The IEEE recently standardized the 802.11n WiFi protocol, which has unofficially been appearing in consumer electronics products for over two years now. It seems that Microsoft is planning on keeping up with the times, as the Federal Communications Commission recently evaluated an "Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter" that adheres to the new WLAN standard. Using said protocol, this new adapter should afford users double the transfer speed they had using their previous dongles, and will also provide a massive boost in connection range to WiFi hotspots.
Of course, none of this matters if the thing costs $200 -- an estimate we arrived at using the "double the antennas, double the price" principle. We've contacted Microsoft for comment on the new hardware's due date and price point, and to find out if the new model effectively means we'll never, ever, ever see built-in WiFi for the 360.

No it doesn't but it does have Wireless Built-n...as does the Zune, Wii, PSP, DS, and other things that are the same price or cheaper than the 360...

Then go play them chris and stop talking shit...
The 360 came out years before the ps3...that's why it didn't have built in wifi.
Would it be nice to have it built in? YES
Will Microsoft ever do that with the 360? Possibly...but my guess is NO.
They're gonna wait to the next generation of consoles and definitely do it then.
Until then we're stuck with the adapter or long ethernet cords...DEAL WITH IT. Stop bitching and move on.
I Love My 360 Elite!

@TheCeruleanKnight007 YEARS?? it was only ONE year... Funny how you 360 fanboys like you say the fact that it came out a YEAR earlier than the PS3 doesnt matter as far as that 9 million unit gap, but now it DOES as far as Wifi?? GTFO!!! The PSP & DS Came out in 2004..and thats BEFORE the 360...they BOTH have Wifi....
Fact is I bought an "Elite" 360 paying more for it than I did my PS3 and THEN had to spend $50 for a Wireless adapter.....
MS said "Wifi is useless for gaming", then said "we give people the option as to whether or not they need that or not" much like they said "HDMI isn't a big feature, and as such we don't think its necessary" then a bit later they release it but ONLY in a $480 Elite....then it trickled down to the other systems...fact is the shit should be in there...PERIOD

Unless your consoles is just way too far away from your router, I would suggest just going ahead and running an ethernet cable regardless of whether or not you have wireless available.
I'm going to take a wild guess here that more PS3 users using wireless the reason we see so many complaints about PS3 updates and PSN downloads taking so ungodly long compared to 360 downloads of the same size, when really there should be no difference.
Also, any kind of self respecting online gamer is never going to dream of going wireless anyway. With as much as lag affects modern games, and with as many things as there are out there to screw up your connection, why add something else to the mix that is likely to make things even worse?

I love my PS3 2, its a great blu ray player... wait a min.. It's a game console?
That's right because I can actually stream all my video files from my server to the xbox (either net wi-fi bridge) and it can actually play them ALL. Even without transcode. huh.
Not that the PS3 and it's limited broadcast streams of avi files isn't fun or anything... Go stream some movies from your media server to your ps3 then to an xbox 360 and tell me which is the better media platform.... But hey the PS3 has wifi.... (hard drive option is sweet tho)
But hey don't worry I'm sure there will be plenty of youtube videos for all the games you guys cannot play, and even watch ones you guys do have on multi platform with bad/weak ports or even old games just releasing 1 year behind from other consoles.
Or even worse case enjoy your *hehe texting with friends and tin cans on a string sound quality (granted the sony mic is better but most don't use it.) and surfing the web on a junk browser that supports almost nothing on the web.
Do not hate because you wasted your money on the wrong investment. Hate because Sony is greedy and not opening the doors to what the system could be.

I have to say, I don't have interest in consoles currently, I am a PC gamer at least until the next console generation.
But the PS3 does impress me on a technical level, with the fat PS3 being just slightly larger than the 360 and yet having the hard drive flush with the chassis rather than sticking out on the 360, built in Wi-Fi, built in power adapter (I would have thought it would be external in the slim but they still managed to make it internal). And look how small the slim PS3 is compared to the 360 and how they still managed to fit that all in.

Actually, lag is not that much of an issue. At least it hasn't been for me, I've been able to play Wipeout HD online through wireless and haven't seen much lag at all.
Also, thank you Chris for pointing out that coming out one year early is no excuse for not having built-in wifi.

Oh. Wifi would also be really nice not for gaming, but just for connecting to Xbox live. Since MS made the BRILLIANT decision to make Xbl arcade and DLC not work if you aren't connected to Live after having your console replaced, it is a *pain in the ass* when I take my Xbox to my friend's house, who doesn't have an internet connection anywhere close to the TV. We miss out on playing Castle Crashers, and all the Rock Band DLC I have, or we have to run a long-ass cable through the house.
Yea thanks MS for giving us the "option" to do that.

@Vcize I havent had any problems with playing online wirelessly...only problem I ever had was when streaming Video...on both the PS3 and 360.....
@bulletsmakepeace Ummm the PS3 Upconverts streaming video MUCH better than the 360....trying to diss the fact that the PS3 only NATIVELY plays avi and divx is point considering even WITH Media Center it cant play Divx....fact is I STILL have to use TVersity to play stuff simply because the Media Center extender capabilities are useless if you use codecs.....

Lag experienced in gaming has little to do with wether your wireless or wired. It has a lot to do with correct Router settings and the conection speed of your ISP. The diference that I currently experience between my wired and wireless connections is less than a 100kb down and less than 50kb up loosing even a mb down speed when your running at over 10mb down has no effect on gaming lag. If you are experiencing lag in gaming check with your ISP cause It is most likly due to your upload speed and not your download speed. You only need about 5mb down to experience lag free gaming but you want to make sure your upload speed isn't restricted. even if you had 50mb down if your upload speed was only at 0.5mb then you would still experience lag.

Where do you get all of your data. I don't even use my xbox for streaming since I got my PS3. I find that the PS3 actually reads MORE of my media files than my xbox and it recognizes my network without any setup. With my xbox I constantly had to be restarting Tversity and refreshing files in order to get anything to play now I am just using Windows 7 to stream everything to my PS3 and I can even Copy over files to store on the harddrrive locally. I think that the xbox is fine for a media server as long as you are using windows media center. But I find Windows Media center to be highly restrictive and I like a system that hasn't had pointless constraints put inplace. The ability to read my Terabite external drive and copy files on to the hard drive alone make the PS3 a better media center.

Way to do your research bro, yes your live arcade games won't work when you get your 360 replaced, but that's because they are associated with your old 360.
Now if you had bothered to spend 5 minutes looking up how to make it work you would know there is a fix you can do through xbox.com that allows you to re-associate any downloaded content on live to a new 360 once a year.
I suggest you check it out.

use the content transfer tool on xbox.com. that will solve your issues with content not working when not connected to the internet.

Sigh...hope both of you are magically proven right and it costs even less than the retail price of their current adapter, but those hopes aren't too high.

Maybe, but probably likely that MSFT will carry both for a while, putting the N adapter at $100 and dropping the price of the regular adapter down to $40-$60.

There's no justification for making less of a profit on the new wi-fi adapter
So long as people are still stupid enough to pay $10 for a USB cable (Protip: Cablewholesale) or $70 for a USB wi-fi adapter at Radio Shack, they'll pay $100 for a special wi-fi adapter for the 360 or $100 for a special backwards-compatibility adapter for the PS2 (hint: it is a PS2)

Well Wireless N JUST got official a few days ago....Too bad they didn't build Draft N into the PS3 tho...maybe they will start to next year
I'm kind of tempted to get this but the one I already have doesn't work bad at all...and like you guys said its going to be costly...although I have to say $200 would be outrageous even for MS...

Umm, the wireless N standard didn't come into existence until 2007. The PS3 and Wii were launched in 2006. There's really no way for Sony to have been able to capitalize on the N standard prior to that. What Sony might be able to do is upgrade the Slim to wireless N standards. It'll probably piss off some folks and maybe add another firmware-related nightmare but it's definitely a step forward for people who want to enjoy their wireless at ludicrous speeds.

They could and I don't know why they didn't. The last time I checked on wireless N routers was two months ago at Frys and from what I remember, those routers were overpriced. It might be that the wireless N technology is expensive, who knows. Then again, I live in a house where wireless G reaches my neighbor's house, about 4 houses away from me.

oh nah they not that expensive anymore...I mean you can get a wireless N router for just $30 at walmart now....I got a D-Link Gaming Wireless-N router like 2 years ago...it cost $100 then...now that its finalized I'm going to buy an official one...

Hopefully not a ridiculous sum of money. I honestly think the Wifi adapter is the most overpriced hardware made by Microsoft- ever. I remember paying 400$ for the original 20Gb SKU and then having to go out and pay another 100$ for the wifi adapter. And THEN that one broke, and I had to get another for 100$. But, I eventually fixed the first one.
