A look at Blizzard's canceled squad-based sci-fi RPG: Nomad

Some of the trivia was actually pretty interesting, like the fact that when Blizzard releases a patch, almost half of that data is audio. Pearce also mentioned that BlizzCon is operated "at a substantial loss for Blizzard," but the value is that it's a huge marketing/PR opportunity for them. Considering how many tickets they sell (in only eight minutes), that's around $3.5 million that's written off. Plus whatever Blizzard spends above and beyond that. No wonder Blizzard employees have to buy their own tickets.
However, the most interesting part of the keynote was when they briefly spoke about Nomad, the canceled squad-based sci-fi game. Ten years ago, Blizzard put a lot of work in on the game, but eventually looked at it and said "Is this really the game we want to be working on right now? The answer ended up being "no," and the team went on to start work on World of Warcraft. Here we are ten years later with WoW going strong, and no Nomad in sight.
They'd mentioned this canceled game, along with a slew of others, at last year's DICE summit, but without any other information. Sadly, the only thing they had to show were pieces of concept art, including some by "The Bourbon Cowboy," Chris Metzen. The art itself isn't that exciting (the best one is above and there's a couple more in the gallery below), but the words "squad-based sci-fi RPG" are exciting. Could this be Blizzard's next game? Possibly mutated into MMO form? Who knows when we'll find out, since one of the stats they flashed onscreen this morning was "Number of Unannounced MMOs: 1."

Never played WoW, won't, & never will. However their other games (Starcraft 2 & Diablo 3) look quite tasty.
Husher @ Sep 17th 2009 5:22PM
that... had nothen to do with what this article was talking about. however it is a super dooper fun fact about nintendo junkie

The more you know! ...and knowing is half the battle!
You know, it's good to know that opinions are like @ssholes...especially around here...everyone has one but no one wants to know about it if it isn't their own.
HippoHero @ Sep 17th 2009 5:36PM
Really NintendoJunkie? That's not insightful and is barely related. I venture in here for insightful observations like "This picture has given me a boner" or "I am fapping to this right now".
Step it up.
NintendoJunkie @ Sep 17th 2009 5:43PM
I am truly sorry for your lots!
HippoHero @ Sep 17th 2009 5:50PM
Apology accepted only on the condition you mention how horny the picture has made you.
NintendoJunkie @ Sep 17th 2009 5:53PM
That is exactly why it is my lifelong goal to find the Lochness monster...or that rumored Pterodactyl that is flying around in the remote jungles of Africa.
Discotheque @ Sep 17th 2009 4:29PM
Well it's safe to say they made the right and much more profitable decision in the end. But still I hope this idea isn't scrapped. I'm not a fan of "squad-based" anything, but a new Blizzard IP is always exciting news considering it's rare. I hope they look into making this game in the future.
Husher @ Sep 17th 2009 5:25PM
Now that they are with Activision, I wonder if they are gonna raid the idea drawer of blizzard.
Miku @ Sep 17th 2009 4:31PM
You mean we could have had tank-carrying brontosaurus but we ended up with WoW?
I feel distinctly ripped off.
NintendoJunkie @ Sep 17th 2009 4:57PM
PETA wouldn't have been happy.
Miku @ Sep 17th 2009 5:05PM
PETA are never happy, I don't see why seeing digitalized dinosaurs carrying artillery would have changed anything.
Rob S. @ Sep 17th 2009 5:14PM
Maybe if they eat meat they would be happy.

This reminds me of when they canceled star craft ghost :(
for some reason

Squad based Starcraft MMO could be very interesting. You create a squad commander as your main character, as he levels he unlocks new abilities and gains new squad mates every few levels. Guilds are essentially battalions and PvP ranges from one or two player small skirmishes to guild vs guild full scale armies fighting for control of continents and planets. Make it so that everyone plays together but are spread across different solar systems/servers and factions can take control of them, like in EVE. Have each system have something there worth fighting for, PvE content, unique vendors, resources, etc.
Not hugely fleshed out, but I'd love to see something like that from Blizzard.
Rob S. @ Sep 17th 2009 4:42PM
Is that a dinosaur like creature with an artillery piece on it's back?...
Why did they cancel this again?
BigD145 @ Sep 17th 2009 5:01PM
I don't know why, but I would give my left nut for a rail gun that wasn't limited to rails. Can I get an atomic shell for that sucker?

I WANT TO RIDE THAT BAD BOY
CtrlBurn @ Sep 17th 2009 4:43PM
Anybody remember those old Blizzard games that were teased on their game discs? I know Pax Imperia 2 was one, was the other one called Dark Skies or something? Somebody with an original Warcraft II disc help me out.
CtrlBurn @ Sep 17th 2009 5:15PM
Shattered Nations.... I was way off. Also, apparently Pax Imperia II ended up being Pax Imperia Eminent Domain, but it was from THQ by that time. I guess I should have checked Wikipedia before I made a fool of myself on the internet. :(
Spartacus @ Sep 17th 2009 5:15PM
WoW was the worst thing that happened to Blizzard.
Sure they made a bajillion dollars (and continue to do so), but the unprecedented success set an already cautious and deliberate company on the road to even longer development cycles and fewer releases for any other IP.
Regault @ Sep 17th 2009 6:03PM
Only Blizz game that ever struck me as compelling was Shattered Nations, and of course it was the first they cancelled...
For those who never had the original WC2 discs, Shattered Nations was going to be a Civ-style game that took place in a post-apocalyptic world. You'd have to research stuff as well as explore ruins, and the map would gradually change due to nuclear winter's effects.
HippoHero @ Sep 17th 2009 5:31PM
"The art itself isn't that exciting"?
Are we looking at the same art here? Because *I* see a giant dinosaur with a cannon on its back.
Husher @ Sep 17th 2009 5:32PM
and a small house/shack
Husher @ Sep 17th 2009 5:31PM
Interesting keynote. I'm excited for their new MMO whatever it is that is. I think they have the right mind set when they said at blizzcon "This isn't a mmo to replace wow, but if we are to lose players to anther mmo why not to are own game?" which to me sounds great.
a squad based rpg tho. its nice to know that they have a lot of ideas on the back burner.
tb @ Sep 17th 2009 5:36PM
World of Starcraft FTW!
Giroro @ Sep 17th 2009 8:01PM
I'm pretty bitter at WoW, but now I know that when I assert that Blizzard stopped releasing games because of WoW I'm even more right.
