Direct2Drive's anniversary sale continues with $5 RPGs and MMOs
Digital retailer Direct2Drive continues its seemingly endless parade of values this week with a number of MMOs and RPGs which you can acquire for a single five-dollar bill. These titles include Neverwinter Nights 2, EVE Online, Age of Conan and Assassin's Creed Director's Cut. Well, fine -- that last one isn't exactly an RPG, unless what the director cut from the original version was turn-based random encounters.
If you're not a fan of playing roles, you'll be happy to know that D2D has kept a number of the previous weeks' deals alive, adding BioShock, Civilization 4, Assault on Dark Athena and many other titles to the pile of $5 games. If you're looking to expand your PC library on the cheap, it's definitely worth checking out.

Assassins Creed is definitely not an RPG.
Even at $5 I'd be careful, the PC version was horribly unoptimized and doesn't run well without a good gaming setup.
Breakerchase @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:04AM
Really? I run the game just fine all high 1680x1050 with my 2007-vintage system. I got it for only $600 too.
CaramelZappa @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:17AM
On my q6600 with an 8800gts 320mb and 2gb of ram it ran, but not fantastically. It was disappointing when even Crysis ran better and looked better.
I haven't run it again since I got my laptop (basically the same specs but 4gb of ram and more video memory)
cknblade @ Sep 22nd 2009 7:20AM
I'm running an e6600, 9800 GTX+, 2gb RAM, XP, and was able to run this at 1680 x 1050 at either high or very high (can't recall), and it runs beautifully.
rickjamess04 @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:26AM
@breakerchase:
Really? You paid $600 for Assassin's Creed...What an idio....oh wait, nevermind
splinteredvision @ Sep 21st 2009 11:38PM
Was pretty upset this week.
Especially with Grand theft auto 3 and vice city up there...along with AC...
This awful sale week needs a kanye joke to go with it.
Jose @ Sep 21st 2009 11:48PM
Picked up NWN2 and an Expansion. It's always nice when the GB : $ ratio > 1.
ballistic3188 @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:39AM
really huh i was checking it out didn't see where to get the orginal game for 5 dollars.
Jigga @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:56PM
I got the full game for $5 too, but it looks like they removed it now. I wonder if it was a mistake?
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:03PM
@ballistic3188,
Are you somewhere other than the US? Because on the US promo page at least, NWN2 is the first entry: http://www.direct2drive.com/d2dturns5
sicsided @ Sep 21st 2009 11:49PM
I was really hoping for the Witcher to pop up on the RPG sale. Oh well, once I get some money, I'll pick it up.
idrumgood @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:25AM
You won't be disappointed. I've been working my way through The Witcher and it's pretty awesome.
Of course, that didn't stop me from picking up 4 of these games!
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:04PM
I will second the "you won't be disappointed" sentiments. I broke down and bought it for PC after they announced the console version had been shelved... it's an excellent game and well worth playing.
HighFiveJesus @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:05AM
Good reasons why PC gaming is alive.
RKN @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:14AM
Damn, I'd really like to have physical copies of the games on my shelf, but these are so fucking tempting!!!! : (
CaramelZappa @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:18AM
You could always burn the installers to a DVD and print out a cover?
ZaxCG2 @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:37AM
Or you could look on the bright side: You'll save yourself some shelf space!
CrabBattle @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:22AM
Anyone bought bioshock or riddick? Do they have drm or similar crap?
CaramelZappa @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:30AM
When bioshock launched it hard problems with securom, but I believe after the initial backlash they took care of it.
joeybeast @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:26AM
I had to turn firewall off to activate Bioshock.
Haven't had a problem since.
Lucho @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:32AM
I bought BioShock, I think it has SecuROM that thing, anyways....the game isn't working for me, meet the requierments but the game doesn't even load....
Damn wanted to play BioShock
ZaxCG2 @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:39AM
I usually ONLY stick to Steam, who has always given me the greatest deals, but these look very tempting. Only some of them though.
BioShock and Assassin's Creed could barely run on my computer, but that's what having a console is for.
Any other recommendations?
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:13PM
Civ IV. Best $5 you will ever spend. Neverwinter Nights 2 is an excellent RPG, and is a bit older so it should run pretty okay; it runs fine for me on a laptop. $5 is also an excellent price for Beyond Good & Evil if you somehow haven't played that game yet. Sid Meier's Pirates! is also a very engaging/addicting game. Those should keep you busy for a while :) (and run on older hardware no problem)
mezzaninex @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:59AM
Has Indigo Prophecy been $5 yet?
Gibbeynator @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:26AM
Not yet, I was kinda hoping the Fahrenheit version would be on sale too.
zombienutz @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:39AM
I am thinking about picking up the Titans Quest bundle. I have heard good things about the game, and I would love a hold over until my Diablo 3 itch can be scratched. Also, last week, I picked up STALKER and Saints Row 2. STALKER works great, but I have not tried SR2.
Gibbeynator @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:51AM
Lucky, I went to their site to get STALKER, and not only was it not on sale anymore, but it wasn't even in their database.
Pip @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:49AM
Titan Quest bundle is EASILY worth $5. I paid $20 for it on Steam and it's one of the best deals ever. The game isn't quite as good as Diablo 2, but it makes up for it with graphics that scale as high as you want, the sound and music, and even some of the bosses are amazing. The huge amount of classes and skills has had me replaying this quite a bit.
For $5, it's a freaking steal!
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:18PM
@Gibbeynator,
Can I have some of what you're smoking? Granted it's no longer $5, but it's very much there still:

Gibbeynator @ Sep 23rd 2009 7:07AM
well, it wasn't when I went to go buy it. And when it came back, it wasn't on sale anymore. It's not even on their list of last weeks games that are still on sale.
zmnatz @ Sep 23rd 2009 8:20AM
Anyone know if Titan's Quest still has a halfway decent community. I was thinking about getting it.
zombienutz @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:42PM
It will have me, which is a half-way decent community!
Maxathon @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:27AM
Am I totally irrelevant if I complain that the Mac games are excluded from this sale?
Let me just save you a sec—"Yes."
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:20PM
Unless your mac is so old you can't run parallels or boot camp i don't quite understand the complaining...
G-Anderton @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:30PM
Why is only NWN2:storm of zehir $5 and none of the other ones... they're baiting us I tells you...
Deaddy @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:46AM
I don't usually play games on PC, can someone tell me if that version of Assassin's Creed supports a control pad, and whether it runs better than the PS3 version (which ran like crap?) Thanks for any input, I've been trying to score the PS3 version on sale for $10 this week but not having any luck finding it. If the PC version is better and half the price I'm going to consider it. I would like to use my PS2 pad via USB adapter to play it if I got the PC version.
liquid @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:14AM
Assassin's Creed isn't showing on that list for me.
LinXitoW @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:19AM
I don't get why anyone would buy Eve Online there. You can get the 14-day trail for free, whilst on d2d you have to pay a 5er.
Or am i missing something?
SharpShooter @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:12AM
Buying the game gives you 30 days free...
LinXitoW @ Sep 24th 2009 3:29PM
on the d2d site it says this only includes a 14 day trail period.
Gibbeynator @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:19AM
Assassin's Creed is NOT an RPG. Grand Theft Auto is NOT an RPG. But Mass Effect is... why isn't Mass Effect on that list? I've been DESPERATELY waiting for that game to go on sale.
Dakmagi83 @ Sep 22nd 2009 7:53AM
I was wondering can you download the games more than once? I plan on doing a clean install when windows 7 comes out so I would like to know before hand.
idrumgood @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:53AM
Yes, you can install them more than once. When you add a game to your cart, you get a little thing that's like "Game Protection" or something that says you can download them whenever you like.
hfm @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:48AM
It's the Storm of Zehir expansion that's $5, not Neverwinter Nights 2 the base game.
I think I'm probably going to wait for the eventual Diamond or Platinum version that has everything included before I actually sink money into NWN2 at this point.
Jigga @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:02PM
The full NWN2 was on there and has been removed. I think there is a full version (original + expansions) already available, I remeber seeing it on Amazon a while back.
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:22PM
No, the base game is available as part of the sale too. Only in the US/Canada/Mexico however. Here's a direct link to the game's page if you're in one of those regions:
http://www.direct2drive.com/2/1431/product/Buy-Neverwinter-Nights-2-Download
I assure you it is still very much $5 in those regions.
zombienutz @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:03AM
@Gibbey That really sucks :(
@Pip Yea, I will buy TQ as soon as I get home.
PaperTiger @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:17AM
Yeah, I haven't brought anything from D2D before, but was pretty stoked to see NWN2 on that list...then gutted to see it was just the expansion...$53+ is still a bit high for me.
Caleb @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:59PM
The base Neverwinter Nights game was on there for a bit; I managed to snag it for $5 myself. But I try and go there now and get the message, "The current product you are looking for is currently not available. You will be redirected to the home page shortly or you can click here."
AoE @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:23PM
NWN2 is still available for $5 as long as you live in the US, Canada, or Mexico:
