Platinum Games not developing PS3 version of Bayonetta
With the exception of Valve, most developers have no qualms about developing for PlayStation 3. Sure, it's still far more "tempting" to work on the 360's accessible architecture, but most recent releases appear to have shaken PS3's earlier substandard multiplatform performance.
Most. Bayonetta developer, Platinum Games, recently admitted on its blog that it was not developing the PS3 version; instead, it handed off PS3 porting to Sega. Platinum Games' CEO Tatsuya Minami wrote on the company's official blog that Platinum would be "overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be." However, instead of saying both versions will run identically, he simply advises PS3 owners to "[play] the game for yourself and [come] to your own conclusions."
PlayStation commenters weren't too kind to Minami's admission, saying, "Platinum Games is trying to shift the blame to Sega" for what gamers fear will be a substandard port. History certainly gives their worries credence, but we'll find out for sure later this week at Tokyo Game Show.

I don't mind Sega doing it. They seem competent enough.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 20th 2009 2:42PM
Agreed. I'm still very excited for the game.

I really hope this doesn't get "Orange Box'd" or "Ghostbuster'd".

I was really looking forward to this game but sadly, my days of buying a watered-down port are over.
But I'll still rent it to see if the game's any good.
Thanks for the advice, Platinum.
Jason @ Sep 20th 2009 9:34PM
Yes. Sega has made a game or two. Platinum games? They probably just don't have the resources to create a PS3 development team. Sega obviously does. Maybe after this game they will have a bit more cash flow.
ShadowflareXIII @ Sep 21st 2009 1:11AM
...tell ya the truth, I'd *prefer* if Sega did.
chawaa @ Sep 21st 2009 1:28AM
who cares if this game is not coming to ps3, Its going to tank anyway with the sea of aaa titles this winter 360 can have lord knows they need it!
Raider197 @ Sep 20th 2009 2:36PM
What a disgrace, Platinum Games, I hope Sega don't muck up your port because it shouldn't be blamed on them like it was the Orange Box and EA
Adam @ Sep 20th 2009 3:30PM
Huh? EA owns Valve, and Valve already took responsibility for that...
Guess_Who @ Sep 20th 2009 3:38PM
EA doesn't own Valve, what the hell are you smoking?
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 20th 2009 4:18PM
EA doesn't own Valve. EA has a publishing agreement with Valve.
Show me where the EA logo is on Steam? Exactly. There isn't one.

psn: ijustw1n @ Sep 20th 2009 5:15PM
It took Valve 1.5 years before they took responsibility for the PS3 version of the Orange Box being substandard.

wallywallas @ Sep 20th 2009 2:37PM
I don't get it. If it's a substandard port, why even make one at all?
I would rather they keep it a 360 exclusive, than to buy a less cool version of it on my PS3. (Orange Box, Ghostbusters)
Not sure why I even posted, I'm not even interested in this game....
Raider197 @ Sep 20th 2009 2:40PM
They get more sales by bringing it to PS3. And Ghostbusters wasn't that inferior from what I heard, only a slight graphics downgrade, nothing noteworthy
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 20th 2009 2:41PM
Why?
MONEY.
That's why.
Third party exclusives are a thing of the past.
sean @ Sep 20th 2009 2:42PM
Well its good that they are handing it over to sega because they dont have to waste there time and money to make a port that will sell less copies, now i have both a 360 and a PS 3 and the only games i play on the ps 3 are exclusives other then that i watch blu rays but if a game comes out on both systems I usually gravitate towards the 360 version because most of the games are better made and the controllers (oh and i guess xbox live)
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 20th 2009 2:45PM
Am I the only person who is sick of reading "now i have both a ps3 and 360 but..."
We don't need to know why you don't play your PS3. Some people prefer PS3, some people prefer 360. I don't know who you are trying to convince.
Jrinswand @ Sep 20th 2009 3:02PM
Spyder, for once I actually agree with you. I've had a PS3 and a 360 for a couple of years now and I haven't played my 360 in at least a year and a half. I can't even remember the last game that I played on it. Though, to be fair, I hardly play my PS3 either and when I do, it's mostly just God of War.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Sep 20th 2009 3:06PM
NOTHING WRONG WITH GHOSTBUSTERS ON PS3!!!
Orange Box on the other hand does have its fuckups in Team Fortress 2 on PS3....but its still pretty damn good...
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Sep 20th 2009 3:37PM
Chris. Why the hell haven't I added you to my PSN yet?
Ghostbusters on PS3 was a fine game. I enjoyed it, but the story began to drag down a bit for me about 1/2 way through.
And yes, TF2 isn't the greatest on PS3. But that doesn't mean it's good on Xbox360.
Both are incredibly inferior to the PC version. That goes with any Valve game.
Space @ Sep 20th 2009 5:31PM
well If I had a working 360 I'd still play all the multiplat games on a PS3 because it can handle it without breaking.
mahouneko @ Sep 21st 2009 2:48AM
@SpyderTaco:
Problem with Valve is that they're very used to programming on a PC platform where RAM and memory are not terribly huge problems. When it comes to console platforms though, Valve is happier with the 360 platform mostly because of their familiarity with the PC architecture and (what seems like) their heavy reliance on Windows development tools. The PS3 is essentially a paradigm shift that throws everything they understand out the window, which is usually the normal response for most developers.
What the PS3 is good at is crunching numbers and performing algorithms assigned to its various SPUs, which is essentially the same situation everyone faced with the PS2's Emotion Engine:
http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2000/04/ps2vspc.ars
The difference between the Emotion chip and the Cell SPUs is that the Emotion chip doesn't handle multi-threaded programs whereas the Cell SPUs were designed with parallel processing in mind.
The other thing that developers forget or neglect to mention is their choice of libraries when going multi-platform. I mean, when you're going multi-platform, it's logical to go with libraries that are broadly supported. But once you get into the habit of developing with a specific set of tools and those tools don't work on another platform, that's usually when people start tearing their hair out. It's sort of like watching people who are used to paying for everything with their American Express credit card who find out that their AmEx card isn't accepted by certain vendors or restaurants and they don't have a Visa or MasterCard on them.
Jrinswand @ Sep 21st 2009 3:40PM
Hey, why'd I get downvoted? For saying I don't play video games as much as I used to?
Babel @ Sep 20th 2009 2:39PM
Aw man...
Although better than a terrible, inferior version I guess. Just.
HighFiveJesus @ Sep 20th 2009 5:53PM
They should have just not said anything at all, damn. Everyone just assumes the worst.
PSN.LOCA @ Sep 20th 2009 2:40PM
well here's my conclusion am not buying it then
360 owners should be happy
fundando @ Sep 20th 2009 3:12PM
I hear ya. I used to be interested in this game but theres no way I'm buying a shitty port.
Beatnik-(PSN:Beatnik009) @ Sep 20th 2009 2:45PM
aww
well that's too bad but i'll still play the game I guess
Night Elve @ Sep 20th 2009 2:52PM
Currently I'm saving my money for Uncharted, PES & MW2 but I'm confident SEGA is doing a good port and so far I like what I've seen about this game so probably I will eventually get this game.
CH3BURASHKA @ Sep 20th 2009 2:55PM
Huh, I thought the PS3 was the main system, the 360 the port.
jarhead906 @ Sep 20th 2009 3:04PM
I don't remember that being the case but I guess not.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Sep 20th 2009 3:07PM
thats what I was thinking too....coulda sworn I read that somewhere....
bah...fuck it...
Charlie_Six @ Sep 20th 2009 3:43PM
It seems odd that such a game would be developed for the 360 primarily. A previous article said that games made in Japan have a hard time selling a lot of copies outside of Japan. And this game seems to be too, ahem, unorthodox in style to appeal to the tastes of many North American 360 gamers.
Perhaps if the main character was a hulking male protagonist with a brooding personality about him, it would be an easier sell.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Sep 20th 2009 4:01PM
Charlie six, you meen this guy?

Charlie_Six @ Sep 20th 2009 4:39PM
Yeah, and the guy from Darksiders.
scott @ Sep 20th 2009 7:06PM
@Charlie_Six
DMC4 sold around 2.4million copies worldwide, less than 400k of those coming from Japan. The days of developers being able to cater solely to Japan are over, and if you want to do well in the West, it's a good idea to focus on the 360.
Mal F4cti0n @ Sep 20th 2009 8:58PM
Actually, this was the first that I had heard it was even coming to the PS3 at all.
But that is just me......
No Kill Tayler @ Sep 20th 2009 3:03PM
Man, trading blame is not cool.
"Why'd you create a car that runs, but looks like shit?"
"That wasn't me bro, it was that guy."
Ankur @ Sep 20th 2009 3:05PM
I don't own a ps3 but I'm sure the port will be fine, I doubt they will release a substandard port, and even if they do I don't think it will do any justice to their company name or rep.
Jrinswand @ Sep 20th 2009 3:04PM
Haha, I thought this game had already come out on the 360 and had been met with mediocre reviews. I guess that just goes to show how indifferent I am to fast-paced hand-to-hand combat involving magic and giant ethereal boots.
WINterfang @ Sep 20th 2009 3:20PM
That was Bullet Witch.
Jrinswand @ Sep 20th 2009 3:26PM
No, I actually thought it was Bayonetta. But yeah, those two games do look eerily similar. I guess Devil May Cry and all of it's ripoffs just aren't my thing. I know that may sound weird coming from a dude who just said that one of the only games he's been playing for the past month or so is God of War, but to me there is a definite distinction to be made between God of War and Devil May Cry. The former is all about brutal hand-to-hand combat and the latter has much more shooting and emo Japanese goth-glam stylings.
WINterfang @ Sep 20th 2009 4:04PM
I don't agree with your opinion but I respect you for it.
Sentox6 @ Sep 20th 2009 7:32PM
See, I feel quite differently about DMC vs GoW. GoW is pretty elementary by comparison; heavy attack, light attack, and there's most of the game. It's brutal, but relatively dumb. Combat in DMC is quantifiably deeper and gives you so many more options.
And to be fair, guns aren't that big of a deal. Their effectiveness is a lot lower in DMC4, but even in DMC3, they really just function as an extension of melee. It's definitely not a shooting game.
mahouneko @ Sep 20th 2009 11:20PM
@Winterfang:
Who the hell are you and what have you done with the Winterfang that we all know and despise/love?
Spike941 @ Sep 20th 2009 3:10PM
Just just went from a must-buy to a not-even-going-to-look-at-it. Way to fuck things up, Platinum. Don't think I'll ever buy any one of your games ever again either.
Jrinswand @ Sep 20th 2009 3:16PM
Wow. You're angry. Seems to me that you're the kinda guy that doesn't need to be playing games like MadWorld.
