NCSoft promises at least one major Aion update every year
Though NCSoft's winged MMO Aion doesn't go live until tomorrow (or Friday for Europeans), the developer is already promising additional content for the title. Speaking to VG247, NCSoft's Christian-Peter Heimbach explained, "there will be at least one major update a year," and later added "there will be free content updates for all players, and we're looking then at how big the major updates will be."
It's awfully presumptive for an MMO developer to assume its game will still be alive and kicking one year after its launch date -- however, with a strong base of 400,000 pre-orderers, it seems unlikely that Aion will hastily go the way of Auto Assault.

Maybe they should add more servers so I can actually play the early access I pre-ordered for.

monkeyzamm @ Sep 21st 2009 6:42PM
Thats great and all but i really want them to work on Blade and Soul or w/e the PS3 MMO was supposed to be

The way of Auto Assault? Or what of Tabula Rasa? Or now Dungeon Runners?
Thats three major failures in two years, two of them being run around one year. NCSoft's track record isn't that good.

They're going "We still have City of Heroes and Guild Wars!"
And I did re-up with a time card for I16. Won't buy another after this one expires, but that's more for financial reasons.

city of heroes/villans, guild wars, lineage 2. they have been around for 5 years and still going strong. NCsoft may not be as big here in the US, (and thats mainly because of wow) but they are pretty huge everywhere else in the world.

Exactly.

I'll buy this once I rig up my system to run it.

I'm not particularly engaged with the MMo community, but is anything all that impressive about one major update per year?
Benjamin T.E. @ Sep 21st 2009 7:28PM
When they say "one MAJOR update per year", they're sort of implying there will be more than one less-major update per year.... hopefully.
Spookie @ Sep 21st 2009 7:51PM
One does seem rather a small amount tbh. I'm sure at some point in the past Warcraft saw three major patches. I know for sure it's seen two this year. Not sure on the other MMOs but I'm sure Conans seen a few too.

Did I completely miss the Aion hype train? I heard the name being said here and there, but I didn't think there was THIS much interest. What's so cool about it?
Obi-Habby @ Sep 21st 2009 9:36PM
You can fly. No seriously, that's what all the hype is about.
Benjamin T.E. @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:22PM
The graphics seem pretty eyeball-melting, plus, yeah, you can fly as one of the classes.
mocax @ Sep 21st 2009 11:59PM
i ordered it so i can show off my wings in guild wars.... >.>
rather expensive set of wings, i might say....
