I think this is a pretty brilliant strategy by Nintendo. I may not be the biggest fan of their stuff right now, but their business savvy is undeniable.

Nintendo must have some stupid owners in Europe to throw that kind of money at such a tiny problem.

That's the thing, what money? The VC games don't have any associated development costs (at least not anything significant). They can afford to give them away. I'm sure they have to pay some money to the 3rd parties for giving away their games, but you have to hit Platinum status first. And at that point you've gotten at least 20 new potential customs online for Nintendo. Plus think of all the people that will attempt to reach these levels and fail. All these people will get a few customers signed up and Nintendo won't owe them anything.

Whoever the person is that gets connected online for the first time will stumble on the marketplace and most likely will put money back into Nintendo's pockets.

Their not loosing money, most likely their going to gain money in this scenario...

They probably only need a small percentage of the people who get 'helped' to buy something in order to make it worth it.

You have no fucking clue how business works. Revenue is revenue. In fact, VC is the Wii's largest revenue stream.

It's lost money. Plain and simple.

@koehler83

Actually, you don't understand. When they cost/profit margin is practically 10000%, you can give away stuff if it encourages sales. The type of people who would pursue this have probably already bought most of the VC games they're interested in purchasing. New non-techie customers probably have no understanding of emulators or how overpriced VC games are. It's like free samples at the supermarket - I wouldn't call that "lost money".

Why the big push to make people go online? I dont see that how helps nintendo enough for them to give away all their games. They must have to pay the third party companies every time you download a free game. What do they get for getting someone online?

Because it's amazing how many people don't know what their Wii can do. When I worked at Best Buy (and even now doing what I do here at Hopkins), I always tell people "Did you know the Wii plays Gamecube games?" "Did you know you can go online with the Wii?" "Did you know you can download old NES, Super Nintendo, N64, etc. games right to it?" And the answer to all of them is always a surprised "No!".

Nintendo just wants people to use their machine to it's full potential that's all.

Okay...this is really getting on my nerves. This is a wonderful program and all..but why is Europe getting EVERYTHING and those of us in North America are left out? Well lets see...Smash Bros. 64 on VC still hasn't reached NA, all these releases like Mario Kart were announced for Europe..and there was no word for a NA release until later. The "Today and Tomorrow Channel" comes out in Japan..then Europe...and no US release date announced or is in sight? North America and Europe should all get this stuff on the same day or within a close time. It's a blatant favoritism, and I don't think its right.

"North America and Europe should all get this stuff on the same day or within a close time. It's a blatant favoritism, and I don't think its right."

That kind of enlightened attitude would have been fucking sweet back in the day when Europe got firmly fucked in the ass by pretty much every company under the sun. Translations, PAL conversions etc.

If it makes you feel better we'll be playing the majority of those VC games in the inferior PAL format because Nintendo can't be arsed updating them (or simply offering NTSC versions which everyone has been able to play on pretty much any television for the last 15 years).

The truth though is that while Nintendo likes all the fancy marketing babble (blue ocean LOL) nobody ever seems to have brought up 'global market' at a board meeting yet. The Japanese, NA and Euro divisions all seem to actively ignore each other and do whatever the hell they please. It is absurd that Europe and North America are treated as such vastly different markets when it comes to a purely online market, Though In fairness Sony still hasn't gotten this right but Microsoft has nailed it this gen (and is also much better at retail, ODST is getting a simultaneous release in Europe and NA).

Bottom line, Nintendo still sucks :)

I could be wrong, but I think NCL is in direct control of NOE, whereas NOA has a reasonable amount of autonomy. That would also likely explain why Europe gets games from Nintendo like Tingle's Rosie Rupeeland and Another Code R.

Given how far NOA has it's head up it's ass, Europe getting better treatment from Nintendo isn't too surprising.

SterlingSpring: a big fat fuck you to you. You yanks don't get to complain about anything that Europe gets first. Did you know we never got ANY final fantasy game until 7? FFX we got only after the US already had the greatest hits rerelease. We never even got Chrono Trigger, or Earthbound. No Super Mario RPG. No Chrono Cross. No Xenogears, no Xenosaga, no Katamari Damacy.

Just a few examples out of numerous games that we apparently weren't a good market for. And the ones that we did get, we -always- got later, often a year or more. Only fairly recently, in the last few years, have we begun to see -*gasp*- releases at the same time as the US, or even before. I remember when we got Zelda the Minish Cap first I was all "OH MY GOOOOOOD" like some starved third world child that got to eat a ham sandwich.

Maybe now someone can set up my Wii to go online again. I got that new router... Which broke my Wii connection but made my Xbox Live connection work (ironic?).
Not that I used the Wii connection for anything but Homebrew Channel updates and the Homebrew Browser, but it annoys me to see things not working! Specially when it worked before...

Wow, sounds like a sweet deal.

A couple of questions come to mind though. Let's say you know someone who has a Wii, but for whatever reason they cannot connect on-line at their house. Can they bring their Wii to your house and connect on-line that way (and still count it towards your 10/20 person goal?).
Also, does this unlimited access apply only to current VC games, or does it also include all future games. If it's only current games, than it would actually almost be better if we had to wait for this promotion to come to NOA, thus allowing for more possible downloads.

I hope this deal does come over here, because I can already think of 3 or 4 people that I know that have a Wii who most likely aren't connected.

It goes by Wii System Number, i think. So the connection could be made anywhere, and hell, you could get credited for doing what tcc3 up there suggested: buy 20 of them, register them, then privately sell them

I wish they could have offered this, say, a good 18-24 months ago. Of the five or or six or seven of my friends that had a Wii, I and another are the only ones that still have our consoles. Everyone else succumbed to the temptation of Ebay.

This is an awesome idea, though. I guess I have to find some new friends.
