FireCore console pre-loaded with Genesis games, plays carts
We don't do usually cover plug-and-play consoles, but this one was too cool to pass up. While Innex and AtGames' Firecore Classic Console is pre-loaded with 30 Genesis games like Sonic and Knuckles and Ecco the Dolphin, it can also play all your old Genesis carts. We're not sure where all it's available, though you can find it on Buy.com right now for $50. The console also supports wireless Firecore gamepads, though you'll have to buy them separately, and newly developed "Truecolor" games.
Innex is also releasing a very cool portable system with 20 Genesis games playable on a 2.4-inch LCD screen. You can get a look at it right after the break.

You kiss your mother with that mouth?
Xoonaka @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:36PM
Seems like this is some kind of illegal product... any word on if this stuff is approved or licensed by Sega?
Jason V @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:43PM
Seriously? Did you even read the press release?
Kyammi @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:49PM
@Jason V
wtf are you talking about? what press release?
If whoever made these Genesis games that come preloaded isn't being paid licensing fees, it's illegal. There have been a lot of illegal products like this, some even sold in retail, and usually the makers get caught, get fined millions of dollars, and get sent to jail.
Malkmus @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:55PM
From the press release (found by clicking the source):
"SEGA granted AtGames the exclusive right to sell selected SEGA software products for SEGA's proprietary platforms (e.g., SEGA Master System, SEGA GAME GEAR, SEGA GENESIS (MEGA DRIVE) System, SEGA SATURN System, SEGA 32X, SEGA CD and SEGA Dreamcast System) bundled together with an emulator for these SEGA proprietary platforms to original equipment manufacturers, chip makers and other product manufacturers in Greater China. In turn, these original equipment manufacturers, chip makers and other product manufacturers will incorporate these bundles into products for sale throughout the world."
Xoonaka @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:58PM
Hm... that source button is so tiny and unassuming... hard to notice sometimes. Thanks! I do wonder why they don't have some sort of "Sega Licensed Product" seal or something on the box though.
Shimrra @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:38PM
I dont think the sega genesis is that expensive on eBay or Craiglist. What is going to cost you is finding the games but if you are a fan of these older games wouldnt it be better just to own the actual unit. If you want these cheap knock offs then just cfw your psp or iphone.
Halo Pony @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:41PM
They got Crackdown on that tiny little knockoff system?
I'll take two!
BenLX @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:44PM
Just chip an Xbox and play all the SNES, NES, TG16, CPS, NeoGeo, Amiga, GBA, N64, Genesis etc. games for free.
GoldN @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:53PM
Why would some one want to waste time and effort chipping an Xbox when one could much more easily download emulators and torrent all of the games on each system?
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:57PM
It would make far more sense to buy a netbook and use emulators. Wireless controllers, unlimited selection, vga out, etc.
RKN @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:39PM
It is amazing that now we can fit the entire library of NES, SNES, Genesis and Game Boy games onto the 160gb HDD of most netbooks.
kojo87 @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:43PM
you again? can't you at least stick to Engadget?

The Hyperkin Sega Genesis rerelease is better IMO. It looks like Sonic, has built in games, and it's licensed by Sega.
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:03PM
The Gen Core looks dumb (It looks like Sonic's head? Who, but kids, would care about that?), but the Gen Mobile looks sweet. A total rebirth of the Nomad. 6-button controls and cartirdge slot (unlike FireCore's 3-button controls and only built-in games) as well as a rechargable battery (FireCore uses 3 AAAs).
juangrande386 @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:48PM
i can have every genesis game on my psp or dsi or i could just play my real genesis or nomad
Misanthropic Gamer @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:50PM
Or, you could just use an emulator...
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:13PM
Or a Sega genesis.
Haon @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:55PM
Last time I saw him was at autoblog.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:56PM
Looks awesome, but no 6-button layout? Then again, if they chose the included games, I guess that's been sidestepped.
Pull one of these out at a game con and watch a small crowd of gadget hipsters go crazy guessing what it is!
Roger @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:00PM
I can get those things with even more packed in at the flea market a couple miles away.
They look kinda crappy but have a ton of roms built in for the NES.
charlie b. @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:55PM
maybe so, but i guarantee they don't have Streets of Rage on them.
Nate Addison @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:07PM
Repeat this process with SNES and come talk to me...until then, leave me alone. And by SNES I mean Super Mario RPG:LOTSS, Tetris Attack, Rock N' Roll Racing, Kirby Superstar and the like.
Not THAT Matt @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:03PM
Nate,
It was a miracle that Nintendo got Square Enix to license SMRPG for the Wii store, so good luck with getting them to license it for anything else EVER.
Bradwart @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:09PM
Umm, actual Genesis hardware is less than 50 bucks on eBay...
CH3BURASHKA @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:12PM
A PlayNTrade recently moved into a local strip mall, and after seeing the faux Genesises and NES/SNES boxes, I've been tempted to get them and play the games of the yesterdecades. However, I then remember that they are still take up a bunch of space, as would the cartridges, and I'd be better off getting an emulator.
ToadStoolPorridge (PSN: tennispro_99) @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:20PM
I've already said it on joystiq, but I'll say it again; I can't stand people glorifying car accidents, whether they're with exotic cars or not. A lot of those crashes are fatal, and there should be nothing entertaining or funny about someone dying in a car crash. I'm sure if you knew the person in those cars then those videos wouldn't be so cool anymore...
under13warrior @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:21PM
Or you could buy the genesis collection for 30 bucks.
Reaper man @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:25PM
did anyone else notice that the SPU accuracy on the handheld is piss poor? I can shit more accurate Genesis sounds than this...
Sturat @ Sep 22nd 2009 7:20PM
Yeah, it's really weird how some parts of the music aren't in the same key as the rest!
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:30PM
I'm tempted to buy this...even though I know... it would be a waste of money...
hmm...

SAYYY-GAHHH
mrtiggles @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:51PM
Buy a Sega Nomad, sadly it takes more batteries but you connect to your tv and connect a controler to it.
DarthDavid @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:39PM
With all the shmups the genesis has, we get Arrow Flash.........No Thunderforce, no M.U.S.H.A., no Gaiares....I would've been happy with Whip Rush for God's sakes.
Duke @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:43PM
So, this is what Alienware was teasing right?
ecco6t9 @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:06PM
The same 20 crappy Genesis games that Sega always whores out first. Where's the real games? Sonic 1,2,3? Sonic & Knuckles is only half a game.
AmishPhysicist @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:12PM
These really need wireless controllers. I wish there was a good solution for playing snes wirelessly. Being tethered is not something I get nostalgic about.
Samuel McConnell @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:19PM
My GOD, that's the worst Genesis sound emulation I've ever heard.
Bradwart @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:30PM
That handheld looks like crap. If you're willing to spend the cash, pick up a Sega Nomad instead. Sure, it's huge and sucks batteries like few others, but it's worth it.
Entity @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:31PM
Sound emulation is still poor, but not as poor as their previous model. Just search for 'blaze mega drive' on Youtube.
Stemun @ Sep 22nd 2009 6:34PM
The UK version of these units has been available for quite awhile & its got proper Sega Megadrive (or Genesis for you lot) branding on the box.
I bought one soon as the store where i work got one in but took it back the next day.
The games don't all run at full speed, the sound skips sometimes, sprites freeze, colours look off, pads are so poorly made the buttons barely push... I could go on :-(
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Sep 22nd 2009 7:22PM
I'm playing genesis collection now. I think I'll stick to that.
AwesomeTown @ Sep 22nd 2009 8:03PM
Tempting, very tempting.
Sly (Now with less shake, more bake!) @ Sep 22nd 2009 8:59PM
in regards to the handheld, wouldn't it just be easier to hack a PSP and have a ton of other systems' games, not just genesis?
phuink @ Sep 22nd 2009 9:24PM
PHANTASY STAR IV
CaramelZappa @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:01PM
Neat, but I still have my Sega Genesis. My first console.
Husher @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:38PM
the console looks shocked.
O.O
motang @ Sep 23rd 2009 12:11AM
Hmm...Interesting, I might get it.
Steve @ Sep 23rd 2009 8:26AM
Wii Homebrew channel and emulators. Full wireless controller support and way more than 20 games. Genesis, SNES, NES and more!
