TGS 2009: Joy Ride community can unlock 'Perilous Peaks' stunt track

Microsoft also showcased three new modes for Joy Ride: Delivery Dash pits players against each other, attempting to collect and deliver a pizza at random spots within the world; Coin Frenzy has players (alone or in teams) racing against the clock to collect as many coins within the world; and Trick Showdown requires players work alone or as a team to pull off as many stunts before time expires. As an added bonus, collected coins can be used to customize each player's ride -- a nice alternative to customization options available for purchase with Microsoft Points.
Joy Ride will be available on the Xbox Live Arcade (free to

I remember when Horizons (the MMO) had community unlocked puzzle pieces.. You actually had to craft items, carry them to a specific location, and insert/build them into something meaningful. The two I saw before I left were a bridge to an inaccessible island for player housing and building a mine shaft of sorts to find a new playable race buried in ice (IIRC).
Such a great idea, if only the game were finished before release and the development team didn't implode later on. Ok, sorry for the memories.

Free game for gold members, community unlocks, I'm in.

While conceptually it's an interesting idea to have the community responsible for unlocking stuff, it still feels a bit dirty.
You know, like I'm being blackmailed to keep playing to unlock new stuff so that MS can pad their numbers.
If Joy Ride ends up being a crappy game, I can see this turning into a BAAAD idea.

It's a free game, stop your bitching. If you don't want to play it, don't play it. If you play it, and you think it's a crap game, why'd you want to stick around for the extra maps anyways?

God, has the Internet gotten so bad that the Defense Forces are attacking fellow owners of said console? Let's put it this way.
The game could be a LOT of fun once the additional content starts getting unlocked, but is there enough there at the start to make it worth playing on to unlock it?
It's like if you had a fighting game that unlocked new characters by playing 200 matches....but there's only 4-5 characters to begin with. Would you be able to stomach 200 fights with only 4-5 options to get to another 10 characters?
And in this case, you have to rely on the whole community. So again, while the game may be fun, will it be fun enough so that the amount of people playing raises the community level fast enough?
Or will there be an initial push of people all playing the new game, only for that number to dip when the interest level fades and thus those who end up enjoying it long term have to wait forever to meet the requirements?

You're an idiot, it isnt 10 fighters we're are talking about, its one map.

I can't believe how thick some people are.
I love the idea of the game, I want to enjoy the game. I just hate the concept of having to depend on the rest of the playing community to unlock additional content.
Is it really that hard to grasp?
sleepydumbdude @ Sep 24th 2009 11:44AM
Somebody will play it. I logged on the other name to try Big Bumpin online.. 2 people were actually on. If people still play that crap then they will play anything... yes I play that crap cause I was bored and wanted to see why I thought it sucked again.
T @ Sep 24th 2009 12:14PM
it's a crying shame that you can find even 2 people playing Big Bumpin' and it's near impossible to find anybody to play Crackdown with...
djbuhhda @ Sep 24th 2009 4:04PM
it could be because Big Bumpin' is a good game, and people didn't buy it for a beta.

Sounds like crazy taxi to me.
PeacefulOutrage @ Sep 24th 2009 12:51PM
That's just what I was thinking. Sega has a deep catalog, but continue to put out crap.XBLA Chu-Chu Rocket or Crazy Taxi.
And I was hoping for Hydro Thunder or
Ready2Rumble before Midway went up. I wonder who owns the rights to those games now.
