It's true, because I remember seeing Ico and overlooking it because of it's strange name and uninteresting boxart.

Hell no the european box art for Ico is probably the best cover i've ever seen for a game.

Keep in mind that we can't just blame the designer for the cover fiasco. All covers, even bad ones, are ultimately made by committee. Not only did the designer's Creative Director approve it, but likely everyone up the chain did as well, incl the US VP of Mktg. I can just imagine an executive demanding a cover that highlighted the advanced technical prowess of the PS2s 3-D rendering engine and requiring 3-D computer graphics to be featured in the art.

It's been mentioned in past interviews with Team ICO that their game was rushed for an early US release to get close to the US PS2 launch date, and that compromised the cover art. The JP/PAL cover, painted by Ueda himself, and the tweaked game extras (lightsaber, watermelons, enhanced subtitles for all characters after the first play through) represented the final game that Ueda and Kaido wanted to release. Would Ueda even have time to create the great surrealist cover painting he wanted while trying to hit the deadline for the Gold Master?

And because Japan hates America, we never got a version of ICO with all the extras. We got a crappy cover and unenhanced game. I'm still waiting on a US release of the Japanese or PAL version.

I never realised that the North American version had different box art... Luckily SCEE in Europe ran with the Japanese box art, packaged in a cardboard slip case containing art cards.

(As a result, posters should not refer to the NA atrocity as the "Western" version as it wasn't)
