New Super Mario Bros. Wii coming down the pipe Nov. 15
Though the recent Nintendo press release announcing the Wii's new $199 price point was, for the most part, completely devoid of surprises, one new nugget of info was embedded in the stuff we already knew -- the release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii has transformed from the ever-ambiguous "holiday 2009" to a decidedly more rigid "November 15." We can think of one mustachioed plumber who's not afraid of a little Modern competition. Bold, sir. Rather bold.

I wold really surprised if this outsells MW2. I mean, mouth to the floor shock.

Edit please...

Given how Nintendo's games tend to sell to the average Joe who's unlikely to play it for very long, just as well as it sells to the hardcore player who's going to pick it apart to the very last hidden coin block, I can see it as a very real possibility. I know I'm planning on grabbing a copy, while I wasn't going to buy MW2 (haven't even played CoD4, tbh, and as long as TF2 remains as interesting as it has, I don't think I'll need to just yet).
Mr Khan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:39PM
For sales within the year 2009, NSMBWii is probably going to buried, but in the long-term, it will probably surpass it (though Wii Sports Resort should beat both in the long term)
Premature ejaculation man @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:45PM
I'll be getting both =)
I'm liking the coop idea of it. I just wish they would release more information.
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:12AM
I fully expect it to outsell MW2 in the long run. I'd be stunned if it outsold it this year, though.
I don't expect it to come anywhere near NSMB DS, though.
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 24th 2009 12:15AM
It won't outsell Modern Warfare 2 long term between the PS3, 360 and PC. In fact, I'll bet anyone $100 that Modern Warfare 2 outsells it as of Jan 1 2011. I do think this game will sell very good but not better than the most popular game on the market between three thriving platforms. However, I see this Super Mario brothers as more of a system seller than Modern Warfare 2. If Nintendo wanted to have a huge uptick in sales this Christmas they would release that $199 bundle with Wii Sports and this new Super Mario bros but instead of a White Wii make it be a limited edition bundle with Mario brothers graphics. THAT shit would be all the rage.
bongoes the Black Lantern @ Sep 24th 2009 3:34PM
I'm going to buy this game on launch day just because it's the same day as MW2. If it wasn't I might wait a few weeks.
Worm @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:38PM
Am I wrong for wanting Nintendo to make a new franchise?
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:12AM
Nintendo has made a bunch of new franchises this generation. They just don't release them in North America.
Neter @ Sep 24th 2009 1:45AM
You mean new Ips like WiiSports/Resort?
chrisredfield31 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:36PM

phr3qu3ncy441 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:39PM
i look forward to seeing what sorts of multiplayer stuff it'll have. a teamwork mode would be fun.
hopefully the game is lengthy too. looks like it'll be an interesting chill game.
Jacksons @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:40PM
I hope it's not as easy as it looks.
Shadow Hog @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:45PM
Well, TECHNICALLY this is the game that kicks off Nintendo's "Demo Play" patent - where if you're REALLY stuck in a stage, the game can show you how to get out of it (or maybe even get out of it for you). So either the game is going to be piss easy if you use it and brutally hard at spots if you don't, or just piss easy all around (like the DS game).
Not that I mind, honestly - I like playing through an easy game now and then. Worked out well for Wario Lands 2 & 3, where you literally cannot die - yet they turned out to be some of the most engrossing and fun platformers in existence.
CaramelZappa @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:43PM
It's definitely not going to be like Super Mario World.
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:13AM
It's probably going to be easy enough to beat the game and see the ending, but have a bunch of other stages that range from "Tricky" to "Hard as Balls", a la most Mario games.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:35AM
What were the names of the secret levels in SMW? I remember Tubular but not much else...
The Good Soldier Svejk @ Sep 24th 2009 1:35AM
Gnarly, Tubular, Way Cool, Awesome, Groovy, Mondo, Outrageous, Funky, Rad, Cowabunga.
2 of those are lies.
Levi @ Sep 24th 2009 2:36PM
Lol +1. I loved those levels, and really wish they'd put those style secret levels in every game ever.
Mr Khan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:42PM
It finishes up my purchase plans for the rest of the year.
Means i'll have no new games in October, but i could use a bit of time off (Okami, Twilight Princess, and Radiant Dawn demand replaying, but i'll still need to make that choice), and TMNT won't last me more than a few weeks.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:43PM
For some reason, Twilight Princess on Wii pisses me off. Probably because they made Link right handed. Please let us choose his handedness in the next one, Shig!
Bubbameister33 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:50PM
Alton, you not only have taught me how to cook many a dish but you have also helped me learn a new phrase. "Handedness"
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:43PM
So what if they mirror the world (and Link)? The controls were better. Plus, you could equip four sub-items at a time (compared to just two on GameCube).
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:51PM
I disagree on the controls. It may seem small, but I'm left-handed and an option would be nice.
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:16AM
I've been trying to do a side-by-side Zelda and Okami playthrough in the last few months in my spare time. I'm not getting terribly far in either of them, as I play them completely on the side, but...I think I actually like Okami better now.
Before I swore up and down that I preferred Twilight Princess, but I'm just flat out enjoying Okami more now.
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 24th 2009 12:29AM
Okami is one of the best games last gen. Haven't played it on the Wii but it seems like a game that would benefit from motion controls. LOVE that game. One of my favorites along with Ico and SotC.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:29AM
I agree, samfish. However, Wind Waker is every bit Okami's equal, if not its superior.
Yatcho @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:42PM
Wow, a game NOT going to 2010, scared away by MW2
Special Agent Steve @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:46PM

Chromekreeper @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:45PM
dont get me wrong about this one, Nintendo needs to find some more mascots that arent from the 80's. sooner or later i wont be interested in their games
Wardo @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:56PM
But all the best mascots and just things in general come for the 80's...
FACT!
Wardo @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:57PM
*from
My bad.
Shadow Hog @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:09PM
To be fair, people just aren't even TRYING for mascots anymore these days. While we had miserable failures such as Bubsy and Awesome Possum back in the '90s, at least they were attempting mascot games. Nowadays the big thing is generic male [frequently space] marines a la Master Chief, and now we're getting THAT in droves.
So... I guess nothing's changed, except the focus. But God, I want the focus changed back to mascots, because while it led to awful shit like Awesome Possum, it also led to kickass titles like Rayman or Earthworm Jim, to say nothing of Mario and Sonic... :(
Sly (Now with less shake, more bake!) @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:18PM
sackboy was trying to be a mascot. and he got pretty far too.
il_duce620 @ Sep 24th 2009 9:12AM
Pretty sure Nintendo couldn't care any less if YOU lose interest in their "mascots from the 80s."
There are millions of people like me, on the other hand, that just want good games. And Nintendo consistently delivers. And they'll sell just fine without you and your lack of interest.
Chromekreeper @ Sep 24th 2009 1:53PM
yah, their amazing games like, ugh... this game, ugh... the next mario game, and
wii sports resort
makimak22 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:45PM
This is gonna sell. It has both "Mario" and "Wii" in its title. Wait! Nintendo! Not so fast with the Wii price drop!
whistlepig @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:48PM
id be into this if i could play it with a regular controller and not the motion stuff
CheeziePotato @ Sep 24th 2009 12:04AM
Same here
Jimbotron @ Sep 24th 2009 12:08PM
You shake the remote to do a couple of things. Is that too much work for you?
Suichimo @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:54PM
I'm gonna need to get a third controller for this, not that it wouldn't hurt to get another anyway. Not sure if I'll be able to pry my mom away from it.
But hell. Local Multiplayer? Check. Mario? Check. 2D? Check. Sounds like my kind of game.
Still confuses me to hell why developers seemingly want to kill off local multiplayer.
Quiggy @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:17PM
The reason why local multiplayer is disappearing: let's pretend there's two games, L and O. L has local multiplayer, O has online multiplayer only. Some friends and I want to play L together. We buy one system, controllers, and a single copy of the game. If we want to play O together, we buy multiple systems and multiple copies of the game. Net result: more profit for the company.
esposch @ Sep 24th 2009 4:43AM
@Quiggy
But local multiplayer means free word of mouth advertising, which is vital for games without huge marketing muscle. Plus local multiplayer doesn't really benefit FPS type games.
Quiggy @ Sep 24th 2009 8:39AM
Are you insane? Split-screen FPS is amazing. I take it you've never played Goldeneye with friends, or even Halo. Some friends and I once spent an entire night shooting each other in Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer, which is generally acknowledged as being terrible, and we still had a great time. Hell, lack of local multiplayer is the entire reason I didn't buy The Conduit––all I want is a game where I can shoot friends with my Wii Remote.
