I'd like to see what new features DX11 brings to the table, we probably won't see anything dramatic in these first games. Hopefully, it will make a larger difference than DX10 did.

Well it's one better isn't it.

Think about it your playing games and all your DXes are already at 10, where can you go from there? Nowhere, thats right but with DX 11 you've got one more. It's one better.

Sure, I just hope its a larger success than DX10 was, which it will be, since DX10 was a Vista exclusive, which received poor press. DX11 is for Vista and 7 which will give it much more market exposure. But I hope the graphics will look better as well. Only game I've noticed a difference in DX10 is Crysis with the full object motion blur, very pretty.

The extra features don't mean much if developers never use them. I doubt that console ports to the PC will use DX11 features, well Dirt 2 is an exception. I want to see a comparison of DX11 Dirt 2 vs the console versions.

I think we will mainly see DX11 in PC exclusive titles, consoles are the focus of most developers which are still using DX9 or its equilvalent. We may not see DX11 widely used on the PC until the next console generation using DX11+ hardware.

We know that Epic and ID Software are focusing on consoles, the PC is on the backburner for them so they will delay implementing DX11 features. They are focusing on the consoles when it is the PC that made them what they are today.

Its a shame that PC development is being guided by consoles now. : (

DX11 should make more of a difference than DX10 did. If for no other reason than the fact that DX10 is backwards compatible with a previous version of Windows.

DX10 was Vista-only without third-party hacks for games to make them run on Windows XP. Not a lot of people upgraded to Windows Vista compared to 98/ME > XP so you ended up with a small install base developers didn't really care about targetting with DX10 versus DX9.

Windows 7 already seems to have a bit more popularity than Vista did. At the very least Win 7 has less >idiots< / people complaing 'Ohh Noes! My idle system resources are being used to complete maintenance tasts when I'm not using them! Vista's a memory hog!' In addition, Windows Vista will be getting DX11 support patched into it.

So any current Windows Vista users will be able to use DX11 and all the people who upgrade from XP to Windows 7. Right off the bat, with DX11, your looking at an equal install base that will grow larger over time than DX10. A larger install base should garner more developer support from more potential sales. I can definately see DX11 making a bigger difference. In a way, we're getting two leaps forward since DX10 never really took off were almost going from DX9 -> DX11.

During DX10's lifetime, over 110 games were made and only 21 were DX10 capable. So let's hope for a better ration of 1:5 for DX11.

Yay, we'd just about got used to the system requirements hike of DX10 just in time for DX11!

Didn't you notice that DX10 was much more inefficient (for the first year or two)? It's got better now but I expect the same of DX11 since that's new.

STALKER is a great game - much more believable and involving post-apocalyptic environment than Fallout 3 - but man I wish they'd actually finish one. It took months of patching to make the first playable, and I was never able to beat the second b/c of bugs in the final boss fight.

Are you going to buy one or build one? I highly recommended building, it isn't hard at all, if I can do it, anyone can do it, except Sprinkles.

I suggest an AMD processor and an nVidia graphics card. Go for a Phenom II AMD processor. The graphics card...well, get an XFX or EVGA (Since I've heard of no problems with either and Windows 7), and GeForce 9800 or higher should be great.

I think DX11 will be great for the industry. Microsoft is doing a great job of not overselling it as the next "big thing" like they did with DX10/Vista. If anything, this will be great for the iteration of the Xbox where I imagine we're going to see DX11.5 or perhaps even DX12.

It isn't time consuming. I built my PC for the first time back in January and it took me two hours at the absolute maximum and I enjoyed it.

It will take longer for instance if you want to build in a compact case, like a Micro-ATX one.

Even if you have no idea where to start, there are plenty of online guides to help you build a PC. Don't buy a gaming PC, they are almost always overpriced and underperforming. Take the effort to build a PC, its fun, rewarding, you pick your own components and everything else, you take pride in gaming on something you built yourself.

hardest part about about plugging in parts of a PC is choosing which awesome parts you want.

And if you're a geek (I would assume so if you're reading Joystiq) then spending hours reading hardware reviews and spec sheets should be more fun than work.

RKN, could you by any chance link me to some articles about how to build your first gaming rig? I could just google it and I assume that it takes out some fun on building one, but I want to know some tips first hand from someone who has made a successful gaming rig. Cheers to all of you PC gamers out there!

If you plan to start a new hobby, how do you not have the 1-2 hours necessary to build your rig?

You'd be sat around that long waiting for the fed-ex guy with your prebuilt anyway.

Sadly, your request to see Dirt 2 on consoles versus on PCs in DX11 is not really a fair comparison at all.

First, the only DX11 video cards out there have about 2.7Teraflops versus the xbox 360/PS3s gpu's clocking in at around 0.5 Teraflops. You'll be able to play at a much higher resolution. Probably a resolution like ohh 1920x1080 using the 5870 and get a fairly steady 60fps with some anti-aliasing and anti-scopic filtering plus all the DX11 goodies.

With a console, you'll be lucky if you reach 1280x720p as a lot of next-gen titles, even blockbusters, have resolutions below even that. See: Halo 3, GTAIV, etc. You'll be lucky if there is any AA on the ps3 at all or more than 2xAA on the xbox 360. Even then, if you get above 30 fps, consider yourself fortunate and very lucky.

It would be hard to say for certain if the difference is the higher resolution, anti-aliasing, fps and anti-scopic filtering or if the difference is due to DX11 goodies like tessolation. There's to many factors involved. I'd rather see a port of the console version to PC versus the PC Dx11 version. However, a company would never waste the time/resources necessary to port a console game to the pc that was already on the pc, so that be something I'm confident we'll never see.

what's wrong with 1280x720p and 30 fps? I mean if your game runs constantly above 24fps it's ok and on 30 it's perfect. You're wasting processing power and just heating up your PU's, more like a lose-lose situation there :p. If you want a pc that can run at all the awesome specs you describe you'll need a fucking mega rig costing you a small 1200-1500 euro? And yes I do have a pc(quite mediocre specs), and I game on it, if it runs meduim or high at 1400x900 and 30fps I'm happy. People waste to much time on being graphic whores :p.

Yes, who would want stuff to be better. Whats the point.

Sorry, I had to be the jerk there.

It makes me sad that this is always what any thread about any pc game on joystiq. Does anyone have anything to say about the game?
