Battlefield Heroes enlists two million recruits
DICE's free-to-play FPS, Battlefield Heroes, just had its two millionth soldier signed up for duty, EA announced. It's an impressive accomplishment considering the game only opened its doors in June and netted its first million users back in July. And as a reward for all of the players' hard work gaming, EA has dated the title's Heroes of the Fall update for September 30.
We already knew about the proposed changes to the game's social networking functions and the class updates, but there's also the prospect of a new map to be excited about. EA is taking name ideas for the new locale right now at the game's official site, so head on over and suggest one. If you're looking for a bit of inspiration, may we suggest The Joystiq Map of Joystiqing Joystiq: Joystiq?

Prof that if you build it, they will come.
I wonder if EA and DICE are making more $ of this than previous retail titles?
ShadowXOR @ Sep 26th 2009 8:44AM
It's not a FPS...
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Sep 26th 2009 9:20AM
Really? Because I thought a game in which you shoot people in first person was an FPS.
ShadowXOR @ Sep 26th 2009 9:36AM
Really? Because the game plays from a third-person perspective moron, have you actually played it? Look at screenshots and stop talking out of your ass.

I'd argue that at this point FPS is more about a certain game style than about perspective. True, this is actually in the third person perspective, but I'd argue that it's more of an FPS than Fallout 3, which played in the first person.
ShadowXOR @ Sep 26th 2009 10:02AM
It plays like a third-person shooter, because it is.
Fallout is an FPS RPG.
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 26th 2009 10:12AM
Nevertheless, if you can see your character, it's a TPS.
Nap @ Sep 26th 2009 12:01PM
You could play Fallout 3rd person AND first person...

eddienoteddy @ Sep 26th 2009 8:45AM
Enlist...Recruits...? Kind of redundant right?
ripslymemc @ Sep 26th 2009 11:42AM
shhh.....Joystiq is trying to sound all military!
Poisoned Al @ Sep 26th 2009 9:43AM
For a "casual" game, BFH is not a very newbie friendly. I wonder how many of those two million signed up, got turned into paste and quit after a few games. Still, quite impressive. Maybe we'll get another freebie code in the mail for something.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 10:47AM
i played for the first few days when it came out, and while the competition wasn't particularly tough, i found the balancing to be atrocious. The splash damage and tanks were even worse than Bad Company, it literally took me 6 direct hits from a tank to kill a gunner once, i couldnt stand that shit
Avatar @ Sep 26th 2009 1:30PM
@Poisoned
You're exactly right. Almost everyone who's unfamiliar with Battlefield games doesn't last very long. Half the people that joined the beta with had never played before (myself included) and needless to say we're not playing now either.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 26th 2009 2:28PM
@Dark: And there are still loads of people that call tanks over powered. Even tho it's cartoony, people are STILL pissed they can't fight a tank on foot. IT'S A FUCKING TANK! IT'S MEANT TO BE TOUGH!
In the end, it's still a Battlefield game. A Battlefield with super powers, but a Battlefield game none the less. All these people come in expecting something like TF2, and get disappointed. That and the levels system means you're nothing but sniper fodder for the first few hours.
Mike Santos @ Sep 26th 2009 9:49AM
I played this game a bit and It seems Battlefield Heroes was made for people who don't want to buy an online shooter. It's competent, but that's about it.
Kogen @ Sep 26th 2009 9:49AM
I would not sign up just for the fact that this is absoutely a ripoff of another FPS...
EA can go choke on phallus.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 26th 2009 10:00AM
Wow, every single word in your post made you look like a retard! Really impressive in a fucking stupid way. It's free to play and 3rd person. You couldn't put more fail in your post even if you smashed your greasy face into your Cheeto stained keyboard.
ShadowXOR @ Sep 26th 2009 10:02AM
Poisoned Al hit the nail on the head.
And what exactly are they ripping off Kogen?
MystileArmor @ Sep 26th 2009 10:27AM
I bet he's going to tell is they are ripping off Battlefield 1942....
Kogen @ Sep 26th 2009 10:47AM
Team Fortress 2, maybe?
And calm down...
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 10:49AM
the guy saying "EA can go choke on a phallus" is telling people to calm down. riiiight
Kogen @ Sep 26th 2009 10:56AM
I thought people would realise that is just a joke; to me, it is different than freaking out with swears.
But oh well, be weird fanboys if you want. Enjoy your sub-par version of another game!
ShadowXOR @ Sep 26th 2009 11:20AM
It's nothing like Team Fortress 2 and you obviously haven't played it so you wouldn't know whether it was sub-par or not. I never said if it was a good game or not. I played the beta a bit and it wasn't for me.
I was just correcting your BS comments not because I like the game, but because idiots like your a blight on humanity.
ripslymemc @ Sep 26th 2009 11:43AM
If we are thinking about the same game, then you are very wrong. Play this game and you'll see why.
djphatjive @ Sep 26th 2009 10:35AM
Yea I signed up, played 2 times. I mean how many are actively playing the game. Who cares how many sign up!
Bowser Rogozhin: England is finished @ Sep 26th 2009 10:35AM
So this is the future, heh? Multiplayer browser gaming and micro transactions? It's like we've gone full circle, somewhat; hardware manufacturers absolutely adored the coin-op era of the 70s-80s-early 90s as people were constantly enticed to have one more go. Just one more go to try for the high score, just one more go to beat that mute badass at Street Fighter. If all it costs is 20p/50p/a quarter, as you Americans would say, then what's the harm?
And now we're here again. Much has changed, such as input devices, and a bunch of other stuff I can't go into as I'm currently multi-tasking, but the philosophy remains the same. Guide the player into parting of his cash via many mini increments: micro transactions. Never will you physically own the game, but you can partake in a moments playtime for a period determined by the publisher. This goes against teh fundamental pillars of console gaming.
With this, the falling stock of traditional consoles in Japan, slumping sales worldwide, amongst a whole bunch of other things, it feels like console gaming is under siege. So I'm not too sure whether Joystiq, a site devoted primarily to console gaming, should be celebrating developments such as these.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 10:50AM
Why is saying "what's the harm" specific to America? Seriously wtf
Bowser Rogozhin: England is finished @ Sep 26th 2009 10:54AM
I don't understand what Batty's problem is. Or am I being trolled? I think I'll bite my tongue as I think I'm being trolled.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Sep 26th 2009 11:13AM
no i just dont get it, do people in England not say that ever?
Bowser Rogozhin: England is finished @ Sep 26th 2009 11:37AM
Batty is still hungover from yesterdays debauchery, I think. Or maybe I am. Clearly my phrasing was worded poorly. Revised sentence reads:
"If all it costs is 20p/50p, or, as you Americans would say, a quarter, then what's the harm?"
I need a copy editor, preferably one that hasn't been tainted by The Grauniad.
Triscuit @ Sep 26th 2009 11:41AM
I think he was referring to the quarter, not "what's the harm". At least that's how I read it.
Triscuit @ Sep 26th 2009 11:43AM
Note: My comment was submitted before Bowser's was visible.
Shimrra @ Sep 26th 2009 10:49AM
This game would be so much better if there were more maps to play on.
Jerkamie @ Sep 26th 2009 11:12AM
Did they fix the bug where your whole system would slow down to 5 fps to let punkbuster check for hacks every 5 minutes or so?
Kogen @ Sep 26th 2009 11:22AM
Blight on humanity because I do not like how they used the artstyle for this game, as another developer used it prior.
Truly fanboys!
Triscuit @ Sep 26th 2009 11:52AM
I'm no fanboy, hell I can't even play the game as I'm a mac user, but I'd like to say something. I'm an art/design student, so I take this kind of topic seriously. Using similar art styles/direction does not make the game a copy or a ripoff. If they had used direct concepts from TF2, such as the doctor and his abilities, the spy and his abilities, or the objective being to nab a briefcase, then it would be a ripoff. But this only has a similar art direction. Numerous games use cel shading, but they are by no means knock offs of each other. Just my two cents.
Triscuit @ Sep 26th 2009 11:45AM
Really? Really? Can you please take your links to irrelevant content somewhere else? Also, why "must" I see that video? It has no bearing on my life.
Hyamzy @ Sep 26th 2009 11:45AM
Go AWAY!
Triscuit @ Sep 26th 2009 11:54AM
Maybe they should finally get working on that Mac support they talked about when they announced the game. I know they never blatantly said "Mac support later", but they did say that if the game was successful/well received they would put it in. I think this counts as well received.
ZaxCG2 @ Sep 26th 2009 12:17PM
Yeah... I'm sure 70% of the 2 million are people who sign up, download it, play it for a day, and leave.
I'm sorry, I HATE that game. And you can't jump on me for not playing. I HAVE. SERVERAL TIMES. Half the time I'm playing, my team is a bunch of five year olds slamming their faces across the keyboard. Plus the whole upgrade system is way too annoying for me.
I'll be in TF2 if you need me.
maspiderface @ Sep 26th 2009 6:25PM
This.
ZaxCG2 @ Sep 26th 2009 9:43PM
My Steam ID is ZaxCG2. ;)
Zanduar @ Sep 26th 2009 1:18PM
I played the game through beta and release. It was buggy and unbalanced. The micro-transaction scheme was despicable thanks to how quickly the items would disappear (and the price). Instead of blowing twenty dollars on micro-transactions it would be smarter to buy a well balanced game like TF2.
R0N @ Sep 27th 2009 3:41AM
I had been playing in the beta, and I did have my fun with the game. Especially when the beta players got free stuff at points. I ended up leaving it when the game went to final release because it was sooo buggy. I kept getting lag and punkbuster issues.
Its fun, but I guarantee most of those 2 million just tried it out.
