One of the biggest surprises to come out of TGS 2009 is the presence of Crackdown 2 -- and it's playable! While the Ruffian Games developed sequel was only just announced at E3, Microsoft decided to let press in Tokyo step into an early build of the new Pacific City. Some textures were missing, and a few glitches popped up, but it was to be expected in what we were told was a game "roughly at 60 percent" complete.
Stay tuned, we'll post our impressions soon, along with an interview with Ruffian lead designer Steve Iannetta. (Oh, and just in case you were wondering: we mopped the floor with the competition.)

I cannot wait for this game. Crackdown is one of my top ten favorite games of all time.

I hope they have real co-op. That's where you have one copy of a game, one tv, and two people ready to have fun.
Last night I had to setup the craziest setup to do 4-player campaign on odst, but I'm fine with 4 players unable to be on a screen.
Oh and the crazy setup was this, I had to move an amp, move an entire shelf over to beside my tv setup, move my computer monitor on to that. Hook up the HDMI port of a friends 360 to the monitor. Have the audio cables on the 360 go through an amp to another amp, then out to my computer speakers, which wasn't really working well. So eventually we had to move the monitor. Move a crappy crt over onto the shelf. hook up the audio to it. Then hook up my ps3's video feed to it. Then cover the screen and move the monitor back right in front of the tv.
This is why I like having splitscreen for 2 player games.

Looks like more of the same. Though those launchers look like a lot of fun. They should incorporate something to give you control of your character while you're in the air. At least in the Deathmatch modes. It seems that you're constantly an easy target while flying through the air and there's nothing you can do about it except stay on the ground -- and who wants to do that?

Thank god. If there's one thing I hate it's when sequels try and re-invent a game. It's like, if I wanted a totally different game, I wouldn't be buying a sequel to this one.
Save the complete re-designs for new or stale franchises, not a first sequel to a fresh IP.

You sound like the kind of guy who would turn down sex with a supermodel because you already banged a girl back in highschool and didn't think much of the experience.
More of the same, indeed.

Actually that was a shit metaphor. It's more like turning down a supermodel with bigger tits cause you already banged a supermodel.

Azerael : Isn't it the idea? You banged a super model, and you go on to bang a super model with big tits, that's "more of the same", only better. If you want a change, say, hookers, you won't exactly look for them in fashion stage, right? That's called....er, I don't know...

What's the point in buying a sequel if it's the same shit you've already got sitting on your shelf with nothing new what-so-ever? As Prof mentioned, it's exactly why I didn't buy RE5. It was the same game as RE4.
Companies think "Oh we'll just add multiplayer and zombies" now-a-day's and they'll have a million seller on their hands.
I'm not expecting Crackdown to re-revolutionize open world gaming, but when I see footage of a game that's 60% finished and it looks exactly like it's predecessor, don't expect me to be impressed.

Storm Eagle, because it's not, as you put it, exactly the same.
Since no game is perfect, typically the idea is to take the stuff that wasn't done well in the first game and fix that part, and leave the core that fans of the game loved alone. Then there are new game modes, new weapons, etc.
I would love to play Crackdown 1 with 4 player co-op, but I can't. I would love to play it with 16 player versus, but I can't. And from the sounds of it, there's almost 10 more MP and co-op modes not even announced yet, all of which I can't play in Crackdown 1. There will be weapons I couldn't use, supervillains I couldn't fight (which everyone really wished was in Crackdown 1), etc etc etc.
That's not even touching on all the balancing, new moves, etc that I'm sure will be in there, as they always are with sequels.

Can't wait for Crackdown 2 but I'm not quite sure about a deathmatch mode. Gone off versus multiplayer lately.
Until November, obviously.

It's an early version of the game, they said the graphics are only around 60% complete, hence it looking identical to the original game, and there's clearly problems with the animations. I'm sure that stuff will be fixed up.
Not sure why they chose to show it in this state though, as much as I loved the first one, a lot of these gameplay videos have made it look bad.
It just needs to be a bigger and better version of the first game, and I'm sold.

Other than the music, this video has me wanting CRACKDOWN 2!
The original Crackdown was a fantastic game but it seemed I reached level 4 in everything way too fast. I LOVED how driving skill changed the speed, handling, firepower and shapes of the vehicles.

Well that's just marvelous. The first one is an amazing classic, and I still play it all of the time because of how fun and spectacular it is. The sequel looks like it will SURELY live up to it's predecessor. Easily one of my most anticipated games of next year.

As long as there is an actual story and more missions this time they can keep everything else the same as far as I'm concerned.

I never played the first Crackdown...but this reminds me a lot of Quake 3 with the jumping pads and power-ups only cel-shaded and in third-person. Though I guess one could draw that similarity between just about every shooting game. Anyways...the game looks very frantic and melee attacks seem pretty ridiculously overpowered considering how hard it appears for people to shoot a moving target.

I loved the original and this looks awesome... shame it's a while off yet though. Multiplayer was great in the first game but being able to face off against loads of people in the sequel will be fantastic! Also nice to see that graphics-wise it seems to be staying pretty faithful to the first game... can't wait. http://megabits-of-gaming.blogspot.com/

I was one of the 5 people who bought the game for the game and not the Halo 3 Beta voucher. The first game was amazing even though it was simplistic. Loved climbing and jumping off buildings. I never got the last few jumping orbs though. :(
If I still had a 360 I'd pick this game up in a heartbeat.
