Those that downloaded Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge may have noticed that the game is huge for an Xbox Live Arcade title, weighing in at 2.1GB. Over the years, XBLA games have gotten bigger and bigger, with Microsoft slowly making exceptions to the size limitation rule so that important releases could ... well, release. Now that size limit is, for all intents and purposes, gone. At the same time, XBLA games can't get any bigger than two gigabytes. Confused?
Scott Austin, Microsoft's director of digital games, told IGN that the XBLA system actually can't accept anything larger than 2GB. Some may be tempted to cry foul, as Microsoft already offers significantly larger downloads with its Games on Demand service. However, according to Austin, Games on Demand uses a different file structure.
We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that Commander's Challenge is slightly above two gigabytes (while it's listed as 2GB on Xbox.com, it shows up as 2.1GB on the 360 HDD). We've sent this little puzzle to Microsoft, in hopes that we might get some more concrete details. We'll update this post when such details arrive.

part of the issue is that xbox arcades don't come with hard drives, and microsoft used to say that all XBLA games would be below a certain size in order to allow arcade owners to fit the game on a memory card (512 mb, i think). as games get bigger, they're shutting out a large part of their market from being able to buy games online. i'd be pretty pissed if i had an arcade (i actually own a pro) and i wasn't able to buy games because they kept upping the size.

Ok, makes sense why this could be an issue then. Thanks for the clarification.

Don't get that.. I pulled the HDD off my 360 & NXE was still there..
I didn't understand why MS discontinued the Pro 360.. why not the Arcade..? the Arcade just seems pointlessthat.. even a 512MB card I would have filled in the first month.. that said.. I've less than half left on my 120GB

Right, file structure....

That's great, but until they drop the 120 GB harddrive like $80, more than 500mbs is a non-starter for me.

First 50MB, then 150MB, then 350MB last I heard. Nice to see there's no size restraints other than the 2GB file structure limitation today, which is pretty generous for an arcade title...
...Betting there'll be a loophole around such a limitation though o.o

2.1GB is the maximum, it simply sounds better to say 2GB. The reason 2.1GB is the maximum is likely because the system stores game sizes as signed integers. For signed integers, the maximum possible value is:
2,147,483,648 (2 ^ 31) where the 32nd bit is reserved as the positive/negative bit.
They probably didn't anticipate the games ever reaching this size. Although, why they wouldn't just change it to an unsigned integer (doubling the maximum size) is beyond me.

Heh. Wikipedia corroborates it if you're interested ;). http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integer_(computer_science)

He didn't say it was an Xbox limitation, it is an XBLA limitation. Considering that HD installs are single image files, there isn't any practical limitation there. It's probably to do with the marketplace software which reports the file size in MB being a 32bit field.

2gb is still a lot when you have a 20gb HDD that only ever has 12gb of free space best case scenario.

probably has more to do with just stating a blanket policy so that developers on their own make titles smaller. obviously if there is an exceptionally good title they will allow for exceptions.

they just don't want to make bigger hard drives that's all....I wish they do

Q12: What size USB storage device does Xbox 360 support?
A12: Xbox 360 will support as big of a storage device as you can format by using FAT32. Unfortunately, when formatting a device in Windows Vista or Windows XP, you are restricted to a maximum FAT32 size of 32 GB. You can work around this limitation by using a third-party utility or using an alternative operating system that does not have this restriction. Please note that the maximum size of any single file on FAT32 is 4 GB.

I'm finally glad to see games expand out in size on XBLA, so much potential is out there for these developers and what use to be a 50MB limit, now its extended all the way to 2 gigs,.... whoohoo is all I can say.
Now MS just needs to stop selling Xbox Arcade Systems what a waste, cause you know what happens, you'll end up needing a HDD after all cause you know you want to play arcade games that are made after the year 2005. Guess how much a 60 gig HDD is going to cost you $100.00 , which is way over price and guess what your not even saving money...stop buying this people for now on just buy, 60 ( until gone), 120 and 250 only.
Who ever hasn't played Shadow Complex, seeing how amazing that game is just at about 800MB is pretty impressive and one of those XBLA I will be playing for a long time, 2gig games I'm a waiting and I'm ready.
