Sega has seemingly forgotten that Tokyo Game Show hasn't started yet, by releasing a brand new trailer for its upcoming Resonance of Fate (aka End of Eternity in Japan). Tri-Ace is breaking the JRPG norm by creating a trailer that isn't entirely comprised of CG cutscenes. There is a lot of gameplay footage here -- and as noted earlier, it's bizarre.
Resonance of Fate creates a rather distinct look for itself by giving its main characters guns, and moves that would make Chow Yun-Fat jealous. It's entirely over-the-top, and gives the game an original feel missing from tri-Ace's previousworks. It'll be interesting to see if Japanese gamers will pry themselves away from Final Fantasy XIII long enough to give this game a fair shake.
I dunno man, I dunno. What you call "same ol'", I've yet to see any American devs top. Though, with the JRPGs I've played, I don't see how any of their stories can be considered "same ol'".
Well, propheta is probably referring to the cliche storyline a lot of JRPGS have; A young cast of heroes with outrageous hairstyles have to save the world from some ultimate evil. It lacks the realism and deeper running themes gamers these days crave from their next-gen games...
Still, there are a lot of great RPG's out there, depends on what you like and if you can tolerate it.
I think it's because there is a novel called 'End of Eternity' (that it pays homage to) so that's why they had to change it. Similar to "What A Wonderful World"/"The World Ends With You"
My concern is that the battles seem to take five minutes each. I really hope that isn't the case in the full game, because that would get really tedious really quickly.
My concern about the battle scenes were similar. Some of the attacks kind of looked like watching the spirit-things being summoned in FF7/FF8. Umm, Espers I believe were their name? Where the cutscenes were sometimes an unavoidable 60-90 second delay from the action.
I couldn't help but notice the characters jumping and twisting around the air a lot but wondering if there was a person controlling their movements of if they were pre-scripted? Any ideas? I'm leaning towards pre-scripted which bites. It also seemed the characters where somewhat magically jumping again during mid-fight. Almost as if jumping off of air dragon ball z style. I hate fake-physics in games. It takes away from the realism but adds fantasy so I guess its an ok trade off??
ya, I really can't get into these games anymore if the battles are all the same. The FF formula was acceptable back then, but it's growing more and more tired for me. Why can't they just take these story-driven, exploration based RPG's and replace the battles with Final Fantasy Tactics missions?
Actually, that was gameplay or a mockup of gameplay (No scripted events). The whole thing is running on what's roughly a souped up version of the game engine used in Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles for the PS3, which was a pretty beautiful and fluid looking game for an anime franchise.
I've been waiting to see what Tri-Ace would do with the new engine, since the last thing they've done in the RPG genre was .Hack//GU.
Yep....it was only a matter of time before Japan caught on to my gunplay techniques. Matrix you say? Wanted you say? Spfff...as if they didn't copy me. Now all they need is my nonstop banter and obscure television knowledge and they'll be set.
I never understood how you had enough time for obscure television shows with all the shenanigans you're up to. By shenanigans I mean slicing people in half
In the future we have a device called DVR "Digital Video Recorder". It's a really great because it records all your television shows for me.
Oh yeah, and in the future, there's these things called "Reruns". Now I know you maybe asking "What's a rerun?". Well, it's a episode of a show that they show over again. Amazing!
First of all, don't advertise sites here. Second of all, I hate how people try to glorify "exotic" car crashes, especially when they're fatal. On that site, there is a picture of a fatal accident where the car got absolutely wrecked and in the corner it says "Daily HaHa". I'm sorry, but I see nothing funny about someone dying in a car accident. I'm sorry if this is a big tangent on a gaming site, but having known people that have gotten in serious accidents in a car, with some of them dying, I hate glorifying car crash videos...
Why do I feel that this came from a meeting to win market share in the U.S. "Let's appeal to stupid Americans by having guns and violence and explosions! Maybe they'll get buying their Gears of War & Halo then!"
Instead I'm afraid it'll be a really good version of Gungrave....which is not a bad thing.
It looks like it could be really awesome but at the same time I'm concerned that the battles involve doing the same five movesets over and over and over and over again. Which could be a real yawner.
The way the characters are running around makes me think of Lost Odyssey for some reason. I can't wait for this!!! Next year is gonna kick ass for RPG fans on all sides of the console war!!!!!

I get the feeling that this may be the last push before JRPGs go extinct with the way things are going. If this is how my love of gaming is going to end, I wouldn't have it any other way. JRPGs FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tri-Ace threw away all the kudos they earned with Valkyrie Profile thanks to those two shitty rpg's. I think this one has a little more potential though.
This generation has been pretty bad for rpg-fans like me anyway. I'm still waiting for that one killer app, maybe FFXIII, but even that one isn't a sure thing. Reaaaaaally hoping Atlus announces a new Shin Megami Tensei game for a this gen. console soon.
