The new motion controllers for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are likely to make big appearances at this year's Tokyo Game Show. While both Microsoft and Sony are attempting to take away some of Nintendo's mindshare with its new controllers, Square Enix head Yoichi Wada believes neither company will be truly successful. "Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small," Wada told the Financial Times.
Wada also believes that the three platforms will start looking more like each other by the year 2011, when he believes Nintendo will release the fabled successor of the Wii. The system will add features found on the PS3/360, and may also introduce a brand new controller. It'll certainly be interesting to see what moves consumers when an HD Nintendo system exists concurrently with motion-enabled Microsoft and Sony systems.

Why would the wii suddenly integrate features from the ps3/360, given that it's original target was the so-called "casual gamer" who's not into anything complicated or high-end HD graphics?

Well, when they released the Wii HDTV market penetration was relatively low... in 2011 I would think it will be high enough that HD is an absolute must. Most of the multimedia stuff I think they will stay away from, but I could be wrong.
They will try to keep it all simple like though, most people seem to like that

Perhaps they don't quite mean improved graphical playback, the Wii is severely lacking in online multiplayer aspects. And since piracy is so high on the Wii, driving away even more decent titles that aren't shovelware from the platform, they may be looking to make a new console with more secure, 360/PS3-like anti-piracy measures.
Also, making online more integrated would mean anyone who does modify their console would bar them from accessing internet features. It's an added deterrent which the Wii just does not provide at the moment. If Nintendo is looking to up their graphical power, it would also attract more cross-platform games from 360/PS3, not these ground-up remakes of titles which are just awful. By having more cross-platform titles, they can appeal to the core gamer market while still appealing to casuals with stuff like Wii Fit.

If a new Wii is released I'd pick it up along with the old Wii which would be even cheaper at that point.
Here's an idea - have a standard controller in the box so game developers won't have to worry about losing sales if they don't want a forced remote gimmic shadowing over their game.

But the new controller can work fine without motion controls. Look at Brawl, or Kart if you run it with the Wiimote N' Nunchuk. Fact is that combo can do fine on its own, and nobody's being forced to do anything
Letting the 3rd parties take the easy way out, like Sony and Microsoft are, is only going to hurt the motion itself.

What temporal rift did you walk through? More importantly, do people speak english there? While I would love to see a unified gaming console format from all three companies, it will never happen. I don't think Nintendo is worried about Sony's or Microsoft's motion controllers. Sony and Microsoft are now trying to cash in on the casual gaming market that Nintendo created with the introduction of an easy to use motion controller. While Sony and Microsoft may be successful with their take on motion controls, I personally will not be buying them. After playing games for 30 years, I still prefer to use a standard controller. This may explain why I only have 2 Wii games versus the hundreds of games I have on the other systems.

The worst part is that Nintendo is implementing region-locks with the DSi. I personally think that it's a bone-headed decision for Nintendo to do. The sad thing is that this will only encourage the continued growth of R4 flashcarts and DS-related piracy as a result of such bone-headed moves.

Wii Momentum is in a decline...if the price cut ads are real they will not help that much i don't think...and its their fault...Nintendo went the wrong way this time....
the PS2 sold 140 million units by year 7.....how did they do this? they went after the GAMERS first and THEN worked in the Casual gamers.....what does Nintendo do? go ass backwards....targeting the Casual market first and THEN trying to make up for it and get the gamers afterwards....but gamers aren't as 4giving....so while the Wii has cruised it way thru this first few years selling 40-50 Million, they have pretty much saturated the market and I honestly don't see them making it to 100Million units sold before they release another system...and lifetime sales of the Wii DAMN sure wont hit 150 Million...
so I'm going to side with him and say that a New Nintendo console will be out by 2011....2012 at the latest....

You know, you're the first person I've seen make that argument about the PS2 getting where it was as fast as it did.
Most sites claim, "The Wii is now outselling what the PS2 sold in it's first 5 years!" I look such things and can't help but be baffled. In the time it's been out it's sold over 140m units, and that doesn't even count that it's been selling really poorly this past year or two because of all the new consoles. That 140m really is from the first 6-7 years.
Just makes you stop and think about how amazingly well the PS1 and PS2 sold during their first few years on the market.
About the "Wii HD". I wouldn't be too surprised. Every other generation was about 5-6 years long with consoles costing $200-300 at launch. Nintendo certainly had the price factor on their side this generation, so if they can release another walllet-friendly console and convince people it's worth the upgrade by including a new controller scheme, why wouldn't they?

Fact is what I said about the Wii starting off going at the Causul market is true...and because of that Sony & MS WILL pass them This Generation.....rest assured they wont hold onto that #1 spot for long...Metroid, Another Mario, a New Zelda game, and even Kid Icarus cant keep them in #1....them release colors MIGHT help slow down the decline of sales a lot more than this price drop.....as people that have a Wii already aren't going to buy another simply because it dropped $50....more people will buy another one if there is another color tho...

You realize it would be quite difficult for Microsoft to pass up Nintendo at this point, even if Nintendo stopped selling Wiis tomorrow. That's a 20 million unit gap, my friend. Microsoft would have to pull out something very significant to change momentum like that
And moving in later to pursue the core gamer isn't such a bad idea. As the system ages, it's docket for the core gamer only grows, especially as Nintendo begins to pick up some of the key 3rd party exclusives (especially in Japan, like MH3 and DQX), so the value of the system will only grow in the core gamers' eyes, and grow to a tipping-point of mass adoption.
And if all reports are true, Nintendo has a vast back stockpile of these things piling up. 2.4 million a month produced for the world, but nowhere near that amount sold. They're going into this holiday season with claws out, and we could see something quite amazing, even without this rumored price-drop of theirs.

Going into this holiday with claws out?!? What does Nintendo have that looks remotely interesting this year? Nintendo might have a stockpile of Wii's ready for the holiday season but every store I've been to lately also has a stockpile of them just sitting there also while they maybe have 2 or 3 360's and PS3's. Pretty much everyone I know with a Wii either never plays it anymore or sold it a while ago. I think Nintendo will be in for a surprise with the better bundles coming from sony and ms and the fact that the fad is finally dying.

The reason I am saying the PS3 and 360 will outsell the Wii is because at its current rate Nintendo will bring out a new system in 2011...halting sales of the Wii.....meanwhile the 360 and PS3 will STILL be on the market till at LEAST 2015...getting million and million more in sales....hell the PS3 may still be one of the best selling BD players for the next 2-4 years until GOOD players come down below $150....thats something else that the PS3 has going for it...
Sure MS and Sony will have new systems out by 2013...2012 at the earliest but I'm fairly certain they PS3 and 360 will continue to sell well....much like the PS2 has managed to sell millions after the PS3 came out..

True that they only really have one game, in the West, at least, that's really going to move anything (but it should be quite handy itself), while in Japan they have three for the season, but it's the combination of that game and the mass buildup that should see them through quite well
Their second wave of top-tier software doesn't really start till next year, but this holiday season is going to be huge for them, with or without a price-drop
And why would the 360 and PS3 keep selling after their successors were introduced, but the Wii would not? Nintendo has a history of supporting their winning platforms well after the introduction of their successors, if you look to the GBA, or the original GB/GBC, or back to the SNES and NES.

So its not wishful thinking? You guys really believe the HD consoles can overtake the wii.. Thats completely insane.
Didn't a lot of people say the it would happen in 2006, 2007, 2008, then 2009. But now this time its for real?
Not only would the wii have to completely stop selling there would have to be huge and permanent increase of interest in the other 2 consoles..
Where is this huge surge of interest in the 360 and ps3 going to come from?
More price cuts? Well it didn't work for the 360 so far.

didn't you read my reasons?? I SERIOUSLY think the Wii will be off the market in 2011....meaning it wont be selling anymore...and if its off before it hits that 100 Million mark then damn straight it can be rolled over....
Huge surge for PS3 or 360 isnt needed... as they will continue to coast as they have
but the PS3 will get a few...in the Release of FF13(Exclusive in Japan), Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Resistance 3, inFamous 2, Twisted Metal 5 and a few others...
360 may jump some units during Halo:Reach...and DAMN sure if They Release Halo 4 on the 360...

If your reasoning for the PS360 staying in production and on the market is games, I kind of fail to understand why the Wii can't do the same though. 2010 is looking fine for it, and we don't even know what's happening in 2011. Hell Bethesda is announcing a Wii game, Project Sora, the big three...
And plus, new console doesn't mean halted production or sales. Look at the PS2, that thing's still soldiering on. Even if sales slow for the Wii, they certainly won't stop.
P.S. This console has had more franchise titles than any other Nintendo console so far, I say they went after everyone still.

I agree with him on all counts, actually. Long have i advocated the idea that the next Wii will come in 2011, but i believe the next Xbox will come by then too. For Wada's two points are related. It's because Microsoft and Sony's motion controls will have minimal impact as they are that they'll be forced to release new hardware sooner than they would like, or persistently remain in Nintendo's shadow
It's not in Nintendo's interests to string the Wii out longer than its natural life-span. They have to keep things fresh, and i don't see them being able to do that with Wii alone longer than a couple more years (which should be sustained by new Zelda, project Sora, and yes, Wii Vitality)
And we've seen it from all the core devs close to Microsoft that they are hesitant to use Natal, which will slow Natal's start, which will lead to a downward spiral in the device's popularity, at least, unless Microsoft does something between now and then to make the device universal (though not necessarily mandatory)
Sony still hasn't shown how they plan to use the device beyond their exclusive software. The idea of patching the control into existing games that they put forth is probably one of the worst ideas out there. Shoe-horning has been proven to be the wrong direction time and again on Wii, and i doubt it will win out on PlayStation 3.

Great points Khan.
I expect Wii 2 to be the what the SNES was to the NES.
The Wii has been somewhat of NES in and of itself, the way in came into a pretty stale market (growth wise) and completely changed the game (no pun intended) as far as video games were concerned. With massive success from the NES, Nintendo didn't want to mess with the formula too much, and just released a "better NES" in the Super NES.
The difference I do see them making this time around though is with Wii 2 (and please believe it'll be "Wii" something, in order to NOT deter the consumer away from such a popular brand) is that it will be backwards compatible heavy with Wii, not just in software. Wii remotes and motion pluses will work side by side with whatever all inclusive remotes Wii 2 puts out, etc.

I agree with both of you and I think that with Nintendo releasing a system at 300 dollars when the world economy will be in an upward swing, can boost sales up to something as high as 180 million by the time the PS4 hits the streets.
The key component everyone is overlooking is the online support. Wii2 MUST be able to match the PS3's PSN. If you look at the phone market and gaming market, everything is pushing to a sense of community all connected by the internet. Nintendo needs to put out the DS2 at the same time and have a way that you can take your Wii experience with you on the road. They need to be connected.

Wii HD will not be that big of an upgrade but I think that it will adapt more of the hard core gamers. Nintendo wants to apply the handheld model to the console market, meaning that every 2-3 years there will be a Wii revision. The first will be the Wii HD
I think that with this revision you with have the same chip architecture but faster maybe 1 to 2 ghz cpu and 400 mhz gpu with 256 megs of ram.in order to render wii games at HD resolutions which is all this will be. There wont be games specifically made for wii HD but there could be patches downloaded to make current and future wii games look better on wii hd such as texture packs. In terms of the controller wii hd will have a wii-mote with integrated wii plus. Wii HD will aesthetically smaller and more premium and feel very sold we may all so get a new classic controller that doesn't have to be tethered and will be completely wireless so we could loose the GC ports but may retain one GC memory card slot. Also Wii HD will launch at 249.00 if the ps3 and 360 are still at 299 but they may not be so we could see all three at 199.00.
