TGS 2009: Hands-on: Final Fantasy XIII

Gallery: Final Fantasy XIII
While the original Final Fantasy XIII demo allowed players to choose from a number of basic attack moves -- thus creating chains depending on the selected sequence -- the Optima system adds a new layer of strategy. At first, we decided to go head-to-head with enemies using the original demo's combat options, and, much like in Final Fantasy titles of the past, the system works fine. Optima, however, allows players to decide how their team will react to the action as it unfolds.
If players want their team to hold back and protect, selecting "Healer" from the Optima menu will execute that strategy. Looking for an all-out attack? That option is available, too, along with a tight balance of the two. When in Optima Mode, players are given the simple option of "Attack," which executes moves based on the strategic options selected. It's a layer that -- when utilized correctly in conjunction with the game's other combat options -- could open the door to some exciting, especially strategic battles.
If Optima is a player's "strategic layer," Driving Mode can best be described as the game's "brute force" mode. When players summon each of the character's Eidolons, the option to "take control" of the mighty beast becomes available with a simple button press. Lightning's summon, Odin, towers over enemy combatants, defending its guardian with awesome power. In Driving Mode, the knight transforms into a mighty steed, affording players the opportunity to issue button combination commands via a timed radial menu.
Of course, if you'd prefer to try for a quick ending to the battle, the simple press of the triangle button will execute a summon's most powerful attack.
The new systems give a good balance of two different styles of gameplay and work quite well. Sadly, we didn't feel like much of a challenge was thrown our way, as the demo's difficulty seemed exceptionally lowered to compensate for a 15-minute gameplay window.
As for the setting, Final Fantasy XIII promises to deliver its usual dose of political intrigue and drama. The Lightning demo began with the vicious Sanctum army -- known as PSICOM -- invading a peaceful land. Lightning, an ex-PSICOM herself, works to infiltrate the Sanctum stronghold alongside a young ally. Leading the invasion is Yaag Rosch -- a PSICOM leuitenant and former mentor to Lightning -- who decided to go classic and brought along every bog standard Final Fantasy enemy unit you could think of. Flying warships, assault bikes, mech suits. Yeah, they're all here. Again.
Yes, Final Fantasy XIII is beautiful ... when you can actually see the action. The game's free-roaming camera was constantly getting in our way. In the demo's first area -- a sea of randomly placed enemy vehicles -- the camera constantly required attention, but became less of an issue in open areas. But less of an issue isn't really a solution.
Final Fantasy XIII is set to hit PlayStation 3 exclusively in Japan this December and the PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America in Spring 2010.

This game needs to be nothing short of the second coming to be worth the wait. Is camera really still an issue after all these years in development?
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Sep 25th 2009 9:10PM
they do make the best CGI cut-scenes in the industry.
so they have a lot to live up to in that respect.
have you seen anything look better on a console thus far ? and thats just the ff13 demo ! i think they want to make sure nobodys gonna get close for some time.
Massmass @ Sep 25th 2009 9:54PM
If I recall correctly, the CG is outsourced. So they don't do it all. I don't know if that is still true, but it certainly was once upon a time.
Besides, two different teams work on a graphics engine and camera engine. There's no excuse for this B.S. So many good games get ruined by crappy cameras and only crappy cameras, and SE should do a better service to the community by not saving money on fixing it.
GameWorks (www.PrizeLive.us) @ Sep 26th 2009 1:45AM
I cannot wait til it arrives on the 360 :)
Avery @ Sep 26th 2009 4:52AM
meh I liked xii and if it is a story on the level of xii with some better graphics and a few new tricks I will be pretty happy. Saying that it had better be anything (especially perfection) implies that we are somehow entitled to a new final fantasy release instead of lucky to get a new one.
[Tre, who is no longer a douche] [blogs at trespeak.tumblr.com] @ Sep 25th 2009 8:20PM
Let's hope they fix the camera soon. I want to see Lightning kick PSICOM butt in the most clear way possible.
Speaking of, now that I think about it, they did name her pretty well, because her traits do seem lightning-ish...

The anticipation towards this game is almost getting to me.
*tries not to jump out a window....again*

Its really sad that I just realized that my reaction when looking at the screenshots from this game have been reduced from "Thats freakin' amazing...." To "meh, those look pretty good." I really think this game should have been released quite a bit earlier if it still wanted to shock and awe its customers with the graphical aspect.
Platy @ Sep 25th 2009 8:54PM
Internet killed the hype =P
It is not a problem of when, it is a problem of how much time you saw the trailer and the images and everything... so it just looks commonplace
BUT ... if you want to feell much better... google some FF7 computer animation ... wich in time i was also "Thats freakin' amazing...." and today i'm like "....wtf ?"
sonicspike41 @ Sep 25th 2009 8:57PM
Well it should hopefully run at a native 720p, and even in "hi-res" the Joystiq screen shots are still only 450 pixels at best, so that's one reason it doesn't wow as much. Not to mention as we've all heard people cry aloud whenever a graphics argument comes up, "you can't go by screen shots, it looks much better in motion."
If anything though, I like the art style they've used for previous games and so I have my hopes up for this. I still remember when I first realized FFX showed which weapon I had equipped during the cutscenes and how beautiful I thought they looked.

Hahahaha....good point. Well graphics aside, I just hope the gameplay is sterling. I really don't think traditional RPG fans have had an A+++ title yet this generation. *crosses fingers*
Zexion_VI @ Sep 25th 2009 8:27PM
I think the camera issue seems to always be a complaint. Hell, I don't think I am even remotely bothered by it in any games where the /previewreview bitches about it.
Platy @ Sep 25th 2009 8:49PM
Besides the ones bitching about the camera not being direct controled, i never saw a review of Mario Galaxy complaining about the camera ... and that's a game where small camera problems could ruin the entire gameplay in some levels
eNrique @ Sep 25th 2009 8:29PM
Kinda off topic, but;
Why do people dislike the physical appearance of lightning?
I think she is very feminine

Because in not one of those screenshots is the background behind her a kitchen.

Wardo @ Sep 25th 2009 8:44PM
I personally like her character design.
sonicspike41 @ Sep 25th 2009 8:52PM
Well she was supposed to be the female version of Cloud.
From what I gathered from some of the interviews is that since FF VII and Cloud were so amazingly popular, they wanted a character that could capture that popularity for modern consoles. To do this they created the female version of Cloud and gave her a name related to the sky.
It's quite symbolic too if you think about it. First came the cloud, then in a storm development came the lightning.
Anemos @ Sep 25th 2009 10:11PM
^ So when does Earth, Wind, and Fire come in?
sonicspike41 @ Sep 25th 2009 10:25PM
As soon as Captain Planet returns back to their rings so they can use their powers again.
Monkeydog @ Sep 25th 2009 11:13PM
@Anemos I believe they'll appear in a DLC pack sometime in September.
Wardo @ Sep 25th 2009 8:45PM
Despite the camera complaint I am still very excited for this.
gmoya90 @ Sep 25th 2009 9:04PM
actually she supose to be like squall female version from what the playstation magazine said. she cold and distance.
Uncontrol @ Sep 25th 2009 8:53PM
isn't that the plot to ff7
libregkd @ Sep 25th 2009 10:05PM
If you want to say that, then FFVII's plot is just a rip off of FFVI's anyway

It's possible that the US will get a demo, and if it does, it will be a new one based on more recent builds.
Tofupancho @ Sep 25th 2009 9:58PM
Hey.
Why is Bernie Mac in this game?
WREturns (Looking for a graphic designer) @ Sep 25th 2009 10:10PM
I played the rather mediocre Final Fantasy X about 5 years ago and I haven't really had a craving to get into some Final Fantasy since (barring the exceptional remakes). I hope this restores the tradition of excellence to the series.
m0m0 @ Sep 25th 2009 11:01PM
FFX mediocre? by what standard?
Reuben @ Sep 25th 2009 11:15PM
I thought that FFX was one of the greatest PS2 games to ever be released.
Maybe baring Tidus. He kind of grates on me.
SpaceFox @ Sep 25th 2009 11:45PM
Mediocre? It's the first FF game I ever played, and it's my favorite game of all time.... D:
How's it mediocre?
WREturns (Looking for a graphic designer) @ Sep 26th 2009 12:38AM
I didn't know there were so many FFX fans. Well, it's just a matter of personal preference but I thought that most of the characters were annoying (especially Tidus who seemed to lack any kind of personality whatsoever), I only enjoyed the magic system slightly, the lack of a real world map bothered me and the story just didn't jive with me. On the other hand, FFVIII is one of my top three and I know how much people hate that one. I don't know, I guess I don't feel like any FInal Fantasy has been able to match the epic scope in storytelling of FFVI.
U U D D L R L R B A SELECT START @ Sep 26th 2009 2:30AM
I have to cast my vote with WREturns here. FFVI has been my favorite FF by far, followed by VII and then VIII. I've had a hard time getting into the storylines of each progressive Final Fantasy since.
And in my opinion the annoyance of what was Tidus was only topped by Wakka. Oy vey.
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 26th 2009 2:56AM
FF IX is my favorite with X following closely behind. I loved just about everything about... with the exception of some of the voice work. But I did love the narrative tone throughout. Though IX did bring more personality for the most part.
(BTW, Wakka's voice actor was terrific)
OptimumEDGE @ Sep 26th 2009 11:16AM
FFX was the first FF game I've played, and I absolutely loved it. I don't see why many people seem to be dissatisfied with it, I thought it was amazing, especially back when it first released.
Guinea Rabbit @ Sep 26th 2009 5:24PM
Squeenix needs to make current-generation hi-def remakes of Final Fantasy VI and VII, especially VI, which had the best story and characters of all the games. Also, it would be great if they added more content to both games. I'd love to have more side quests in the latter halfs of both games.
MRLN the Amazing @ Sep 25th 2009 10:18PM
What I can't understand is how an RPG with separate battle screens can have a bad camera.
It still looks pretty and sounds like the deepest battle system yet.
m0m0 @ Sep 25th 2009 11:03PM
just be thankful that you still have FFXIII on a proper console to play. these days proper RPGs tend to end up on DS.
Nate @ Sep 25th 2009 11:38PM
I thought the ps3 still had a time exclusivity in North america, that they aren't even developing the 360 version yet?
Xav de Matos @ Sep 26th 2009 2:58AM
No. It's day and date on both platforms in North America.
Rugged Savior @ Sep 25th 2009 11:55PM
The combat system for each release of final fantasy seems to be getting more complex. I'm sure it won't take much time to fully understand it. Nevertheless, the game looks very awesome. I just hope the story is easier to understand than FFXII (but XII was still very awesome, I cannot doubt that). Also.....a baby chocobo--in someone's AFRO!?
U U D D L R L R B A SELECT START @ Sep 26th 2009 2:32AM
Pleh, complex combat system you say? Try some of the RPGs by Atlus or Nippon Ichi for size. ;D
Guinea Rabbit @ Sep 26th 2009 5:27PM
@Rugged Savior: Maybe they can call it an Afrocobo!
I wonder if that dude's battle style will be similar to that of a trainer from other FF games (only with guns instead of a whip).
EcnobA @ Sep 26th 2009 1:05AM
as one of those ppl who have the demo. i have to say that the CGI is top notch.
Gameplay will be the best stragy/acction for those who like this type of games even if they are not fan of the serie.
as for the camera...yes it gets somewhat cluncky at times.
taurus82 (HD ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, Please) @ Sep 26th 2009 3:18AM
I like the 'semi-automatic' summons and gambit-esque Optima system.

We need an EDIT button!
Done anyone know who or what the Earth Eidolon is going to be (if it exists in the game at all)?
andrewpoe @ Sep 26th 2009 10:08AM
Final Fantasy XIII to me sounds like Final Fantasy VII Again.
Not that's bad.....hopefully by then I'll be caught up with my backlog and have played XII! (doubt it)

Hey Joystiq. Why are you running political ads for Michael Bloomberg? Please don't put partisan politics on this gaming blog. Thanks!
vegetafr20 @ Sep 26th 2009 12:13PM
I thought X was awesome, it was my last FF game on a console (play VII Crisis Core on PSP) and I skipped XI because it was an MMO, and for some reason was not drawn to XII. I'm looking forward to getting into XIII though. For the record IX was my favorite FF, but Chrono Trigger is still my favorite game of all time.
