Review: Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

I know Griffin covered some of the story in his great write-up of the game back at E3, but allow me to elaborate: Fawful has been going around the Mushroom Kingdom feeding Blorb mushrooms to the Toads, which cause them to turn into that big boulder from the Indiana Jones movie. It soon becomes an epidemic and Mario and Luigi are brought in to solve the case. But, Bowser intervenes and is summarily dispatched by the mustachioed heroes, only to be tricked into eating a different type of mushroom by Fawful afterward. He then goes back to the castle, inhales the duo into his body, and learns that he got duped. So while Bowser is trekking back to his castle to save it from doom, the plumbers are inside of their arch-nemesis, trying to find their way out.
Then there's the combat, which has a new layer of depth courtesy of the addition of Bowser. He's the big bruiser who can annihilate almost anything with a single punch, but when that doesn't work, he can suck enemies into himself and let the Bros. use their more robust move set to excel where their nemesis could not. Switching between Bowser and the Bros. adds more strategy to the combat and kept it from becoming too monotonous or stale throughout the game -- that was an occasional speed bump in previous titles. I only wished there were more of this three-way combat in the game, because there are large chunks where I was only able to use the Bros. or Bowser alone.
AlphaDream's writing and humor in these games have always felt almost timeless and the humor here, while definitely G-rated, is something that should work with gamers of all ages. And for those of you looking forward to the return of staple characters, know that Fawful is as endearing as he's always been (well, as endearing as a bad guy can be, anyway) and clumsy Luigi still gets no respect.
As hilarious as the game's story and characters are, though, they don't have to carry the experience alone. The combat, puzzles and witty dialog all come together to make a charming game that is AlphaDream at its consistent best. The series is still fun after all these years, and the new addition of Bowser really goes a long way towards freshening up the formula. Bowser's Inside Story is easily recommended to those of you who've played the previous games and is the best in the series so far.

What a delightful game.

I just got done beating Super Mario RPG again and I was itching for more. I enjoyed Paper Mario a lot so maybe I'll pick this up as well.

"might very well get it day one"
I think you're a little late for that. ;)

I think you'll dig it. The previous game in the series, Partners in Time, remains one of my favorite DS games to this day even though it came out ages ago. The combat is fun, and the dialog is pretty hilarious.

I loved Superstar Saga but I wasn't a big fan of Partners in Time. But this one looks promising. I'll need to pick it up.
captainprotonx @ Sep 17th 2009 9:17AM
The DS is kicking ass lately.
acefondu @ Sep 17th 2009 9:18AM
Yeah, and my wallet is crying because of it...
captainprotonx @ Sep 17th 2009 9:19AM
Not if you got the games at TRU. =D
DCBlack @ Sep 17th 2009 10:40AM
Seriously, I just caved and bought one...will be picking this game up real soon. I loved the first one back on the GBA, but haven't tried the 2nd in the series either.

I HAVE CHORTLES!

I've never checked out Superstar Saga, but loved Partners in Time. Bought this at TRU day one, but with all the great DS games suddenly out, I probably won't take this out of the shrinkwrap until near the end of the year.

Great review! I picked this up on tuesday of course. Superstar Saga was definitely my preference over PiT and this game seems like it's getting back to SS while maintaining the new DS features from PiT that worked. It's as easy as bread sandwiches to see that it's a great game! :D

Your mini-review is the mustard of my doom.
PedoJokerBear [Planeteer | Power of Gall Bladder] @ Sep 17th 2009 10:13AM
my power will do great in this game

I HAVE FURY!
Unfortunately, I don't have money enough to spare to buy this, what with all the other games that I've bought recently.
moominsean @ Sep 17th 2009 11:18AM
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Sometimes I wish they would shut the hell up and let me play the game, though. Here, I just spent two minutes explaining something two minutes ago...now let me explain something else because this is obviously the first video game you've ever played.
And the buttons confuse me sometimes, though (pressing the boys when I'm controlling Bowser, etc.), but less so than Partners in Time, which I enjoyed less than the previous game (and never finished). Overall a fun game...much improved over PIT.
Rob S. @ Sep 17th 2009 11:23AM
They do that for those they think have not played the game before, like little kids and new gamers.
Rob S. @ Sep 17th 2009 11:24AM
I enjoy this game, not as much as the first but more then the second one. Plus using Bowser to beat the crud out of stuff is fun.

I'm still sick and haven't ended up buying this or Scribblenauts. I've been feeling better, so hopefully this afternoon I'll be up for going out and buying these 2 games and enjoy them before I have to go back to work.
I loved the previous two and can't wait to play Bowser's Inside Story
Acorn @ Sep 17th 2009 12:37PM
I loved both SS and PiT, and this game was great too, but I certainly wouldn't say it's the best in the series. I'd put SS at the top, with PiT and this tied just below it.
FraGNeM @ Sep 17th 2009 8:52PM
There've been a lot of reviews saying this is the best yet in the series.
What makes you value Superstar Saga over this and Partners in Time?
Acorn @ Sep 18th 2009 1:35PM
I think it's partly that everything felt new and fresh for SS, since it was the first game, but there are other things. For example, the Bros. moves were better and for some reason or other the battles felt less tedious (I found that a lot of the battles as Bowser in this game were extremely tedious). There's a possibility that's it's at least partially nostalgia, but I still think I prefer SS even without the nostalgia.
Lakail @ Sep 17th 2009 1:14PM
Finally a Mario game that teaches you the danger of eating strange mushrooms.
GrungeSpoo @ Sep 17th 2009 7:10PM
I agree, it's a fun game. But my god, must Bowser be a butt-monkey in every scene? I haven't felt this sorry for a character ever since the Trix Bunny was on TV.
Also, Bowser has a magic ass. Who knew?
Finito @ Sep 17th 2009 9:31PM
I'm a huge fan of the Mario RPG series and after the slight disappointment that was Partners in Time I'm delighted to hear this is possibly the best iteration yet. Superstar Saga was my favorite GBA game and I'm hoping this one will match that.
Too bad I have to wait until October 9 to pick it up (Europe, ugh).
