Spike got a five-minute look at the upcoming anime Halo Legends, and (as you'll see for yourself right after the break) it's got all our favorite tropes of the genre: comically exaggerated animations, vaguely effeminate dudes and very weird-looking soups.
Of course, it's also got something else that's going to have your eyes glued to all 298 seconds: Master Chief being a total badass and kicking the living crap out of a Brute. Enjoy.
Not a huge HALO fan by any stretch. Just played, but enjoyed immensely, the first game. I am a huge anime fan though, so I support this whole heartedly :)
That reckless young guy in the group of elite, war-hardened, badasses is out to prove himself. Good thing there's a slightly more grounded young guy whom the other young guy has developed a friendly rivalry with...
As far as anime goes, the clip shown is pretty damn generic. I'm not sure which studio created this particular clip, but I'd be kind of shocked if this was the best Production I.G or Bones could do. I'd be willing to bet that this was Toei's take on the franchise, but I really have no idea. Hopefully the parts done by I.G and Bones will be of a higher quality.
(if this clip turns out to be from either of those studios, I'll be kind of sad)
im with you and all others who think this one looks god awful
i've seen some anime (im not the biggest fan) like paprika, akira, Jin Roh, ghost in the shell, 5cm per second, animatrix's, appleseed, ergo proxy, batman dark knight thing and a few others, you get the idea.
im no expert, but this one looks terrible. pokemon style but not even as good. looks really child like and poorly drawn and voiced.
i wanted something dark, gritty, stunning to look at.
Hm. I just don't like 99% of anime because it's awful. Every now and then I try to find a cool series to watch, but I'm always disappointed because they never live up to the classics like Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop.
The males didn't look androgynous, there weren't any exaggerated emotions (although I think seeing Master Chief with a big head and sweat drops would be funny if done correctly), and the animation looks great.
Chief did a lot of unrealistic jumping toward the end, but it's not different from the typical Halo match.
What sold me was the Spartan's (is it really Chief?) agility. I always imagined that considering their physical superiority to humans, they would also compliment that with a little graceful maneuvering on the battlefield, not the rigidness with which most people play the game (admittedly because of the nature of FPS controls).
The Halo novels hint at a much larger universe than what is shown in the games and it only makes sense that supplementary material like these film shorts would touch on a ranging field of characters (it's generic, but the chances of there being brash ODSTer is very good), combat situations (the Grunt executions were great for this--showing that hitting an enemy with the butt of your gun is not the only CQC move used on a battlefield), and locales.
Parts of the animation were meh (did we really have to watch the sniper rifle fall for that long) but overall I would definitely buy the dvd based on this preview.
I like it. I thought it would be some cheesy american animation (you may hate me here, but you know the japs do it the best), but instead, it had a distinctive japanese flair that I liked. reminds me a bit of traditional animation (I'm no expert here, but thats what it reminds me of).
What i didn't like was all that "fighting". I mean, i know its anime and all, but can't you make it resemble the game at least a little? When I fight brutes, I shoot, I nade, and when they get too close, I elbow them, and that usually works. It would've been nice if they had something like that in the anime, but it doesn't look like it. If this is avaliable for free streaming I'll watch it.
I think the sniper rifle falling symbolized in the ODST falling to his death. And as for the graceful movements of the SPARTAN in the clip, it makes sense that a SPARTAN would move like that because they ARE SUPERHUMAN. Not to mention, the whole basis of Nicole in DOA4 was nothing but CQC which would also support the way the SPARTAN in the clip was fighting. I could just imagine him sticking a plasma grenade and punching the brute like Nicole does.. This will definitely give SPARTANS a new appearance to the less hardcore fans of the Halo Universe.
This is what I don't understand with a lot of the arguments: if you want it to be so similar to the game (to the point where very little if any is new), then why don't you just play the game and ignore the anime?
Fact is, in a combat situation, a battle-hardened warrior would employ a lot more skills than what Chief uses in the game. This vid just showcased some of them, it's NOT claiming that Chief is the kind to throw down his gun and put up his dukes.
@ripslymemc You should note he's up against a brute chieftain, they're on a stealth mission, unfortunately a hand to hand fight with a brute like this isn't possible in Halo games yet (I'm sure at some point games will evolve to allow that).
This vid compares nothing to Bleach. Please, point out anything in that vid that seemed like something in Bleach. Other than the smooth animation that is.
As I already stated, there was no exaggerated emotions, and the characters look realistic.
Why is that? From this I can only gather that you don't care for it and watch a butt load of Spike. Or you absolutely loved the 5 min clip but can't get Spike in your area.
I get Spike but the way they aired Afro Samurai it kind of pissed me off. My DVR would record it but either they ran a show too long and it didnt record the whole episode or they didnt air it at all at the time slot.
