Adventure classic The Longest Journey arrives at GOG.com

Funcom's The Longest Journey is widely regarded as one of the best point-and-click adventures ever made -- it has an impressive metascore of 91 -- and can now be obtained by making the very short journey to the website of retro-ware purveyor GOG.com. $9.99 is the cost of embarking on the Journey, which, unfortunately, is only available for Windows XP / Vista (this is strong incentive to use Boot Camp, Mac users).
We're not sure what exactly is behind the recent resurgence of classic adventure games -- what with many from LucasArts' catalog appearing on Steam and Telltale's salvaging of Monkey Island (not to mention the excellent, multiplatform remake of the first game) -- but if there were a floating dialog tree in front of us right now, we'd click "Why yes, we quite like the trend. Please continue."

I love GOG. There's where I discovered Beyond Good and Evil. It was awesome.

Don't forget the nice bonus of all the extra crap they throw in free. No other online game retailer (that I am aware of) includes soundtracks, wallpapers, making-of videos, etc. GoG includes as many extras with each game as the developers can possibly find. :D

Oh wow, yeah I remember this one..it *is* a very good game and I enjoyed it.
...but I HOPE they released it with the bugfixes....this game is also a nightmare of conflicts with windows.
If you try it...better know your stuff. I beat the game 3 installations, 4 patches, and a decent sized headache later.

@ShadowflareXIII,
GoG is very good about making sure their releases work smoothly on modern computers and are always patched to the latest version :)

Not until Ragnar is finished with The Secret World, unfortunately.

Even then, I don't think he's ever really promised that he would do another one, just stated that he would like to.

He is already at work on an episodic sequel to be released on PSN and Xbox Live called Dreamfall Chapters. Though not much will get done until Secret World is release

"We're not sure what exactly is behind the recent resurgence of classic adventure games"
maybe because they're amazing!!
Full Throttle please!!!
And and Grim Fandango for the lady. ;)

Wow, it took GoG a long time to get this... it's been on Steam for over two years now.
AoE @ Sep 17th 2009 11:19PM
I was thinking the same. But then, the GoG release is surely a nicer one... they take steps to ensure their releases work well on both XP and Vista, are 100% drm-free releases, and include lots of extras that can't be found on other download services. In the case of The Longest Journey they include the OST, wallpapers, and some behind-the-scenes artwork from the developer. :)

Not only that, but there have been plenty of long-time GOG games that weren't available on Steam until very recently. The Fallout series in particular, which is not only more expensive on Steam, but comes with their built in DRM and without GOG's excellent suite of extras. So it goes both ways... and for my money, if a game's available on both services I'll go with GOG every time.

I have had The Longest Journey, on CD-ROM, for a few years, but I'm still somewhere near the beginning of it. So . . . it's been quite a long journey.
. . . Tough crowd.

TLJ is the most anticlimactic game that I still loved to death.
ydnar_h @ Sep 19th 2009 2:09AM
One of my favorite games of all time. Great story, great characters. Good to hear it's more available for anyone wanting to try it out
