Rumor: 360 802.11n adapter spotted in GOW2 GOTY box
To be more specific -- and much less acronymic -- it appears that the super speedy Xbox 360 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter has been spotted on a promotional flier inside the Italian version of the Gears of War 2 Game of the Year edition. Italian gaming site Mondobox.com (translation) posted an image of the leaflet, which you can see above. Assuming it's authentic, it seems to indicate that both the original 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n adapter will continue to exist in the same market. And that, hopefully, indicates a price drop on the ridiculously overpriced original adapter.
We've contacted Microsoft about the peripheral and will update this post with new information if and when we receive it.

Kevin949 @ Sep 18th 2009 5:24PM
I see a black one! That makes me happy.
Cheesus(Crust) @ Sep 18th 2009 6:44PM
Yeah, the Black ones always did work better and produce more product than the old(native) one!
Wait,...This isn't 1678? WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reaper man @ Sep 19th 2009 12:01PM
That's what she said.
pacokorn77 @ Sep 18th 2009 5:25PM
Guess it's time for me to get an n-router.
Platinum_Skeet @ Sep 18th 2009 5:37PM
I have the N router just need to see if this really pulls through on the tests. The tech geek in me says it'll all be o.k but my gamer side says otherwise...
Pantsparty @ Sep 18th 2009 5:26PM
How exactly is this adapter different?
Besides being black and 2 antennas.
Scump @ Sep 18th 2009 5:30PM
the 802.11n in the title.
5ghz noise free wireless
the original suported this over the weaker 'a' band, so its vey different
ericloewe @ Sep 18th 2009 5:30PM
It supports Wireless N, in addition to the original one's a/b/g.
Ashitaka @ Sep 18th 2009 5:30PM
It uses a new (better) protocol which affords users double the transfer speed they had using their previous dongles, and provides a massive boost in connection range to WiFi hotspots.
Basically, it's better than the common adapter. Unfortunately, it's way more expensive, I wonder how much the bundle will cost.
silverwolf761 @ Sep 18th 2009 5:45PM
The only difference you're likely to notice is an increase in the distance you can have your 360 from your router (as long it's an n-specced router too). There is also a transfer speed increase but the g-spec already outpaced pretty much all residential connections, so the only transfer speed you'll notice is if you're transferring files locally over your own network.
If you've got an 802.11g connection going already, have no issues with the distance between your 360 and your router, and don't share files over your network, then it's pretty much a waste of money (especially if you don't have an 802.11n router)
Sly (PSN: SniperChameleon) @ Sep 18th 2009 5:56PM
ashitaka, wireless N isn't exactly new. it's been around for years.
CaramelZappa @ Sep 18th 2009 6:22PM
@Sly, draft N has been around for years, but it was just recently finalized.
mahouneko @ Sep 18th 2009 6:46PM
Actually, it says nothing about 5 GHz. As far as I know, it might just be a 2.4 GHz wireless-N adapter.
Sly (PSN: SniperChameleon) @ Sep 18th 2009 7:09PM
zappa, i didn't know there was a draft N and a finalized N before now. hmm... i guess i'm using draft N then...
Demaar @ Sep 18th 2009 10:31PM
I think n was only ratified as a standard recently, but there have been products using draft 2.0 for quite some time.

thats some funny shit right there
Halo Pony @ Sep 18th 2009 6:00PM
Exactly what I was thinking.
Why would a Microsoft product be advertised on a God of War 2 box?
CaramelZappa @ Sep 18th 2009 6:24PM
Funny, but fanboyish.
Sprinkles @ Sep 18th 2009 7:28PM
Even I laughed my ass off!

Dammit, wrong comment thread. Oh well, does remind me of GOW confusion back a couple of years ago, which is amusing :P

gad I miss living over there
Markez @ Sep 18th 2009 5:33PM

No Kill Tayler @ Sep 18th 2009 5:34PM
MS, thats bad advertisement. You cut off half of that lady's leg!
james @ Sep 18th 2009 5:39PM
id buy it if they didn't double the flippin price
CyberKnight @ Sep 18th 2009 5:41PM
"And that, hopefully, indicates a price drop on the ridiculously overpriced original adapter."
Either that, or it'll stay at the same price and the N will set all new records for "ridiculously-overpriced".
Remember what company we're talking about here. Last time I checked, they're still passing off 512MB flash memory cards as $50 accessories. (The fact that I found one as an "open box deal" for $25 and thought that was a great deal makes me sad if I think about it too hard.)
BunnySlapper @ Sep 18th 2009 5:52PM
Maybe you should have looked around more?

I'd like to point out that a review for the first product included, in all-caps nonetheless, "AVOID AT ALL COSTS."
Also, $30 for 512MB of memory is obviously still bullshit. One of the reasons that I dislike my 360 is that everything proprietary, so Microsoft can charge up-the-ass for everything.
Reuben @ Sep 18th 2009 6:03PM
On second thought, I recant some of that. I suppose I was thinking mainly of the HDD.
johnny @ Sep 18th 2009 5:50PM
can i use a different wireless adapter on the xbox 360 since microsoft is ripping us off? Im not paying $100...anyone have any recommendations for a cheap one that works good
Sly (PSN: SniperChameleon) @ Sep 18th 2009 5:57PM
if i remember right, you can use any wireless adapter with it. but i'm not completely sure...
Richard Mitchell @ Sep 18th 2009 6:06PM
You can't use any USB WiFi dongle, no. If you want USB, you'll have to use the Microsoft one. You can, however, use wireless bridges that connect via Ethernet. In fact, with a little technical know-how, you can set up a cheap WiFi router as a bridge.
You have to use custom firmware though. I've never tried it, but it's much cheaper if you have the necessary patience / skills.
CaramelZappa @ Sep 18th 2009 6:30PM
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/pictures-story/74-xbox360-wireless-free.html
There are a couple ways to do it. You can use 2 wireless routers and use one of them as a bridge to your 360, or you can use your laptop (or desktop) that has wireless to relay the signal over to your 360 over a wire. Google it and you'll find plenty of different guides.
Sly (PSN: SniperChameleon) @ Sep 18th 2009 7:10PM
oh, i guess the guy that told me that was wrong. oh well.
Easo @ Sep 19th 2009 9:43PM
Any wireless usb router will work with the 360. When setting the 360 up on a wireless network, there is an option to use a usb drive to transfer your settings from the computer to the xbox, use that and it will work just fine.
yolarrydabomb @ Sep 20th 2009 8:48PM
but if you use different type of way to get xbox live...you cant system link
eNrique @ Sep 18th 2009 5:52PM
Only for $299.99
DeepFriedSushi @ Sep 18th 2009 5:59PM
why do you care you dont even have a 360 anyways.
el serpiente @ Sep 18th 2009 6:18PM
I believe it's called "schadenfreude", look it up.
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 18th 2009 6:36PM
Nah, it'll probably be more like $199.99.
dogmaticatheist @ Sep 18th 2009 7:25PM
I'm predicting $149.
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Sep 18th 2009 5:54PM
you didn't read the fine print... will work when you pay the $20 fee.
jk.
LegendaryRedass @ Sep 18th 2009 5:56PM
New 250 gig hd +wireless n adapter =300$+?
Even 200$ would be solid raping. Goddamn you Microsoft.
DeepFriedSushi @ Sep 18th 2009 6:01PM
according to you that would make it...
$400 for an arcade, 250GB HDD, and Wifi-N
how exactly would that be raping?
BunnySlapper @ Sep 18th 2009 6:19PM
Are you being forced to buy a new HDD and Wireless adapter? By whom?
Don't be so dramatic.
LegendaryRedass @ Sep 18th 2009 9:05PM
Since those items are proprietary I would be forced to buy them if I ever wanted upgrade, and I would like to get the most out of my 20meg fios that I pay 80$ a month for.
They're not exactly comparable with prices for the same type of items you can get for your pc. I already paid for a so called 120 gig hd, that for some reason only had 108 gigs of space. You can get a terabyte for as much as they charge for that hardrive/lie.
I guess those network adapters are pretty exspensive to make. My iPhone comes with one built in and it cost 99$ for the whole damn phone.
I didn't think I was being dramatic. I was speaking matter of factly. That's just the way it is anymore. Every company that I deal with is raising prices on everything. Those of you who pay the bills probably get that.
Let me clarify this too, that price I guessed at doesn't include a console. When the "120" gig hds came out they were around 130$. Wireless adaptors are 99$.
