I have both consoles so I don't really care which console games come out for but in this case I would not play an mmo on a console controller. If there was an mmo on a console I would have to have a keyboard and mouse which means ps3. Other than that Im gonna stick to pcs for mmos

Doesnt the PS3 have the advantage with MMO's in that HDD installations are optional a developer on the xbox 360 has to make the MMO stream of a DVD which is difficult for an MMO. due to the large amount of data that needs to be modified from the original DVD copy?

I feel, we'll have to wait for the next hardware generation for MMOs where the hardware will be designed around the Internet more. The 360 and PS3 is so 2005.

The PS3 is the perfect platform for console MMO's. Sony has no problem allowing the use of a mouse and keyboard it's just that dev's have to want to put it into their games.

I just find this funny that Turbine a company that flopped mmo's giving advice about how to make a mmo for console system. I mean they had D&D go from paying per month to free. Asheroon Call 2 failed for them. There Lord of Ring game isn't even that good. The problem is when you make pc game to be ported to console you will run into any problems. Instead of having the game being runned off DVD/Blue Ray when not have the pre-installed on HD.

truth be told that PS3 is harder to develop. Since PS3 is hardware base development while 360 is PC based. But the end result for the PS3 is great if can get it to work. Exclusive games on the PS3 already told you that.
Developing for the PS3 is like manual labor, like the article said you do the heavy lifting yourself, while on the 360 you use a fork lift to do the work for you. However, the end result the manual labor gains better and stronger physic than the one who operates the forklift.

The thing about the PS3 is that you're not supposed to rely on the possible existence of RAM to help chug your program along. You're apparently supposed to stream the entirety of volatile dynamic data into the various SPUs without ever pausing to use the RAM. When the PS2 first came out, that was essentially the challenge associated with it:

The way I see the challenge associated with the PS3's Cell architecture is that it's essentially the same issue with the PS2 except that you want to run multiple threads simultaneously and not think/worry too much about those threads that you ship off to the SPUs so that you can focus on using the PPU (main processor) to do something awesome with the RSX or something.

Well, the whole 256mb vs 512mb argument is wrong. PS3 has 256mb main memory, and 256mb video memory. 360 has 512 main and video shared, which means both the videocard and the cpu share this memory. So if one needs more than 256 and its available, it can use some extra memory, but the other device now has less memory available to it. That's the advantage. So, technically speaking they both have the same amount of memory.

I think the problem with porting an MMO to a console isn't so much what can or can't be done but more people attitude and lack of original ideas. Everyone just wants to make a WoW clone these days to try and steal a small chunk of the market and the console game makers are worried about access times from the game discs.

Firstly, a more traditional-type MMO wouldn't work simply as it requires a keyboard for all the abilities, chat etc and that defeats the purpose of a console based game. Secondly why not utilise the fact that both the Xbox and PS3 have large storage spaces now and have a large portion of the game installed here and thus avoid the use of disc access for all info?

The big thing is to not be boxed in on a fantasy hack n slash PvE based MMO, and concentrate on what the console systems do better than anyone and that is first person style games. Oblivion was a huge success as was Fallout 3, one was a sword weilding knight of the realm and the other was a gun toting nuclear renegade...both were awesome games that could easily have been converted into an MMO environment, simple controls, immersive gameplay and the open-world gameplay that is required for a truly great MMO. Instanced areas could be inserted for group quests, an auction house would work simply enough still, factions, guilds etc could still be implemented and best of all, the PvP nature of these types of games is already present from such games as Call of Duty. Chat could be done through a headset while in a group or within set channels...most players already use external voice comms software while playing online games so why not just make this the default communications setup?

I think this would be a boon for the console market if it was done correctly, make it fun, in-depth enough to keep yoru attention and have the come-back draw of loot and upgrades that make people play for hours on end. If Guild Wars managed to run things without fees then I see no reason why this would need it? Lots of potential and I hope it doesn't get swept under the carpet under the pretense of "beign too hard"
