Sony's Kobayashi: better ICO box art could have boosted sales

As an example of Western-focused marketing that didn't work, Kobayashi presented the Japanese and North American boxes for ICO, the game that brought the Last Guardian developers to prominence. "If the packaging was designed differently, we think it would have sold more," he said. "In fact on the internet many people have said that the Japanese version was better." Because it is.
Kobayashi then finished by highlighting what he saw as a different perception of what makes a "new" game in the West and Japan. He said that a "new" game in the US or Europe could be "something similar to something that's come before, because they think it is easier for people to understand."
"But actually we don't like this - it's like you're simulating, following suit, combining two titles into one," he continued. "It seems the definition of a new title is different in the US and Europe to Japan. It means a new genre, that's what we call a new game."
Japan has just as many iterative sequels as anywhere else, but we guess they aren't considered as new?

Americans designers need to stop putting facial collages.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Sep 17th 2009 2:46PM
Mass Effect's box art was nice, and the film version of "The Philosopher's Stone" actually has a respectable cover compared to the rest of the series. I'd actually like to see more Star Wars box art rip-offs.
ICO's US box is just devoid of personality, which doesn't reflect too well on a game that is chock full of it.
el serpiente @ Sep 17th 2009 3:14PM
I think they should outsource the cover designs to Polish poster designers.
No joke, they are incredible...

Space @ Sep 17th 2009 3:16PM
that japanese cover is pretty terrible too. You can tell they just plastered some concept art on the box...the title was not thought about at all...just thrown on.
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 17th 2009 3:25PM
Those Polish posters are too abstract for American audiences. We all know the US doesn't take too well to art.
el serpiente @ Sep 17th 2009 4:03PM
Yeah, you are probably right.
But as gaming "matures" it would be nice to see some more adult-oriented properties get a more sophisticated visual representation than the tired tropes catering to the 13 year old male.
Bradwart @ Sep 17th 2009 4:40PM
Knights of the Old Republic had good box art. Lots of faces on that one.
Massmass @ Sep 17th 2009 4:40PM
As ugly as the U.S box art is, the Japanese one would probably have sold worse here. Sure, it's pretty but for a game it doesn't look the least bit interesting.
Eh @ Sep 17th 2009 4:58PM
american designers need to put the art back in box art
Shagittarius @ Sep 17th 2009 7:28PM
@eh "american designers need to put the art back in box art"
Yeah but with the success of the Wii no one can figure out if gamers are smart, sophisticated, art appreciative people or drooling imbeciles who want to control games with their ass.
CH3BURASHKA @ Sep 17th 2009 8:50PM
Truly, the American box art is extremely cramped.
I can't wait for news about The Last Guardian, anything.
I'm dabbling with programming and thought that if I can cross the language barrier, perhaps I can get a job at Team ICO and be part of the future. Then I read a Kotaku article about how the president of T.ICO would rather not hire people in crunch time rather than hire mediocre people. There go my hopes.
BananaBoat @ Sep 18th 2009 6:08AM
I know I'm way late to the party, but that box art isn't "concept art". It's a piece that Fumito Ueda himself painted by hand, in the style of another painter (Giorgio De Chhirico, give or take a few letters). It is easily my favorite cover of a video game ever, and it looks incredible in the 2000x2000 (ish) size I've been able to find it on flickr (without the title, rating logo, etc.)
I remember the day I got my PS2. I went to the store, and bought the PS2 along with Armored Core 2, and a few other games. I took one look at Ico's box art, and I decided not to buy it (I was young in those days). If it had the box art of the PAL or JP release, I would have scooped it up in a second. I wouldn't actually get to play Ico until a few years later, and it is a shame that I didn't buy it day one.
Oh, and in case anyone didn't know this, the PS2 version of Ico is actually superior. There are a couple of rooms with different puzzles and better textures, and there is a lightsaber easter egg that you can find while replaying the game after beating it. There is also a mode where Yorda is subtitled in English, but I'm not sure if the American release had that.
BananaBoat @ Sep 18th 2009 2:24PM
The PAL edition*
And the JP edition.
Markez @ Sep 17th 2009 2:42PM
Anyone who buys/doesn't buy a game based upon box art please raise your hand? This seems like a pretty gong show assertion in my opinion...
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 17th 2009 2:44PM
I look at the back. Read what the game is about and look at the screenshots. Then I decided based on that.
In contrast to that, I have found that buying CD's based off of their cover art can be a very rewarding experience.
copa @ Sep 17th 2009 2:50PM
I find the box on the left very cool. It reminds me of what I find so appealing about Ico.
The box on the right is absurdly horrible. I look at it, and I have to remember in spite of the box that Ico is actually a very well-received game.
Go on all you want about how box art doesn't make a difference, but I guarantee you if you put the Barbie Horse Adventures box art on the cover of Modern Warfare 2 you are going to see reduced sales.
The Baron @ Sep 17th 2009 2:51PM
Yeah, you should never judge it on the covers, but non-gamers are bound to skip over things as they're browsing the shelves if they don't catch their eyes as something that may interest them. I think the art for Ico is beautiful, but it may not catch people's attention as much as a man with an SMG crouching behind a tank, pointing at you.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Sep 17th 2009 2:54PM
The real question is, how many of you go into a game store and NOT know what you want? I would assume 9 out of 10 videogame consumers walk into a GameStop and know exactly what they're buying. Who fucking looks a box art? I'm too busy watching demos online and downloading them on XBL/PSN.
Courtney @ Sep 17th 2009 2:58PM
I don't now, but once upon a time box art certainly got me to pick up a game and check it out. I would say I was like that well into my 20s. So the art might not have sold me, but it would have got me to take the first step.
Also, neither my wife or kid are as into the gaming community as I am. When we go into look for new games, both of them are definitely drawn towards box art that they find attractive. I'm pretty sure the kid has bought games because of box art (not that I think that's a good thing).
So yeah, I think the assertion here is completely valid.
AsherR [Planeteer | Power of The Hoff] @ Sep 17th 2009 2:58PM
@Storm Eagle: Yeah, I worked at Best Buy for a bit in the media dept. And when I straightened the CD area I'd look for cool looking cover art and give it a listen when I could. :)
My friend always would get pissy that I did that too.
Markez @ Sep 17th 2009 2:59PM
Now that it comes to me, when I was buying a few games for the new PS3 last night there was some mother rifling through the PS2 section and ended up pulling out a SOCOM game. Maybe that's the kind of consumer that's influenced by boxart, but I think it's something of a non-factor for a game like ICO. Especially given the two options above...
aristokrat @ Sep 17th 2009 3:05PM
Come on guys, think about this logically. We are the not the majority of sales for any video game (except maybe Psychonauts). The average consumer (unfortunately) does not do a ton of research before buying a game, and to them, cover art is probably important in getting them to pick the game up and even look at the back. I understand what he's saying about average Joe looking at ICO and not even thinking twice about it.
Dirty @ Sep 17th 2009 3:10PM
I was at Gamestop the other day.... I know awful I got 2 25 dollar gift cards... long story. There were 2 moms their with STACKS of games. They had no idea what they were buying.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 17th 2009 3:16PM
You should've helped 'em out, Dirty.
I always offer my advice to people who look lost in game stores. They seem to value the help, especially when you're doing more than the idiots behind the counter.
Matter of fact, just recently, a kid was asking me about a long, involved RPG on the PS2 for his little brother for his birthday. I told him to buy the .HACK series and as it turned out, he had played it before and did like it, so he bought him the others.
Markez @ Sep 17th 2009 3:19PM
Certainly good points all, but what about this specific instance? Do you think it would've made a difference for ICO?
Dirty, I at least hope you dropped at least one 'DEATH TO GAMESTOP' while in store. Otherwise, you my friend, are a hypocritical lolrus.
WINterfang @ Sep 17th 2009 3:23PM
Cool coverarts are a selling point for me, a lame or quickly put together cover made the game look cheap.
Nate @ Sep 17th 2009 3:23PM
raises hand. wait... does that mean I don't buy based off box art or I do. Did no one else catch that he asked you to do one thing to simulate both answers?
Markez @ Sep 17th 2009 3:25PM
Please tentatively wiggle your hands around shoulder level if you have feelings.
Courtney @ Sep 17th 2009 3:29PM
Markez, in this specific case, the Japanese cover would have got me to pick up the box if I didn't know anything about the game. It's artistic, communicates something to me...loneliness or isolation? It appeals to me.
The right hand one looks like the box to a crappy JRPG, which I would likely pass on.
Now, would that be true for the average consumer, no clue.
Dirty @ Sep 17th 2009 3:36PM
I tried to help them out by screaming "Gamestop is the Devil" right in their faces.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 17th 2009 3:49PM
I found this while looking for some sort of list of "best box art". It is in fact, GameRadar's worst box art of last year. Read the captions after each game..it's HILARIOUS!

I don't know if you saw my reply but your PS3 issue (humming & graphical artifacts) is a ground loop issue. It's very easy to fix. Please read below.

Eh @ Sep 17th 2009 5:03PM
That box is so amateurish that anybody at a game store looking for a game will completely skip that one. Nobody looks at the back of every box, the cover has to be interesting enough for them to bother.
Good box art usually means a good game since the company had enough money to hire an artist rather than have their C++ guy play with Photoshop.
Hostile @ Sep 17th 2009 2:43PM
I've always had a problem with N.A. cover art needing a face/character all in-your-face upfront. They always do that with JRPGs and it's horrible most of the time.
AsherR [Planeteer | Power of The Hoff] @ Sep 17th 2009 3:03PM
A lot of JRPGs do have really bad box art, but some are quite good.
I always love the Shin Mega Ten box arts. (Maybe because I'm a bit of a fanboy.)
Tales of Vesperia's was decent. I still like the Japanese version for the PS3 better though... I don't recall what the Japanese 360 version looked like though.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Sep 17th 2009 2:43PM
Amen to that...
I'm sure a lot of people where looking at the box saying..
"What the hell is I...C..O?"
It's too bad. What an accomplishment.

Doreo (Psn-doreo503) @ Sep 17th 2009 3:25PM
If Ico is re released I will have gone through all the trouble of searching Gamestop after Gamestop for a copy two months ago... It's a great title but I don't know if it will fit in with the newer age of gamers. Sure you'll have you and I who will buy it, but will some call of duty obsessed preteen even glance at it? I'm not too sure.

This reminds me of those Epic game boxes for the old 2600, Vic20 and C64 games.
NintendoJunkie @ Sep 17th 2009 3:59PM
I actually currently have a Commodore Vic 20 in EXCELLENT shape along w/ the tape drive (yes there was a time when even floppies didn't exist yet), like 10 games...some w/ original boxes...and also several programming manuals. I got it all @ a yard sale last year for $5!!!
Needless to say I was geeked & ecstatic about my find. One of these days I need to modify the cables to get it to working on a more current tv.
