We were all set to write a dismissive post about the video (after the break) of fanmade Monkey Island 2 environments in CryEngine -- "Hey, wonder what Monkey Island 2 would look like if it had all the life sucked out of it?" We don't have anything against loneclone, the modder who created the project -- we just assumed that the remake would take all the personality and quirk out, and replace it with hyperrealistic lighting effects.
But we can't snark about it, because loneclone completely nailed it. It looks pretty much exactly like the original, but in 3D. You can see art comparisons at the modder's site.
I am all for efforts to do awesome stuff like this. It's the right meld of realistic effects and a cartoonish landscape all wrapped up in HD. Now once again, after countless years the question can be asked... "Can your computer handle the awesome that is Monkey Island?"
sadly, no. my computer split in to as soon as it saw the sign through the water. then it just lagged like none other. wicked awesome though. very impressive that he was able to capture the cartoon style in such a realistic game. must have taken a lot of time. and to those saying it would be weird to play in FPS, it would be possible, with a lot of work, to play it like a normal MI game. And with even less work, like the ToMI games. Plus, we'd get to see a sweet Guybrush skin for Crysis. This is doable. well, for the people who can play Crysis at moderate settings. Which isn't me.
I think that was incredible, looked amazingly faithful to the original while still looking, well, amazing. Add a Guybrush Threepwood character skin and you have something truly incredible.
I'm dreaming this is the must buy new Monkey Island game that I'm always waiting for.
As a third person (little bit of) action-adventure it would do well on consoles.
Those nostalgic grandpas who killed adventure games with there want of 2D landscapes can go into a retirement home. The adventure game should have evolved, just like every other genre.
They did try to evolve it with Money Island 4.. remember its awesome 3D graphics and involving control scheme that made the game even more fun? Oh wait, nope.
Honestly though, I have nothing against evolving adventure games in theory. It's just that so far every attempt to do so hasn't come up with the goods.
WoW Telltale should give htis guy a ring. Because if it's one thing their games are pretty FAIL at is MOOD and lighting. It all looks made of silly putty And this guys gives the game the right lighting and atmosphere.
TellTale needs to keep it small enough for download. The above map, representing one part of MI2, is probably bigger than the entire Tales Season 1. Mood lighting would be too big and out of the scope of their engine.
That said, Monkey Island doesn't lend well to 3D. The demo nailed the art style, but the characters will likely suffer under CryEngine 2. MI is best experienced in animated form like MI3.
