limited to actual skateboarding tricks, with the control scheme they have set-up, it is complicated to translate the actual trick into joystick movements, and not sloppy button mashing techniques like Tony Hawk. Its going to be interesting to see how you will perform darkslides and kicklfip underflips(or hospital flips for that matter), without making the controls hacked. Being a huge fan of this series, I hope they fix 3 from the horrible problems that plagued 2; like the outrageous walking mechanic, where you walked like a friggin gimp. I also hope they bring it back to its root, something about skate 2 doesnt give me the same feeling skate. did. I hope they keep the same pace they have, because i like how i cant 900 kickflip a 20 set of stairs.

However, i yearn for someone who can create a true-to-life FPS Skate game, and make it work.

I haven't even mastered Skate 2 yet just because the sheer amount of tricks you can do... Hopefully it's just Story Mode co-op with skate crews because adding so many more tricks will just make Skate 3 have a nearly impossible learning curve when it comes out....

Yeah, THPS2 had build a park. That's like saying Duke Nukem 3D's map editor was the same as CoD4's builder though. You're looking at 10 years of game progression in every other facet of the game. A park builder is just icing on the cake. Now you can recreate your local parks for rainy days =)

Yes I know 360's can steam theirs anytime over any game.

But COME ON EA! What about PS3 owners? Can't you do us the favor? If we ask Sony they're just going to say, "Oh well the PS3 CAN play music while you play games! Oh, but, um, its up to the developers"

Crap, my ignorance for the second time today kicks me in the balls. So sorry.

I skipped on Skate2 after being really put off by the character creation (demo). I yielded better results with the first one I felt. Before release I didn't find anything mentioned the ability to play music from the XMB so being a twat, I put it lower on my to-play list.

Fuck, looks like I know what I'm renting next.

I beat both 100% and I have to say that they both had their challenges that were hard, but in a "stupid" way. Each game had about 1 or 2 challenges that made you feel like you were just wasting your time trying to beat them because they were a) impossibly hard and b) just boring. I liked Skate more than Skate 2 because I felt like the first one captured the skateboarding scene better and the second one almost felt like it sold out and tried to be too extreme. 2 was still fun and enjoyable with things like the Murderhorn and the new X-Games park, but I definitely enjoyed Skate more. I feel like Skate 3 might be the nail in the coffin for the series for me

2 was much easier. Instead of having to land a specific trick into specific grind then do a specific flip trick out... They'll just give you "flip in, grind, flip out and score X points".

Only two missions really gave people trouble on Skate 2. G.I.R.L. and the alien manual.

@Neuromancer

Wikipedia sums up the confusion in four words:
"Skate (marketed as skate.) [...]"

It's not ".skate", it's "Skate" (with a capital "S" and no initial period). You're thinking of the logotype on the first game, which is "skate." (with the period at the end and the name rendered in all lowercase). In no event is ".skate" correct. It's not .hack after all.

The series (and the first game) are called "Skate", despite the style of the logotype (just like Call of Duty is not CALL OF DUTY just because the name is rendered in all-caps on the game box) Annoyingly, PlayStation 3 was officially to be rendered as PLAYSTATION 3 up until the rebranding with the release of the Slim... but I digress.

If you're going to be pedantic, at least be right. =)

Skateboarding seems fun, but flying from a avalanche seems more satisfying.

I guess I am one of the few who is really excited to see one of my favorite franchises come out sooner rather than later. Its only going to have been a year and a half! Hell, I'd buy a new skate game every October just like Hawk back in the day.

It was not releasing every year that killed the Hawk series; it was the direction they took their game. And that direction happened to be straight off a cliff when they started including things like jackass etc.

I'm really excited to hear this news. It made my morning.

Honestly, I've been dying for Skate 3. Glad they're going somewhere new, and super glad that they've added dark slides to the trick bag. Wonder what else will be added.

Amen to that. Every time you play Hall of Meat (easily the greatest mode ever implemented in a skateboarding game), you have to go on faith that someone won't be a complete d-bag and exploit that glitch.

Personally, I love when they try to do it, and end up failing in the process.

Skate 3 > Tony Hawk Ride

And I agree. I think this sequel is a little unwarranted so soon. Skate as already proven it's a far superior skateboarding game when compared to the most recent entries in the Tony Hawk series. There's no reason to rush a sequel for the fear that Ride will actually be a competitor (lol).

EA is the new Activision is the new EA.

Either way, I've never played either of the previous Skate games (and hear that they're quite good) so as long as this comes out in a dry patch I'll probably pick it up. You'd think they'd wait for Natal though.

Natal would ruin this... The whole base of skate is the control scheme. If you're going to throw out the foundation of the game, you might as well make a new game.

Here's hoping they bring the gameplay back up to par with the original Skate.

IMO Skate 2 was abysmal, it felt like they added so much (which is great) that the underlying quality of the gameplay, and the tight animations from the first game were lost

Excited to see if they can bring the greatness of the original back

Man, I wish they would improve on the skaters' styles and make it vary between the different skaters. It kind of sucks that the third Skate is coming out and everyone still has the same exact trick animations. Also, you better be able to land any grab in any grind because I was so disappointed not to be able to do crail slides and crunt slides in Skate 2.

i'm an rpg nut so excuse this comment but i really wanted the single player campaign to be more about learning the tricks and getting better at them. have animation sets for how skilled your skater is. as you progressed through the campaign, you could easily land the tricks you repeatedly abused. it seemed weird to me that the skater could go out and do any trick available from the start. yeah, rpg... maybe?
