TGS 2009: Motion-controlled Resident Evil 5 caught on video
Remember when it was first announced that Resident Evil 5 wasn't coming to the Wii, and fans got really upset, because Resident Evil 4 on the Wii was totally awesome? It seems that decision wasn't made due to Capcom's oversight of said awesomeness -- rather, it looks like they chose to bring that experience to the PS3 with the ball-pointed PlayStation Motion Controller.
Seriously, check out this gameplay sample (video posted after the break) from Sony's TGS keynote and tell us that doesn't look exactly like RE4 on the Wii. Okay, the PS3 version is significantly prettier -- and due to the fact that Sony's controller has no nunchuck (which forces the player to hold a SIXAXIS in one hand and the wand in another) the controls look a bit more awkward this time around.

Are you kidding me? Did you ever try to play RE4 on a 16:9 television? The game was not optimized correctly for 16:9. When I noticed that the HUD in the corners were cut off the screen i ejected the disc and never played again.
The controls were no better than the gamecube version either.

RE4 for Wii was truly one of the best games I've ever played. Controls were great and the gameplay itself was extremely enjoyable. Hell, even my dad(huge RE fan) loved the game, beat it 3 times and even unlocked the Chicago Typewriter. I havent picked up RE5 yet, so when/if I get a PS Motion Controller, this is a must-buy for me.
The Co-op should be awesome too, but damn...that means I might need 2 PS Motion Controllers.... D:

This is decidedly bad for lefties. I can get used to a sixaxis controller, and I can use the wii as it's ambidextrous, but this is not good. There's no way I'll be able to aim with my right hand, it just doesn't work like that.

i know you had something setup wrong. I played RE4:Wii Edition on a 16:9 setup and had no problems.

This is only bad for lefties if they don't let you configure the controls. If they do, you can just hold the Dualshock in your right hand.

Ghen: I'm sure there will be a lefty control setup, it'll just use the 4 buttons on the right as the dpad. Not quite as good, but certainly good enough for something like this.

the other problem is that left handers will be kinda screwed. at least the sticks are in the same place on both sides of the controller but the X,O,square,triangle,R1,R2 buttons will have to be remapped and then on top of that if you wanted to switch back to normal controls, you would have to manually change it.
Easy solution, make left handers shoot right handed

I remember seeing a close up shot of the Motion Controller showing a tiny analog stick.
But let's stop complaining about holding a DS3 in one hand. This is actually great. It is showing that developers are embracing Sony's tech and attempting different things. Not every game will require you to hold a DS3. This is Capcom trying to apply the technology to an existing game to, quite honestly, re- sell you the same game you already have once again. I have no problem with that but let's be happy that the technology is not going on the wayside but apparently widely approved of.
If more developers keep trying different game applications for the motion controller like Capcom is doing who knows what they come up with. Maybe some other game will make use of a second motion controller to replace the analog stick altogether.

Yeah this is utterly flawed until they come up with a better solution. I was under the impression they were going to have something similar to a nunchuck. Which sucks because if it weren't for the current setup, I would buy this game again, but this time for PS3 because playing RE4 on the Wii was awesome.

Two things you gotta keep in mind, Alex.
1. Patches where you don't have to re-buy games are being discussed for the PS3
2. Do you think any company would hesitate in selling additional peripherals with this kind of technology? My guess is Sony or some third party is already hard at work thinking of a nunchuk-like product to take your money away, already.

I guess when the game is released SONY/CAPCOM (or Mad Catz?) will have a proper DS3/Motion Controller attachment (similar to the Wii Zapper).
Better still, make a new wireless version of the GunCon 3 from PS3 Time Crisis 4.
Sure beats holding the 360 controller in one hand and pointing your other hand's finger making "Bang Bang" noises...

He's saying that Microsoft has stated that the expected use model for Project Natal is similar to the PS3 motion controller. You'll have these motion capture gestures with the camera, but the user will be expected to hold the xbox controller for a lot of game functions outside of the motion ones with Natal.

no, as a joke that last line was funny... but I was just pointing out that it probably wouldn't be a correct "comparison" since in the examples given so far by MS and media is either/or ... if you're using the controller with Natal, you'd use the triggers to shoot and hand gestures for secondary stuff like squad controls... or in the case of space invaders, everything was done without the controller... that's all.

I'm with you Shag. If this wasn't the case, Shadowrun for the PC wouldn't have had to gimp PC users just to give the console players a fighting chance. Keyboard + Mouse is objectively the better control scheme. Whether or not someone is comfortable with it is another issue.

I'll tell you why I don't like mouse and keyboard....it's too easy for shooting games.
hear me out.
in real life if you are holding a gun you, have to readjust your body, shoulders and your arms to get behind the shot. you can't just stand in one position focusing on one location and expect to start shooting at things at other locations accurately. you just can't
that being said, with a mouse and kb you can just click around and shoot anywhere on the screen...too easy. not fun. Imagine that in real life. stand in one place with out moving your head or body and now try shooting all over the place like with a mouse.
with a controller you have to essentially move the screen which is closer to moving your body and getting behind the shot. It's definitely slower and harder but it's a little more realistic. I'm not saying more realistic is always better but It helps immerse me in the game more than a kb/m

My favorite way to play PC games is with a controller in my left hand and mouse in the right. Works great. It's absolutely no different than a Wii Remote nunchuk, except it has more buttons. (L2, L3 and the D-Pad)
