XBLA Summer of Arcade sales grow 200%
Microsoft had a good summer, according to the company's summary of Xbox Live events. 1 vs. 100 reached nearly 3 million gamers during its beta season by Microsoft's estimates, and the Summer of Arcade Xbox Live Arcade promotion enjoyed a reported 200 percent growth in revenue over last year's sales.
While Microsoft has already relished in Metroidvania success, a press release claims that Trials HD and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 also performed well in first-week sales; and both titles join Shadow Complex in the top five bestselling week-one XBLA games of all time. Sales were no doubt boosted by a cloudy economy that kept folks indoors and looking for inexpensive entertainment. Microsoft capitalized, too, by raising the average price of its Summer of Arcade titles.
During last year's promotion, three of the five Summer of Arcade games were priced at $10, but this year, only two of the five were $10 -- the other three costing $15 apiece. (It's unclear if Microsoft counts Battlefield 1943's sales toward revenue growth; the $15 title was not technically part of Summer of Arcade this year.)
Microsoft also saw success in its bold, new free entertainment department. 1 vs. 100 averaged more than half a million users during each of the game show's live sessions. According to Microsoft, the game's near "three-million" downloads within its 13-week availability places 1 vs. 100 within the top ten downloads in Xbox Live history. If we've learned anything on this gloomy fall morning, it's that people like summer gaming and Microsoft has way too many "top" lists cluttering up its offices.

It helps that most of the "quality" titles are in the 800 to 1200 point range.
Bastards.
WWFMankind @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:11AM
I got all of them and I'm still waiting on my *free* 800 points...

Kotaku is not as good as Joystiq, imo. I switched over to here years ago and never looked back. Well, that's not entirely true. I have their news feed on my iGoogle page. One reason I like Joystiq better is that I love the family of sister sites. Autoblog, AutoblogGreen, Joystiq I read religiously. Plus their iPhone support is pretty cool, but not perfect. Can't say the same for Kotaku. Their iPhone site sux bawls.
Windmill @ Sep 23rd 2009 9:07AM
Why not just visit both Joystiq and Kotaku? I have Joystiq, Kotaku and Destructoid in my feeds. I mean, why not? They often post different news stories to each other.
I find Joystiq is slower on the whole to get news up, but I really appreciate how they have xbox/playstation/nintendo feeds, because I only can afford a playstation and a DS, so I can just check out the news relevant to what I own quickly. Destructoid often has indie news neither of the two get, and kotaku has a lot of interesting random crap on it. Plus, for the same news stories, you can get different takes on it.
I mean each has their own place?
Bradwart @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:12AM
So, how do they stack up against this summers PSN releases sales-wise? Fat Princess, BF1943, FFVII, etc. If that last one is included, my money is on Sony.
Swagman @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:18AM
Why do people like you waste everyone's time trolling online forums?
It would seem to me your time would be better spent actually enjoying the games you've purchased on your favorite system, than trying to harsh on someone else mellow, because you can't live with the fact that Xbox outsells Playstation on just about everything imaginable.
I swear, if more Playstation owners would actually play Playstation games instead of trying to rain on everyone else parade, then Sony would be making a lot more money than they are now.
Bradwart @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:30AM
How is that trolling? I ask a valid question and get flamed for it?
Perhaps my time would be better spent on Kotaku instead of the train-wreck Joystiq has become.
+SAM+ @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:31AM
Ha ha, your comment fails like the PS3's launch.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:33AM
I wasn't aware Kotaku was never a trainwreck
Temidien @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:52AM
"Perhaps my time would be better spent on Kotaku instead of the train-wreck Joystiq has become."
How is insulting the website you're currently commenting on and advertising a competing site not trolling?
ybfelix @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:43AM
IMHO Kotaku's(and all gawker subsidiaries) comment system is messed up. "Featured", "Starred", yeah..
ChomskyKnows @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:22PM
two words dickhead: Shadow Complex. now go fuck yourself.
Markez @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:17PM
Kotaku is a dump and full of morons, you should head over there and not comment here anymore.
Bradwart @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:24PM
Shadow Complex? Why would I want to play a Metroid knockoff? I'd rather pop in the real thing.
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:30PM
I love reading the Kotaku hate here. The general readership of Joystiq seems barely literate and most of the stories are reposts of stuff that was in the gaming subReddit two days ago.
I'm not saying Kotaku is good or anything, but the level of discourse here is woeful; significantly worse than it was in the past, and it's funny to read people bashing another game site for the same level of retardedness that often appears here.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:39PM
Kotaku isn't all wretched - honestly, the fanbase sometimes seems more stable than on our side of the fence (though I love all of you guys and girls too much!). However, the editors infuriate me, especially Crybaby Crecente. The militant disemvoweling is a major turn-off also.
Swagman @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:12AM
Groovy. Between Splosion Man, Trails and Shadow Complex, I know I had a lot more fun this summer than last. And even though it was not officially part of the Summer of Arcade, Secret of Monkey Island contributed to the summertime fun, as well.
8complex @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:15AM
Sale during the summer or not, Microsoft needs to start understanding what depreciation is. The Crackdown 'Gettin Busy' pack should be free by now, or at least hella cheap. $10 for a game-addon that is 2.5 years old is just freaking lame.
Petebot330 @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:26AM
Right you can get Crackdown for like $10 now!
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:29AM
Wow, when you can get the whole game for less than the add-on that's sad. We're talking about Microsoft here though, I'm still surprised they even let Bungie make map packs free after the first couple months.
Chibi Chaingun - blackhivemedia.com @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:41AM
As much as I like free stuff, you don't have to be a genius to know that making everything that is old suddenly one day free will hurt initial sales of any DLC and eventually kill the market.
8complex @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:20PM
Agreed, but leaving it the same value for the lifespan of it's existence is just stupid. If you want people to continue playing those old games, you should probably make it appealing somehow. Honestly, I'd love to play through Crackdown again, but without any new single player content, it's just the same old BS (yes, I'm a single-player mode whore). And at $10 for the content I passed up over 2 years ago for the same price, I can get a whole new game from a used game store.
Chibi Chaingun - blackhivemedia.com @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:07PM
I'm a campaign-whore too. I wish more console games did campaign packs.
Vcize @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:24AM
Splosion Man > Shadow Complex, TrialsHD, MvC2
CaramelZappa @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:27AM
I got splosion man and shadow complex, and man are they good.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:33AM
I got just Shadow Complex and 1943, but man what a well-spent $30

NervousXtian @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:43AM
Well, the secret to their success isn't hard to understand:
Release quality games for XBLA and people will buy them.
Shadow Complex, 'Splosion Man, Trials HD, and BF1943 were all great games.
Shadow Complex is my GOTY so far, but there's still more to come (though dwindling down to not so much to come) this holiday season.
cadaver @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:59AM
::::::::::STILL WAITING ON MY 800 POINTS::::::::::::
WTF... Its awesome that MS had a huge SUMMER, this is what happens when you put out the best Arcade games... people buy them.
aristokrat @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:04AM
I was too backlogged with retail games to play XBLA games. There are just too many games I want to play.
Windmill @ Sep 23rd 2009 9:09AM
I agree, there is just way too much to play, not enough time.
Chupacabra @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:11AM
Shadow Complex was amazing, but give me Perfect Dark now!
Smoke_me_a_Kipper @ Sep 22nd 2009 11:52AM
1 vs 100 rocked. The whole family, yes even the wife loved playing it. Best online experience ever for a family game.
Shadow Complex & BF 1943 are worth the extra $5. They are a step above most XBLA games and I didn't mind paying for the extra quality. I won't have paid more, but hopefully other will produce quality games for less and give the $15 games a run for Xbox live users money.
Markez @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:18PM
Did you get the missus a gold membership? I've tried to play local with other folks but it doesn't seem to work unless they're gold?
Smoke_me_a_Kipper @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:41PM
No, there was/is a way to allow guests to play. The gamertag will read KAPT_KIPPER-1 and a 1 appears on the avatar ( looks the same as your avatar except the shirt)
There's a FAQ on the Xbox forums.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:28PM
Two years of great Summer of Arcade promos. Hopefully they'll fix next years "Days of Arcade" so its worth a damn. I enjoy Flock! is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but everything was pretty lackluster (OutRun is always fun, but its also just a Sunday drive simulator).
Shadow Complex is my GOTY so far though. Amazing game.
uncle jesse @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:51PM
I'm glad there has been a lot of success with the XBLA. Hopefully it means that more and more companies will put time and effort into creating more and more great games to download.
They released a bunch of excellent games and people bought them - it's that simple.
On a side not, Trials HD was my favourite. My god that game is HARD!
GordoJones @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:49PM
Yes, Shadow Complex is great, I love it.
Last year's Summer of Arcade with Braid, Geometry Wars 2, Bionic Commando Rearmed, and Castle Crashers remains my favorite month so far.
Steven W. @ Sep 23rd 2009 5:46AM
I only bought two of the five Summer of Arcade titles last year, and I did the same this year. Last year I got Castle Crashers and Braid. This year I got Trials HD and Shadow Complex. Well, I didn't buy Shadow Complex. I snagged myself a Shadow Complex code. ;)
I am thinking about getting Splosion Man. It's supposed to be really fun. I tried the demo, liked it slightly, and deleted it. Not much flavor in the demo.
Shadow Complex deserves a medal for how creative it is. It's amazing. I played for over 10 hours just to get every item. I'm still working on my second try on it. It kinda lost it's glow after the first playthrough, though. Still a great game, definitely a buy worthy one.
