Interplay bringing ClayFighter to WiiWare and DSiWare
Of all the classic franchises we expected to be resurrected, ClayFighter was right up there with Aero the Acrobat. But we suppose there's room for everyone at the table, as Interplay has announced that they'll be bringing the bulbous brawler to WiiWare and DSiWare. Crafted by some of the team behind the original game (now operating under the name StudioBlack Games), the updates will sport revamped graphics and gameplay.
It's due in summer of 2010, so hopefully you have plenty of time to recommit Ickybod Clay's move set to memory.

This game is junk

Yes, I hate it!
When you beat the game, it gives you the code to unlock Boogerman... & it's wrong!!!!
Thank god for GamePro, even if it was a month after release.
Honestly, How did that make it into the final version?!?!
At age 13, I even wrote Interplay a letter of disappointment.
CarpeD1em500 @ Sep 16th 2009 8:37AM
Joystiq.
While I'm awake at some annoying hour getting ready to take classes, then go to my job, and then my career fair later today (senior at unc), I just wanted to say thanks for posting this picture and reminding me of a time when things were much, much simpler in life.
*sigh*
Now if only someone would port Blast Corps to the XBLA.
Vaitork @ Sep 16th 2009 8:54AM
Yeah, I don't remember saying any game was good or bad back then. We didn't care as long as we got games to play.
As a matter of fact, games with horrible gameplay and bad controls were often marked as "too hard". Somehow you were the one not being good enough. Made me play too many extra hours getting it right. Good times.
Filthy Assistant @ Sep 16th 2009 6:12PM
I just really hope they don't rape the franchise like that Wii Ready 2 Rumble.
Nipah @ Sep 16th 2009 11:12PM
Someone needs to remake/rerelease Uniracer...
That game was way too much fun.
Balloonfighter99 @ Sep 16th 2009 8:38AM
"I'm bad I'm cool ,I'm no ones fool." I think thats what Bad Mr. Frosty said, the audio was a little muffled in those days.
Cluck you.
koehler83 @ Sep 16th 2009 8:40AM
Gotta pay those legal bills somehow.
Lukeyo @ Sep 16th 2009 11:12AM
This is exactly what I was thinking. Took too long to start development on Fallout MMO. Bethesda sues for contract breach. What do we do? Load up the virtual console with IP's! Go go!
Lukeyo @ Sep 16th 2009 11:14AM
My mistake, I guess I was in such a hurry to comment that I didn't read the article. Replace Virtual Console with Wii Ware.

I really liked this game, back when I was a kid. Not sure if I'll like it now, might actually buy a Dsi, if any good retail games come out for it, this would be a good "side game"
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 16th 2009 8:44AM
I hope it plays more like Street Fighter this time around and less like a clunkier Mortal Kombat.
Also, I hope they made a typo and meant to say Primal Rage.
Gnoll @ Sep 16th 2009 8:53AM
Me and my brother rented the SNES version many times a kid. Good memories.
Vaitork @ Sep 16th 2009 8:56AM
Dude, I liked Aero :( it was hard as fuck, but it wasn't too bad either. I remember renting it a few times.
Surlent @ Sep 16th 2009 1:32PM
I still play Aero once in a while. One of the best platformers on the SNES.
Maulok @ Sep 16th 2009 9:05AM
I have fond memories of this series that I'm 100% certain would be ruined by actually replaying it.
It could work great with current gen graphics as a Smash Bros style wacky 4 player fighter.

I remember the N64 release, and this game being flaunted as the premier fighter.
Five years later, the N64 died with about five fighting games to its name.
Yeah, this series deserves a second chance, right up there with Army Men.
Mr Khan @ Sep 16th 2009 10:01AM
Fighters and RPGs, those were the two genres that just never took off on N64
Really, there's been a dearth of fighting games on Nintendo home consoles since then, though that's turning around somewhat with Wii
Lukeyo @ Sep 16th 2009 11:17AM
I agree with the lack of fighting games on Nintendo consoles. At the same time, I remember the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II being the best as well as the best selling. Everybody goes ape shit for a Link cameo.
M @ Sep 16th 2009 5:42PM
One of those five was Killer Instinct Gold.
This makes the fact that the N64 had 5 fighting games ok.
Nook @ Sep 16th 2009 9:16AM
I don't recall playing this one, sure I did though. I hope it has aged better than the SNES clay fighter - talk about noticing the choppy frame rate nowadays.
I do not think this bested KI64 though.
Demon G Sides @ Sep 16th 2009 9:21AM
Love you ClayFighter. You never hurt me, not with Icky Bod's instant kill combo's. You were so good to me :D
Shimrra @ Sep 16th 2009 9:33AM
WHY???
Both games had horrible control damn I remember and the graphics granted the second looked better doesnt mean its plays better.
There are so many other great classic games out there that should be ported over why this one??
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Sep 16th 2009 9:42AM
Whatever the graphics update is, I hope they're CLAY graphics and not sprites or polys.
NoughtSoClever @ Sep 16th 2009 10:00AM
I think pictures of clay models would still be considered sprites. But they did use real clay models to animate all 3 games.
captainprotonx @ Sep 16th 2009 10:11AM
How about a coupon for Play-Doh?
I think that would be more fun than any clayfighter remake.
hotrider12 @ Sep 16th 2009 9:48AM
why cant CLAYFIGHTER be on ps3??? why do all classic games need to be wiiware or on xblive??? CLAYFIGHTER would look sweet as hell on ps3
gayboyDS @ Sep 16th 2009 9:51AM
I'd like to see a new Clayfighter game, but what we really need is a Robot Chicken game!!!!
Lukeyo @ Sep 16th 2009 11:21AM
The Phyllis Diller sprinkler should be a boss in said game. I'd buy it.
randy5554 @ Sep 16th 2009 9:52AM
I forgot how awesome a name Clayfighters 63 1/3 is.
MystileArmor @ Sep 16th 2009 9:53AM
I owned this game when I was a kid. I remember seeing the box and being like "!?"
Then I played it and I have to say I liked it. It was one of the first games I recall with a bit of a 3D element added to the 2D fighting.
Sure, the gameplay was a bit wonky, but the absurd characters and the tacky catchphrases made up for it.
And how can you go wrong with Earthworm Jim in clay-mation combat?
I had some good times playing this as a kid. Isn't that the reason we play games in the first place?
gayboyDS @ Sep 16th 2009 11:57AM

I remember playing as the Blob- soooo cheap. And so much fun to turn into a jackhammer and really pound the enemy. :)
GET READY TO CRUUUUMMMMMBLLLLEEEE!!!!!
:P
Stormsurge @ Sep 16th 2009 9:59AM
This was my favorite game as a kid. I had Clayfighter, Clayfighter: TE, Clayfighter 2: Judgement Clay, and Clayfighter 63 1/3. I was pissed off, though, that they made a special edition version of 63 1/3 for blockbuster that essentially fixed all of the bugs and added a ton more characters and moves. Maybe this WiiWare version can bring the joy back to playing fighting games for me.
captainprotonx @ Sep 16th 2009 10:12AM
So YOU'RE the dude that kept this series going.
The Aquacharger (PSN:Elvenmonk) @ Sep 16th 2009 10:31AM
That pissed me off too, plus I never found a copy of Clay Fighter 63 1/3.
Yan @ Sep 16th 2009 10:23AM
I expect the remaining 2/3s that Interplay left out of the original.

Bad (emphasis on the) Mr. Frosty!
*Blows dust of Nintendo Wii*.
Roddie @ Sep 16th 2009 11:04AM
I remember when this was the benchmark for bad games.
ecco6t9 @ Sep 16th 2009 11:27AM
Remember don't buy the first version wait a year andbuy the non buggy edition.
Mayne @ Sep 16th 2009 11:54AM
Ugh. This game was essentially a huge disappointment for me. The character premises were quirky and entertaining, but the presentation was just majorly lacking.
I really liked the sequel on SNES. I was hoping for more of an improved iteration of that. Instead we just got, as samfish said, a "clunkier Mortal Kombat."
And the camera *trying * to rotate around the action... ugh... That looked horrible. Doesn't really work to have a 3D, roaming camera when the characters themselves (i.e. the focus of the action) literally have no depth. That was way too distracting.
Boogerman and Earthworm Jim were chuckle-worthy inclusions, but I specifically remember Jim being one of the worst-playable characters in the game.
Not that I'd have access to it anyway, but I'll pass on any kind of "revamp."
Batzarro @ Sep 16th 2009 12:31PM
Boo-hooken!
Oh, cannonballs! It's only for Wii. I would have loved to play this online in XBLA.
Still, I'm looking at the off chance to get a DS, so it might be in the cards for me.
Cerpin Taxt @ Sep 16th 2009 12:54PM
HOLY SHIT. I read the article and thought that they were just bringing the Clayfighter games to the virtual console...but there's a NEW Clayfighter game!?!?!?
I love the world today!
Maxx the Slash @ Sep 16th 2009 1:42PM
I hope it's ClayFighter 63 1/3rd, redesigned and including HoboCop who was removed because he was deemed too offensive.
