In about 20 years, anyone who knows what this word means will be dead.

Do we really need to be worried about this? I still don't know what "sambo" means.

In 20 years people will still know sambo is racist. Why?

Because in 15 years, somebody will accidentally mispell "Rambo" and then omebody will climb on their high horse and remind us all that it was a dirty word.

The subsequent press coverage will teach the young generation a brand new racist term, and the cycle will be renewed.

It's a Harpoon gun. You just don't know your weapons.

You can't shoot spears.

You can shoot arrows, you can shoot harpoons.

You throw spears.

I guess I was one of the few Joystiqers to shout "OH SHIT" when I read the headline and saw the watermelon. My mom read the story of Little Black Sambo to me all the time as a bedtime story because it was one of her favorite stories when she was little. She is a schoolteacher, and she's still a little pissed that her school district banned the book several years ago. I don't think that the story is racist at all, but I know that the word sambo has racist connotations, such as injun, or darkie.

Also of note, there is a restaurant in Santa Barbara called Sambo's. It is an old timey diner that was made in the 50's, and it has illustrations of the book all along its' walls. Even in PC Southern California, the restaurant's theme and illustrations are allowed to remain.

I guess I'm just lucky that I'm well aware of the word sambo?

It's a good thing most of us were unaware of the historic meaning of the word. Words only have meanings that we apply to them. The best way to defang a word is to stop defining it negatively. Sambo, until today, was just a random sound that most people here had no idea what the meaning was. It sounds like a dance or martial artfor those who aren't old and fossilized enough to have a first hand account of what it used to mean. Good job, race baiters, you expanded the vocabulary of bigotry to a new generations. Bigots aren't smart folk, they'll lose their ability to vocalize it in a few generations.

Words are just sounds, they only mean what the listener choses it to mean. Be thankful few know what sambo meant and that those who used it used an accepti le definition. Just hold your tongue, your world view isn't the same as everyone else. It could be (and almost always is) a misunderstanding on YOUR part.

Don't be that lady that sued a public school for putting niggardly on a spelling test.

Also, its a martial art.

Though I don't believe this use was racist & find it more funny than anything, Sambo is term that is very well known to affluent African Americans. I knew it well before I went to college but we discussed the term alot.

Zamboni is a registered trademark, and moonwalk is not a physical noun, it is either a type of dance or a verb. You might as well try 'run' or 'tango'.

In my Spanish classes, I hear the teachers use the word "negro" all the time. Now if you completely ignore the fact that "negro" is the Spanish word for the color black, it's clear-cut evidence that all Spanish teachers are obviously racist pigs, and we should stop teaching Spanish in schools.

Back on topic, I was aware that "sambo" was a racial slur. I'm also aware that it isn't very well known. A lot of times - especially lately - there are allegations of racism where none were intended (the arrest of the Cambridge professor comes to mind). People are too quick to play the "race" card just to inflame or aggravate a situation, and as a result, allegations of "racist" are becoming pretty much meaningless (e.g. calling someone a "racist" simply because they disagree with one of Obama's policies).

I think the explanations by the game makers is valid. No racial implications were intended by having this unfortunate connection. Chalk it up to a "game glitch," as it were, and not a sign of malicious intent on 5th Cell's part.

Bullshit to the tenth degree. There's very few other Spanish nouns in Scribblenauts, and they're all very commonly used in America. Why the hell would there randomly be something that obscure in the game? Not to mention a word that is almost NEVER used in the language the game is published in.

This is a racist move that they're pathetically trying to cover up, and a ton of idiots are trying to defend. I don't think there should be any punishment, but for the love of god, this was very obviously added by some racist staff member on purpose. You'd have to be remarkably stupid to believe the team coming up with the words wouldn't catch something that obvious, and even stupider to believe that such an obscure Spanish noun would make it into the game in the first place.

OMG! It's religious too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanesca
"It is a rich soup, with the primary ingredients being figleaf gourd (sambo), pumpkin (zapallo), fava beans and twelve different kinds of grains (chochos, abas, lentils, peas, corn and other) representing the disciples of Jesus, and salt cod, cooked in milk, due to the Christian religious prohibition against red meat during Holy Week (the week before Easter)."

Funny thing that Google:
http://images.google.com/images?q=figleaf%20gourd

BTW -- some claim Sambo is a Russian martial art:

Pffah~ Shame on those people fussing over this. I have no doubt in my mind that it was a misunderstanding! They're just looking for something in this lovely little game to pick at. Since there is actually another meaning for it the arguments fail. Yes, I'm black. Yes, I know about it. But, an accident is an accident.

I am thoroughly angry with the fussers... but I'm also a bit disappointed that it was posted here. Guess it's just me but I wouldn't have even put it up 'cos of how stupid it is. Plus, now everyone gets to fuss about racism. Hooray.

There is a lot of references to several "local" food items for many countries in the game. As an example, if you write alfajor or choripan (a candy and a sandwich) you get images of those traditional Argentina meals (alfajor exists in many countries, but the image depicts the Argentine one).
