TGS 2009: Koei announces Dynasty Warriors Online for PS3
Even from our poorly lit offices, some 6,500 miles away from the Tokyo Game Show floor, we heard shouts of jubilation coming from the Koei stage. The reason for the uproar was due to the announcement made just moments before: Dynasty Warriors Online, an MMO-Samurai-Warfare-Sim for PC, will be making its way to PS3 next year in Japan. Wait. We hear those cheers again! Man, our windows are closed! What's going on?
Details about the title are few, though the official DWO teaser site confirms that while the title will get a retail release, players won't have to shell out for any irksome subscription fees. Instead, Koei will be supported by the community's purchase of Musou Coins, which can be spent on special items and furniture. Furniture? Does this mean we'll finally be able to play as ... the Ottoman Empire?

What you have something against Dynasty Warriors or something?
Erluti @ Sep 25th 2009 11:24AM
Michael, don't you know that hating Dynasty Warriors is proof that you are a sophisticated gamer with classy tastes?

All I'm saying is, I though with Tecmo getting in on things, we'd finally see the end of the "Warriors" franchise. There's like 9000 of them.
With all the complaints you hear on here everytime Activision releases another GH or TH, you'd think someone would agree.
alamos @ Sep 25th 2009 11:57AM
Considering how old the franchise is, with the first Sangoku Musou in 1997, it's only natural of a successful franchise to have sequels. You must be confusing expansions for full games. You also act like the games are dreadful. There's a reason they make so many, it's really great fun. Which why I own most of them...

"we'd finally see the end of the "Warriors" franchise. There's like 9000 of them"
Yeah... That'll happen when Nintendo stops using Mario, or Namco stops using Pac-Man. Why would you get rid of your strongest franchise? I mean, what is Koei aside from Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms?
Let's look at the numbers here to see why this is so nothing like Guitar Hero.
DW 1-6 on Console, 5 iterations on Handheld (with much different gameplay)
GH 1-5 on Console, 80s, Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, 80's, Smash Hits, 3 on DS, and 4 on Mobile. So that's 11 DW vs 17 GH... Guitar Hero's inception was 2005, and Dynasty Warriors was in 1997. So 12 years for Dynasty Warriors, 4 years on Guitar Hero (in November).
So 0.95 DW games per year on average, or 4.25 games per year of Guitar Hero.
BIG DIFFERENCE. Bring on more Dynasty Warriors!

Sure Dynasty Warriors might be a "little" played out.
But this sounds like a hell of a lot of fun! I'm interested :)

ITS NOT FUCKING JAPAN. ITS CHINA.
Geist @ Sep 25th 2009 11:46AM
Indeed. If you want Samurai, Samurai Warriors is over that-a-way.
sonofman @ Sep 25th 2009 11:59AM
So, the company that creates a redundant series of games based around mindlessly grinding thousands of enemies had the bright idea to make a MMO, a genre of game often criticized for its reliance on mindless grinding to add reply value. WHAT A CONCEPT!!! SIGN ME UP!!!
While I have been wanting a good oriental inspired game for sometime, and a samurai mmo would be very awesome in concept if handled correctly, I do not feel the dynasty warrior people are the ones to do it...
Punkrawk Bbob @ Sep 25th 2009 12:33PM
"I do not feel the dynasty warrior people are the ones to do it..."
Well then make your perfect game or quit bitching. There are tons that would love to play their MMO.
And btw - Dynasty Warriors is not a "samurai" game. It would not be a samurai MMO. Samurai = Japan, DW = China. I'm sure we can be racist though if you want and say "it's all the same thing, they all look the same", ignoring thousands of years of cultural conflict between the two. Hell, if we're merging cultures why not mix USA and Brazil. I mean, they're both in the Americas, right?
===================
MMO's are about grinding. If you don't want to grind, MMO's aren't for you. Not every medium out there has to cater to you. It is what it is, take or it leave it based off of that. Don't break my genre because you aren't into it.

I used the word Samurai and bounced ideas off of that because thats what it says in the original post... I wasn't saying Dynasty warriors was a samurai game. I said nothing racist in my statement, nor was I bitching. I cannot stand how people pick apart words and are offended by everything... Grow up.
I guess now that I am apparently both racist and a game developer...I better get to work on my superior racist game...
Punkrawk Bbob @ Sep 25th 2009 1:20PM
So what you're saying is... Because the article's author posts something, you take it at base value and do zero thinking or rationalizing on your own?
I read that he said samurai as well. Doesn't mean I back him up and support it by repeating the poorly used term.
Why are you allowed to bitch about the game, but I'm not allowed to bitch about your ignorance of the game and subject matter? I'm sorry, I forgot your opinions and thoughts on an internet blog's comment system were sacred and hallowed text. Hopefully my heathenish atrocities will be forgiven by whichever god empowers the beliefs you follow.
boot2skull @ Sep 25th 2009 2:47PM
@punk
Well the Joystiq author did say 'samurai'. You're assuming that A: People care enough about DW to have previous knowledge of the series, or that they'll do research before a post, and B: that the DW developers didn't decide to change it up and do samurai this time. If the author mistakenly associated Chinese swordplay with Samurai, that's not really sonofman's fault is it? Is it a mistake to make a post based on the inaccurate reporting of a Joystiq writer? We rely on Joystiq as a source of accurate gaming information. I assume Joystiq writers are held somewhat accountable much like any news industry, but everyone makes mistakes or inaccurate associations.
It seems your true issue with sonofman is that he maligned your beloved DW series.
s_m_o_o_v @ Sep 25th 2009 8:44PM
@ boot2skull
It's bleedingly obvious from sonofman's first post that he is, in fact, QUITE familiar with the Dynasty Warriors franchise...
If you're gonna play the Captain Save-A-Net-Stranger role, you should at least do it right....I mean, that was just LAZY...
alamos @ Sep 25th 2009 11:59AM
Hopefully we'll finally see a Western release... I've been wanting to play this for ages!
Punkrawk Bbob @ Sep 25th 2009 12:34PM
Couldn't agree with you more. We could do more with an action based MMO in the west. Only two I ever remember were Planetside and Auto Assault... both uh. Sucked bad.
Avery @ Sep 25th 2009 3:57PM
well everyones favorite accusation these days is racist. If someone knows very little about dw or sw why would they really know the difference. I don't play sports games and I guess this would be like me saying that micheal jordan played for the celtics. I didn't make that comment because he's black but because I didn't know he played for the bulls, as an example. People should really think twice before they call someone a racist usually they have no idea what they are talking about and look like a fool for saying it.
Punkrawk Bbob @ Sep 25th 2009 11:20PM
Racism is prejudicing someone or a culture based off of pre-existing stereotypes.
IE - All of Asian descent with a sword must be samurai. All Chinese know Kung-Fu. All Americans are cowboys. All Africans run fast.
Racism is usually spawned from ignorance. Not knowing the subject at hand.
So it's not that far of a stretch to see the racism in assuming an Asian themed game with swords must be a samurai game because you ignored any and all information regarding the game. Any game with Italians in it must be a mafia game too. It's subtle, but there is racism to it. It doesn't hurt to be aware of these things, ya know.
emperorzeroxx @ Sep 25th 2009 10:04PM
Dynasty warriors should have always been an mmo, the shallow and repetitive game play is expected in mmo games. I must indeed beta this.
