TGS 2009: Fumito Ueda on the reality of The Last Guardian's fantasy (oh, and new trailer)
Ueda's previous games were praised for being able to push players to emotions rarely expressed in most games. After watching this trailer from Tokyo Game Show, it seems certain that Ueda might be able to pull off a hat trick with The Last Guardian.

EPIC!

As a strapping, beefy man-gamer i've never done this, but can no longer resist:
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Jarred @ Sep 24th 2009 1:10AM
This is the absolute must have PS3 game I've been waiting for.
stblack @ Sep 24th 2009 1:44AM
uncharted 2?.... but im dieing to get this game shadow of the colossus was stunning, i have not been lucky enough to get a copy of ico
kacex @ Sep 24th 2009 1:54AM
You know what would be great to have? upgraded HD versions of Ico and SotC on a single blu-ray just like GOW!! Sony please make it happen!! I'll fill all the surveys u want!!
ben murray @ Sep 24th 2009 3:53AM
couldn't agree more - Ico and SotC rereleased and upgraded please.
dave @ Sep 24th 2009 11:46PM
Thirded. I would rebuy ICO and SotC in a heartbeat, if they were HD.
I also hear that there were some bosses left out of SotC, because the PS2 wasn't able to handle them at a good enough framerate. Now THAT is a bonus which would leave fans in a drooling mess.
Luke @ Sep 24th 2009 1:11AM
I love the music already.
A1 @ Sep 24th 2009 4:39AM
Millers Crossing :)
Tunguska @ Sep 24th 2009 7:50AM
One of my favorite films. Just hearing the music really makes want to watch it again.
Marius @ Sep 24th 2009 1:11AM
Must have now

Residentevil72501 (PSN: rankore) @ Sep 24th 2009 2:42AM
Hell yeah man this cannot come out soon enough for me! I am going to send my friend this vid and the trailer I think this might finally push him over the edge on buying a PS3 at least I hope so.
kentuckyfried @ Sep 24th 2009 1:12AM
Next year will be kick-ass!
ripslymemc @ Sep 24th 2009 1:12AM
I love the different style of gameplay, this is what I'd like to see more of, and less of the crappy generic fps we're so used to seeing.
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 24th 2009 1:49AM
AHMEN!
Especially when it's the same regurgitated crap as the previous iteration with little to offer in terms of new content, direction or innovation.
Espiownage @ Sep 24th 2009 1:13AM
Up, up and away Falkor!
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Sep 24th 2009 1:14AM
I really hope there will be a remastered Ico/SotC pack out too.
DomoBraden @ Sep 24th 2009 1:55AM
Yes. Dear god yes. Far too many players have completely missed the opportunity to play Team ICO's previous two games, (especially ICO).
kacex @ Sep 24th 2009 1:55AM
I was just thinking of that in another comment up there... didnt read urs but +1 to you, great minds think alike :D
mansour @ Sep 24th 2009 1:22AM
Although I still find this dog/bird hybrid creature disturbing, I'm sure this game will be impressive. I wish they release ICO and SoTC for PS3 as they did with GoW Collection.
johnnynumber5 @ Sep 24th 2009 1:17AM
I know people like to say that Japanese developers are behind Western developers but I don't believe that. This game has more soul, heart and imagination than anything I've seen this generation. I can't wait to play this one. It's like the never ending story but even better!
HighFiveJesus @ Sep 24th 2009 1:22AM
nice bird like quality to the thingamabob.
coffee_elf @ Sep 24th 2009 1:25AM
Wow, apparently, the Japanese title is "Toriko, the Man-Eating Giant Eagle."
I thought "The Last Guardian" was going to be the title worldwide.
BananaBoat @ Sep 24th 2009 1:35AM
Toriko could also be read "Trico", which was the code name for the game. In other words, the code name for the project is the actual name of the project (in Japan anyway) in a way that we didn't expect.
It's a shame, but "The Man Eating Bird Toriko" (or whatever the official name translates to, I forget) doesn't really roll off the tongue in English. If the English title sells even one extra copy in the US and Europe, it will have been worthwhile. Why they felt the need to change Wander and the Colossus to Shadow of the Colossus will always be a mystery to me though (does the word "Shadow" really sell western audiences?)
sonicspike41 @ Sep 24th 2009 1:54AM
Personally, I think "Shadow of the..." makes a bit more sense. "Wander and the" implies that the characters name is Wander, but since it also means to aimlessly walk around it could be a bit more confusing.
It's a great name since you do tend to wander around a lot in SotC, but it might confuse some people. Shadow of the Colossus feels more... epic and mysterious. Combined with the cover art I feel it lends itself to the gameplay and emotions. You really are a young boy standing in the shadow of the colossus.
mansour @ Sep 24th 2009 1:26AM
I partially agree, "boring combat systems" were in ICO but not in SoTC. SoTC was flawless, one of the best games ever.
shadow763 @ Sep 24th 2009 1:30AM
I just want to play with the wonderful kitty dragon.
BananaBoat @ Sep 24th 2009 1:30AM
I don't want to see another second of footage from the game, or rather, I've seen plenty and now I'm ready for the game to come out (which may be years away, considering that he seems to imply that the story isn't even done)
There isn't a whole lot of new information presented in the trailer, but it is nice to get a behind the scenes look at Team Ico (they don't do very many interviews after all). The most interesting footage to me was the scene where the bridge is collapsing, and the boy has to grab on to Toriko's tail to keep from falling. It seems like the tech from SOTC related to one character being able to grab on to a much larger character (without noticable errors) has made the jump to the new game.
I could go on and on about nerdy technical aspects, but really, I don't need to for this game. The art direction and story matter more than the technology behind the game, and I can't wait for things such as the OST to be nailed down (they are still using the placeholder music from the first trailer).
Oh, and I second the Ico/SOTC HD pack on the PS3, though I doubt it is going to happen. The sales of both games just weren't high enough to warrant it. Having said that...a man can dream.
Blkant @ Sep 24th 2009 1:32AM
Yes I am looking forward to it Mr, now, IF YOUD ONLY FINISH THE GAME ALREADY!
I wantz to playz it :(
Espiownage @ Sep 24th 2009 1:35AM
aside from the constant dips in framerate and the fact that you don't have normal enemies to battle, don't get me wrong, great game, but far from flawless.
Nathan @ Sep 24th 2009 1:52AM
It's not a dog, not a cat, and not a bird. It's a LUCK DRAGON!!!
HeXeN {KevinConroyDefeatsBatman} @ Sep 24th 2009 1:53AM
Looks like they capture Nature perfectly.I really would like to have this by 2010 (at least).
DomoBraden @ Sep 24th 2009 1:59AM
@Espiownage -
Although I agree about the framerate issues, if they were to add regular enemies it might break the feeling of solitude and immersion. Then again, who knows, but I have faith that Team ICO knew exactly what they were doing.
macabrearts @ Sep 24th 2009 2:43AM
y'know, this holiday and early 2010 (I hope for this as well) PS3 lineup really has me wishing I had a PS3... I guess it'll happen in the next three months or so, so I'll be okay. I honestly thought this was coming to the 360 though.
Game looks great, graphics and storytelling might just set new standards. My current favorite game story is COD4, but this looks even better. Keep up the good work, ICO!
laser beams @ Sep 24th 2009 3:34AM
What in the world made you think this was coming to the 360? Team ICO is owned by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. that would be like expecting Mario Galaxy 2 on Xbox 360 or expecting Halo 4 on the PS3. Well, at least it appears you have a lot of time to save up for the PS3- I'm pretty certain that this game will be worth it (the money AND the long wait).
Courtney @ Sep 24th 2009 3:13AM
"I like to surprise players with the ending..."
The kitty dragon gets to live!!!!
But everyone else in the world dies.
Lookhappy @ Sep 24th 2009 4:04AM
looks amazing! Ueda is a legend!
Ico and Sotc rereleased too please!
W00t!
Deadpool @ Sep 24th 2009 4:39AM
Team ICO games. There's just something about their games....I can't put my finger on it. They feel refreshing around the barrage of "shoots this and kill that" games that are out there today. Don't get me wrong, I really like those types games. But sometimes even I, Deadpool, would like to play fetch with his giant Bird/Cat/Dog.
Eron Wright @ Sep 24th 2009 4:59AM
How is the creature not a baby griffin? Wikipedia says that they are guardians, which I think is the clincher!
taurus82 (HD ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, Please) @ Sep 24th 2009 5:25AM
It's a fecking Griffin cub/chick!
Benny @ Sep 24th 2009 5:33AM
This is my reason for a PS3!
davey.moran1 @ Sep 24th 2009 4:44PM
Giddy doesn't descibe how I fell about this.
Leminnes @ Sep 24th 2009 7:46AM
Holy frickin crap, this looks absolutely gorgeous. Bah, screw you Sony for making me buy a PS3 for this. T_T I'm going to have to take out a loan or something.
Reinard @ Sep 24th 2009 7:57AM
This might be the game to make me buy a PS3...
...if I weren't so terrified that the big cute oh god adorable monsterthing might die :(
Licker @ Sep 24th 2009 8:41AM
I have one question: Can I hold Falcor's hand?
Oh, please, say to me
You´ll let me be your man
and please, say to me
You´ll let me hold your hand
Now let me hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
And when I touch you i feel happy, inside
It´s such a feeling
That my love
I can't hide
George McBain @ Sep 24th 2009 9:35AM
Nice; this and GoWIII are the reasons I WILL be picking up a PS3 early next year.
j.howlett @ Sep 24th 2009 9:49AM
love it
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Sep 24th 2009 10:33AM
To all the people who called it a griffin.......HA! See, even the devs confirmed it isn't anything!
KITTY DRAGON LIVES ON!!
Mr. Joe @ Sep 24th 2009 4:39PM
don't worry mr. ueda, i'm eagerly looking forward to this game!
Brought to you by the letter A @ Sep 24th 2009 5:23PM
It may just be me, but does any notice a lack of textures on the boy? At least relative to the rest of the world.
