Behind the scenes at Joystiq, we have a lot of news we want to get to every day, and some stories just don't make the cut. We just want to take a moment to apologize to whatever story gets bumped so we can write about this particular item. If you're in anyway newsworthy at all it must come as quite a shock. But trust us, it's not you ... it's us.
So, after the break, you'll find a video of a guy who made a mod that replaces the sound effects of Half-Life 2 with ones he made with his own voice. It's completely unimportant and utterly magical.
I'd certainly agree that Natepack is funnier/more entertaining, but I'd imagine it would get irritating more quickly, as well. This one feels less like it's meant to be funny and more like it's meant to recreate (in most cases) the sounds with a human voice.
I'd like to see a mod that uses the sounds from this one and makes all weapon models invisible, so you could totally have a kids playing guns out in the back yard kind of feel, except for all the bleeding and the killing.
I think Natepack just goes about it a bit differently than this. Natepack is a lot sillier than this, and can provide more laughs, but I find this to be a far more impressive display of a human's ability to recreate sound effects. Just about every noise has it's own sound (Natepack rehashes some, I noticed from the videos posted earlier) and it's really not all silly. Sure, recreating the sounds in a serious FPS like this with your own voice is silly no matter how you slice it, but this guy seems more "professional" and more interesting than Natepack, although it lacks "lolz."
I remember a version of the golf game Links where you could add your own commentary sounds so I added a bunch of quotes from 'Happy Gilmore'. Nothing like missing a putt and hearing "suck my white ass, ball!"
