Nintendo officially announces Wii price drop to $199 in US
The second volley has officially been fired from one of Sony's competitors during its Tokyo Game Show 2009 liveblog with Nintendo officially unveiling the Wii price dropping to $199.99 in the US. The much rumored price drop goes into effect on Sunday, September 27 (that's this Sunday, folks), confirming reports from earlier today from a leaked Best Buy internal memo.
The official info from Nintendo doesn't comment on price drops anywhere else in the world or the rumored UK re-bundling. We'll follow up with Nintendo as TGS continues this week.

Now everyone who didn't have a Wii can buy one now................
mr nimblewick @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:12PM
They should do that if they want to they should do that.
I kid, Jesus, you know I love you.
Actually, Jesus, I'm kidding. I don't believe in you. Sorry
Bagels: Almost certainly not as stupid as you think. Also, Memes. @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:23PM

mr nimblewick. posting that, causes flames.
Believe what you will is what I say :]
xbox420king @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:27PM
That would be me. Getting a wii this sunday!
Kinsey @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:57PM
Sorry still not interested.
I'd rather buy a second PS3 for as Blu Ray player for my room than a Wii at this point. As much as I want Metroid the new Mario and some other games for the Wii, I still have a huge backlog of games I have to catch up on.
With having a PC, 360 and a PS3 I'd be just wasting my money buying a console that I will never play unfortunately.
RKN @ Sep 24th 2009 12:33AM
I absolutely agree with Kinsey.
Quattro @ Sep 24th 2009 1:35AM
So the Wii is not going to cost about the same as a DSi?
mr nimblewick @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:10PM
That's pretty cool, I guess.
ChuckBartowski @ Sep 24th 2009 12:30AM
yeah not that big of a deal if you already have one.
Bronco-fan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:11PM
Yay now it's time to finally get one
Bronco-fan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:13PM
Also, it said NSMB Wii is coming November 15th
koehler83 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:12PM
Probably $229.99 in Canada
Biggie @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:33PM
Should be no more than 220 in Canada... I hope Nintendo follows Sony and goes for par pricing.
Guibs @ Sep 24th 2009 9:00AM
Which as always been retarded, because the PS3 and Xbox 360 console in canada matches the prices they have in the US. Why won't nintendo follow sut is beyong me.
I sure hope it gets to be 199$ in Canada. If not, my son might not be getting a Wii for his birthday after all.
Pie Man @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:13PM
Oh snap! Price drop announced in the MIDDLE of Sony's keynote?! Souds like a Kanye move to me...
DBuck_Eye @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:15PM
Listen Sony, that's great and all, but the Nintendo Wii's now $199!!
james @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:16PM
please, nobody attempt a quote
Dv8thwonder @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:18PM
Uhh, PS3 might have sold 833k in last 2 weeks but the Wii is now $199!
Shadow Hog @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:04PM
Yo Sony! I'm really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but Nintendo has the best-selling console OF ALL TIME!
Bradwart @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:10PM
Best selling console of all time? Eh?
PS2, PS1, NES, all say HI!
Shadow Hog @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:17PM
You make it sound like I was being serious and not just quoting the meme verbatim. ;P
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Sep 24th 2009 12:25AM
Technically, it is the best selling console of all time, as far as sales rates go.
Michael T [Planeteer | Power of Mr. T] @ Sep 24th 2009 11:56AM
@Shadow Hog & Bradwart: Technically, Nintendo does have the best-selling console of all time, if you count the Game Boy as a "console."
bongoes the Black Lantern @ Sep 24th 2009 3:36PM
"Best selling console of all time? Eh?
PS2, PS1, NES, all say HI!"
The NES is a Nintendo console.
nhcdrybones5 @ Sep 25th 2009 12:17AM
The Wii is officially the best selling console of all time. It's surpassed PS2 in sales in a certain time period.
ridgecity @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:15PM
funny, here in Mexico they just raise the price to $398 dollars. so f*cking funny.
Engerz @ Sep 24th 2009 2:17AM
Dios mio!

So....where's my black Wii?
ToadStoolPorridge (PSN: tennispro_99) @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:26PM
Right next to my backwards compatible PS3 slim :(
Roto13 @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:27PM
That's what she said.
Derick @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:43PM
This is what I'm waiting for. I'll get a Wii [again] if it ever comes out as the console I wanted all along.
Hardy @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:16PM
Does this also mean NIntendo will try harder when it comes to software instead of the current, be innovative but not do enough to make the game great, just good?
AlphaOmegaSin @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:20PM
lemme know when the announce a greatest hits line and quite charging full price for titles like twilight princess and super mario galaxy, then i might care. 200$ is still alot for gamecube hardware and a remote that doesn't do what its really inteded to do without motion plus :P
Dv8thwonder @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:22PM
If all goes according to plan, Wii could see a surge of 2008 levels. This time with 3rsd party support to back up the onslaught that is Q1 2010.
michas_pi @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:35PM
How will sales surge when the market is already saturated with Wiis?
Neebs @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:57PM
Um, for the reason. Supply is up and price is down.
So sales can increase and so does demand.
Mr Khan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:23PM
lol, nobody seems to care.
Though i must say, Nintendo did a much better job at keeping it quiet than Sony or Microsoft. Though in fairness, it was harder for Sony, since the realities of manufacturing telegraphed it well in advance.
Interesting to see where it goes, though. They've been building 2.4 million worldwide monthly, but selling nowhere near that. Time to move some stock.
No Kill Tayler @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:25PM
That and, everyone was expecting it.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:26PM
I care. My favorite series of all time is Zelda, and I was planning on buying a Wii as soon as they announced the new Zelda at E3 or whatever (was it E3?). Plus, Brawl is always fun.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:28PM
Also, I can't find my copy of Paper Mario. Is it on the VC?
Bronco-fan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:34PM
I care (tmac btw, i got banned for 2 weeks...bb next tuesday :P). Definitely getting one now.
Bronco-fan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:38PM
@Alton
Yes the original paper mario is on VC. I too plan on buying it when I get a wii.
Alton Brown [ XBL: LordToastington, Soon-To-Be-PSN: OrIsItAltonBrown] @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:41PM
Wonderful!
Mr Khan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:44PM
Bans are temporary here? I always figured they were permanent, because new accounts are a dime a dozen.
Bronco-fan @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:48PM
that's what I was told at least. I guess since I'm a major member here they're cutting me a little slack :P
Would be nice to see more consistency with the bans though. Little tired of seeing sony trolls overrun this place.
Sly (Now with less shake, more bake!) @ Sep 23rd 2009 11:11PM
tmac's ban is temporary. most bans were permanent though. and sprinkles was the only IP ban i've heard of so far.
esposch @ Sep 24th 2009 4:24AM
Joystiq just isn't the same without tmac.
I think everyone here secretly misses him....
Bronco-fan @ Sep 24th 2009 11:46AM
Have no fear, I will be back in.....*counts on fingers*....5 days!
Discotheque @ Sep 23rd 2009 10:25PM
If Epic Mickey is Wii exclusive I'll have to buy a Wii
Yes I am willing to buy a system for one game, but that game is just too awesome for words judging by concept.
