It's not often that we get to post a breaking news, stop-the-presses kind of story about an impending sequel to a beloved franchise. Of course, that adage doesn't really apply to Street Figher, a series with more sequels and spin-offs than the Joystiq staff has fingers and toes. On the Japanese Street Fighter IV blog, Capcom's Natsuki Shiozawa intimated that an announcement regarding a sequel would be made in the near future. With TGS only a week away, we can only hope that such an announcement will be made then.
IGN quite rightly notes that an SFIV "sequel" doesn't necessarily equate to a brand new entry in the series. Given the series' history, it's easily possible that it could end up being an extension of the game, à la Street Fighter II Championship Edition. We might add that an SFIV refresh would be perfect for the impending holiday shopping season.

How about SF IV: Where the online lobby doesn't sucketh edition ?
Instead of making new versions with MINOR changes that they could likely update into the new game, FIX THE DAMN ONLINE in the one that already exists. I hear the same from both ps3 & 360 users!!!

I gotta say, the online lobby system is awful. Why can't I just automatically jump into a game with someone after I finish the last one. The repeated match end --> play online --> find a player/create a match is terrible. If I want to spend an hour playing the game, I shouldn't spend 25 minutes of that in the menu system. Yuck.

TO make the sequel, they would have to first piss on Raul Julia's grave, and i'm pretty sure he would rise from his grave, looking awesome, and would gain actual M.Bison powers and choke the life out of everyone who was involved in that movie. He would then just for the fans of Street Fighter, call Chuck Norris over and they would both take turns kicking (Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking him of course) the shit out of Jean Claude Van Damme. Raul Julia would then arise to the heavens (again) saying only one line to us all:
"Stop the Akira movie. At all costs."

Holiday season? You're kidding right?
This is a japanese fighting game. It comes out in the arcade, lingers around for 6-9 months and then finally gets a slightly rushed console release.
Even if location testing started NOW, I doubt the game would get released as a finished build in 2010.

Still wouldn't be out this holiday season. All this stuff gets tested publically and would still be in Japanese arcades first. =/
I agree that would be awesome though. Japanese arcades get upgrades for free, but the console consumers get boned. I wouldn't mind playing even 30 bucks in DLC if the content was good enough. But another 60? nah.

This is why I hate buying fighting games way to many squeals. SFIV was the first fighting game I bought in a long time and I was happy to play $65 for it at launch because I though there would be no need for some sort of expansion because DLC could cover new characters.

They didn't say it wouldn't be available as DLC. It could be available as an upgrade for an already purchased SFIV game, or simply be available for anyone.

what? why is that limited to fighting games?
street fighter was pretty much the only series to do so many sequels.. and if you really think about it.. it was only really bad in the snes days. tekken, virtua fighter, soul calibur, mortal kombat.. and just about every other fighter besides guilty gear or maybe king of fighters take years between sequels.. just like every other genre.
first of all, its probably going to be dlc, and if it wasnt.. itd probably not come out til at least late next year if not early 2011 (if it was a major update).. which would be like buying any game thats not an rpg or from nintendo.. a sequel is expected within 2 years.

I've spent more money that a logical man should on the arcade version, seeing as I could have bought the 360 game three times over. In fact, I think there was a point where I actually owned the game. Regardless of that, as good as Street Fighter 4 is, the only way I'll be buying a sequel is if they release it on the platforms that matter: DS/Wii/PSP. To ignore the three biggest platforms in favour of the HD sisters is the greatest slap in the face I've seen from Capcom since they decided to shutter Clover.

Well, you are safe then because Capcom is based out of Japan. WHEW!
I am glad to hear this. SFIV is a blast. I host 10-20 matches on the PC just about every day just to play some folks. I have met people from all over the world on this game, and it shows just how much of a video game icon the Street Fighter series is.
I will be glad to give Capcom my money if they do this. They have been really good to the PC community this year - Resident Evil 5 PC is insanely gorgeous looking and you guys should check it out for sure.
GFWL - Remember, while most companies would not give their PC version any polish, Capcom came in and gave us more. That alone deserves support.

I've felt this way for a while and I'm wondering how you guys and gals feel about this:
I feel as though Street Fighter IV was a huge let down. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the game and I've been in love with the legendary pugilist for a long time. Still, I feel it didn't come with the same kind of fresh face, or revolution, as SFIII or even the Alpha series. It simply brought back the old school charm of SFII and retooled it: it just seemed as if Capcom was trying to cash in on nostalgia, while at the same time introducing SF to a new generation.
Granted, the success of the SFIII and the Alpha series is arguable, not receiving nearly the reception that SFIV has garnered. SFIV, having become so widely accepted by most if the gaming world, makes the others seem esoteric in comparison, appreciated by the hardcore fighting audience only. Still, I applaud SFIII and the Alpha series if only for paving the way for its successor.
I think this generation the best new fighter goes to Blazblue. I understand that SFIV and BB are too completely different fighters and hard to compare in some ways. However, I truly respect what BB attempts, and ultimately succeeds, to do. It provides a cast of characters where not a single character plays or feels alike, while providing a system that is both simple to use and fully encompassing. The high-octane, "offense is defense" nature of the game takes a while to get used to, but the strategies are deep and immense.
I never thought I would say that about an Arc System Works game, especially in contrast to Street Fighter... my first love.
How do you guys feel?

I definitely agree that Blazblue is the better game overall, thanks in large part to its stellar netcode. It definitely raised the bar in terms of online play. I have buddies in Europe and Japan who play and we experience not an inkling of lag when we play matches, which is incredible for a fighter.
As for the fighting itself, I prefer BB's more aggressive approach; "turtling" is one of my pet peeves in SFIV, and BlazBlue downright PUNISHES you for that crap.
Like SFIV, it has its flaws in character balance; in higher level play, Arakune and V-13 (and Rachel, to a lesser extent) dominate the top tiers, but that's all too common in fighting games.
Hopefully, any new SF entry will up the ante in terms of online play. I might even start playing it again.
