Though the recent Nintendo press release announcing the Wii's new $199 price point was, for the most part, completely devoid of surprises, one new nugget of info was embedded in the stuff we already knew -- the release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii has transformed from the ever-ambiguous "holiday 2009" to a decidedly more rigid "November 15." We can think of one mustachioed plumber who's not afraid of a little Modern competition. Bold, sir. Rather bold.

It won't outsell Modern Warfare 2 long term between the PS3, 360 and PC. In fact, I'll bet anyone $100 that Modern Warfare 2 outsells it as of Jan 1 2011. I do think this game will sell very good but not better than the most popular game on the market between three thriving platforms. However, I see this Super Mario brothers as more of a system seller than Modern Warfare 2. If Nintendo wanted to have a huge uptick in sales this Christmas they would release that $199 bundle with Wii Sports and this new Super Mario bros but instead of a White Wii make it be a limited edition bundle with Mario brothers graphics. THAT shit would be all the rage.

Am I wrong for wanting Nintendo to make a new franchise?

It finishes up my purchase plans for the rest of the year.
Means i'll have no new games in October, but i could use a bit of time off (Okami, Twilight Princess, and Radiant Dawn demand replaying, but i'll still need to make that choice), and TMNT won't last me more than a few weeks.

For some reason, Twilight Princess on Wii pisses me off. Probably because they made Link right handed. Please let us choose his handedness in the next one, Shig!

Alton, you not only have taught me how to cook many a dish but you have also helped me learn a new phrase. "Handedness"

So what if they mirror the world (and Link)? The controls were better. Plus, you could equip four sub-items at a time (compared to just two on GameCube).

I disagree on the controls. It may seem small, but I'm left-handed and an option would be nice.

I've been trying to do a side-by-side Zelda and Okami playthrough in the last few months in my spare time. I'm not getting terribly far in either of them, as I play them completely on the side, but...I think I actually like Okami better now.
Before I swore up and down that I preferred Twilight Princess, but I'm just flat out enjoying Okami more now.

Okami is one of the best games last gen. Haven't played it on the Wii but it seems like a game that would benefit from motion controls. LOVE that game. One of my favorites along with Ico and SotC.

I agree, samfish. However, Wind Waker is every bit Okami's equal, if not its superior.

dont get me wrong about this one, Nintendo needs to find some more mascots that arent from the 80's. sooner or later i wont be interested in their games

Pretty sure Nintendo couldn't care any less if YOU lose interest in their "mascots from the 80s."
There are millions of people like me, on the other hand, that just want good games. And Nintendo consistently delivers. And they'll sell just fine without you and your lack of interest.

I'm gonna need to get a third controller for this, not that it wouldn't hurt to get another anyway. Not sure if I'll be able to pry my mom away from it.
But hell. Local Multiplayer? Check. Mario? Check. 2D? Check. Sounds like my kind of game.
Still confuses me to hell why developers seemingly want to kill off local multiplayer.

The reason why local multiplayer is disappearing: let's pretend there's two games, L and O. L has local multiplayer, O has online multiplayer only. Some friends and I want to play L together. We buy one system, controllers, and a single copy of the game. If we want to play O together, we buy multiple systems and multiple copies of the game. Net result: more profit for the company.

But local multiplayer means free word of mouth advertising, which is vital for games without huge marketing muscle. Plus local multiplayer doesn't really benefit FPS type games.

Are you insane? Split-screen FPS is amazing. I take it you've never played Goldeneye with friends, or even Halo. Some friends and I once spent an entire night shooting each other in Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer, which is generally acknowledged as being terrible, and we still had a great time. Hell, lack of local multiplayer is the entire reason I didn't buy The Conduit––all I want is a game where I can shoot friends with my Wii Remote.

I'm still waiting for a NMH2 before I re-purchase a wii, or for a really good deal. (I mean on top of the price drop, $200 is still too much)

I'm looking forward to it. But I can't help but feel that NSMB Wii is somewhat barebone. Instead of giving us 2 new characters they give us 2 Toads, where is the creativity ?
