@zochmenos

I HAVE read Darwin. Evolution is not inevitable. If a store wont CHOOSE to get with the times, it will get closed up. A store is not a living organism that adapts itself. Its run by human beings, which make lots and lots of illogical mistakes.

And about that... maybe I was referring to big stores like Wal-Mart, and Best Buy... I hadnt thought about small business. Well I hope Sony comes out with an awesome plan for this one.

Still hasnt come out with a plan for people that own tons of UMDs. Luckily I sold the 20 UMDs I owned a while ago.

I mean, I wouldnt mind buying Jeanne D“arc or Final Fantasy Tactics again. But I would NEVER pay more than 10-15 bucks at the most for them.

It's really interesting to watch this battle for control. Manufacturers and publishers favor the digital-only model, preventing second-hand sales and wrecking distributor's ability to sometimes get price-competitive, distributors hate it because it takes away their ability to sell more profitable things, and no-one bothers to ask what the consumer wants

They don't need to ask what we want. We vote with our wallets. Right now we've got options and there's a market for both distribution methods, so our "wants" are covered. The future isn't going to be determined by how Sony or anybody else prefers to sell their content. It's going to be determined by how we prefer to buy it.

The only logical way to go with this is to sell the games cheaper on psn. I would really deeply hate sony for selling games for the same 35-40 bucks on psn.

While digital distribution is convenient its definitely not pro-consumer.

Though, refusing to sell a product is definitely not pro-consumer either.

Companies don't exist to be pro-consumer - that would be charity. Companies exist to make money. They will be pro-consumer whenever being pro-consumer brings in money.

But who can blame them?

Hey...can't say I know anything about the local area over there...but thought it'd be worth mentioning that, at least from what I read here, they didn't say "largest retailer." They actually said "largest specialized retailer."

Oh yes, big difference.

This is a good idea on their part, besides I hate everything $ony, download only games should be kept to a small market and not have a full system for them. If the DSi had only download able games I'd be calling for a boycott for it as well but Nintendo probably wouldn't do something so fucking stupid.

This may be a lot bigger news than it seems, if spread to more global retailer's example,Walmart & Bestbuy. This is a big "IF" tho, see as they would like to keep a business relationships with Sony, seeing as the Sony corporation makes a lot more video game consoles.]

So confused... don't know who to cheer for...

Do I side with the retail chain, struggling to protect its profits from the march of technology by unfairly boycotting products that don't allow them to sell more stuff?

Or do I side with the megalomaniacal electronics giant that thinks that selling a downgraded PSP for an increased price is good business?

I may be a little off, but I remember someone at Sony coming out and saying (and I'm paraphrasing here) "This is new product, and therefore we can price it however we like."

I support all retailers that wish to boycott the PSP GO because of both cost and lack of games, and I myself wont be purchasing one until it drops at least $50.

hahaha. someone is calling sony out on its move. the margin on the hardware is so low for the retailer and yet sony gets full benefits of selling the software and trying to cut out the legs of the retailer. microsoft wants to do the same but they don't want to bite the hands that feed it. if the retailer can't make a profit from selling the software, then what's the point of selling the hardware for near nothing. this is the problem with selling software online. microsoft and sony get to keep the bulk of the profits and all the middle men (the B&M stores) lose out. selling online is a huge boon for MS, sony because you don't have to pay for packaging. you don't have to pay middlemen. all you pay for is bandwidth.

If specialty game stores are to continue to exist they need to find a replacement for the profits they are going to lose from selling digital download only systems.

My first guess is bandwith, by offering much better download speeds than people can get at their homes you'd pull lots of foot traffic into the store and upsell them on accessories, magazines and services (those Go batteries can't be easily exchanged).

Just my 2 cents.

I think this stance is fair. After all, there's almost NO margin on game consoles. Retailers make less if they sell a PSP Go than if they sell a USB cable. Why waste the shelf space, sales time, and stocking labor when they're not going to sell any software with it?

Of course, it won't mean much. Big retailers won't turn it down because- well- this is Sony. If Best Buy wants Sony TVs, computers, and other products, they'll stock the PSP Go and like it.
