TGS 2009: Final Fantasy XIV trailer is chock-full of friendship
Though we've gotten a few scant details about Final Fantasy XIV's fantasy-filled backdrop Eorzea, Square Enix hasn't done much to promote the area's tourist-friendly qualities. However, a new trailer from the Tokyo Game Show reveals the locales' enticing bits: It's jam-packed with riches, renown and swingin' meet-up spots where adventurers can relax with an ice cold Phoenix Down or partake in ... some form of trading card game. (Please, please, please be Tetra Master.)
The video also features an appearance by a Marlboro, a fleet of killer jellyfish and a cadre of impossible airships. Seriously, we're usually not ones to raise a stink, but Wilbur and Orville must be spinning in their graves right now.

Stop it already!
I need to get to bed but all this epic news is giving me ENERGY!
Damn that was a beautiful trailer.
Dan @ Sep 24th 2009 3:07AM
I agree it was beautiful
TheFantasyLivesOnXIII @ Sep 24th 2009 9:52AM
I agree it was a beautiful trailer. Hopefully it's fun to play. I hope it comes to the 360 eventually and if it does I'll definitely try it out.
Massmass @ Sep 24th 2009 2:13PM
Definitely nice to see a MMO that doesn't blow ass in the graphics department. Now, only if it could be micro-transaction based...
Fusionx @ Sep 24th 2009 3:06AM
While not a lot of information has been released, the largest bit that has been discussed (The Guildleve system) is the "cards" you're talking about. It has nothing to do with a card game.
oG-ShAdY @ Sep 24th 2009 3:08AM
Why don't you enlighten us a little more. What do the "cards" do? Are they skills? Do you buy them?

"Seriously, we're usually not ones to raise a stink, but Wilbur and Orville must be spinning in their graves right now."
That was the first time I laughed since getting out of The Informant just an hour ago. No, this isn't an ad. It's a compliment.
kamishiku @ Sep 24th 2009 3:13AM
the cards are used for your quests.
it would be nice if they did include a card game in 14 but not tetra master the game that never made sense AT ALL but one like 8's card game with numbers that meant numbers
Dracard @ Sep 24th 2009 3:13AM
New rule: Square Enix should no longer be allowed to use those effects they use with the text on what seems like every trailer they ever put out.
Misanthropic Gamer @ Sep 24th 2009 3:24AM
Anyone else gonna skip this one altogether? I'm just not an MMO person. The time and money you have to invest just doesn't seem worth it to me. It's a shame really, because I'd rather SE have spent the dev time on a normal FF game. Oh, and on a side note, you just know the end product won't look even remotely as good as what this trailer has shown.
Nipah @ Sep 24th 2009 3:24AM
I was digging the music until it went into battle mode... too bad.
... oh, and the marlboro sent a chill down my spine... I've always loved / hated fighting those things.
Jak Logan @ Sep 24th 2009 3:55PM
I feel exactly the same. I loved the lead strings carrying the tune. Uematsu is composing XIV, correct?
And that Malboro... damn.
gmoya90 @ Sep 24th 2009 11:41PM
yeah battle music is nice but am gonna miss not having naoshi mizuta compose anymore since most of the FFXI music was great very great!!
D0V3Y @ Sep 24th 2009 3:34AM
is anyone else trying to get onto that beta? i cant get it to work :( and i really really wanna play it... until they start charging me.. then i'm outties.. if no charge then i'm my life will be owned by this game haha
GTMoney519 @ Sep 28th 2009 11:48AM
Man, I love Tetra Master. I nearly had more fun playing that than I did playing the rest of the game it appears in.

Nice, FFXIV will probably be my first venture into the MMO realm. I've avoided them so far, but I love the FF series and this has piqued my interest.
Backslash @ Sep 24th 2009 4:51AM
Triple Triad's where it's at, man.
Oh, and those impossible airships? They fly 'cause they're really FRIENDSHIPS!
Backslash @ Sep 24th 2009 4:51AM
. . . on second glance I really should just not talk anymore
taurus82 (PSN ID: taurus82) @ Sep 24th 2009 4:56AM
I'd loved Triple Triad also.
Blank-Mage @ Sep 24th 2009 5:46AM
Maybe they could have multiple card games? Just saying. But yeah, Triple Triad would make my year.
Taco_Hell @ Sep 24th 2009 10:59AM
So that's what Ringo meant by "I get high with a little help from my friends." He meant that impossible airships can fly with FRIENDSHIP. Here I thought it was something completely different...
taurus82 (PSN ID: taurus82) @ Sep 24th 2009 4:59AM
Will Wedge, Biggs and Cid be in this?
seifer @ Sep 24th 2009 5:34AM
Cid's pretty much a cinch for XIV (there's been an incarnation of him in almost every Final Fantasy), but it's not likely that Wedge and Biggs will be in. I'd rather have Shantotto myself.
Blank-Mage @ Sep 24th 2009 5:47AM
Were Biggs and Wedge in FFXI? I forget whether or not I ever found them.
Blank-Mage @ Sep 24th 2009 5:49AM
The Old Republic.
Star Trek the MMO.
Final Fantasy XIV.
I can only play one MMO at a time.
Why? Why do you make me choose? HOW CAN YOU EXPECT ME TO CHOOSE?!
PedoJokerBear [Planeteer | Power of Gall Bladder] @ Sep 24th 2009 9:17AM
1 gun, 2 bullets. the gun makes the choice.
Me @ Sep 24th 2009 7:59AM
The mmo strategy to make $$$$$
1. Make people pay full price for a game, then charge them monthly to play it.
2. Get the customer hooked.
3. They can now charge outrageous prices for virtual items/services. Like charging $30 to change the faction of one virtual character(a feature wow recently got).
4.???
5. Profit
It's no wonder so many mmos are springing up left and right. MMOs are where the money's at. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. MMOs can be fun, it just can be very pricey fun...
...like hookers and coke
nriveraexpress @ Sep 24th 2009 9:12AM
hookers and coke are fun, and to add your right i just wish that mmos would charge u either or, if theres a mothly fee the game should be free and vice versa
phr3qu3ncy441 @ Sep 24th 2009 9:23AM
i wished i was hooked onto an mmo right now. it'd be a lot cheaper than the 3-4 games i buy per month.
sRc @ Sep 24th 2009 12:50PM
because of course the electrictiy to run the server data centers, the internet service to support the enormous amount of bandwidth thousands of simultaneous connections takes up, and the building and computers to house the dozens of customer service/GM's is all free, right?
Haohmaru (PSN - DimmuBurgerKing XBL - A Real Puppet ) @ Sep 24th 2009 9:13AM
I want oh so badly to play this now. Loved FFXI.
rowd149 @ Sep 24th 2009 9:17AM
So... Are you telling me that FFXIV is FULL ON FRIENDSHIP?
jarhead906 @ Sep 24th 2009 10:53AM
I saw Sin at the end of the trailer.
jhager2010 @ Sep 24th 2009 4:09PM
... Amazing trailer... These games are all time favorites.. Doesn't matter the graphics. It is a priveleage to play these games.
Kazper @ Sep 25th 2009 7:46AM
I'm not too hot on MMOs although I've been lured a bit by the free/micro-transaction MMOs out there. With those I don't feel like I HAVE to play every day or loose money, which really bugs me with subscription based models. So I might skip this game even though I played XI for a while.
But I have to say that Marlboro was awesome! That looked so incredibly cool I have no words for it ^^
Misfit Toy @ Sep 25th 2009 11:47AM
I'm going to hold out for the XBOX 360 version.
